Horizon Zero Dawn PC Screen-space reflections are bugged in 4K resolutions

One of our readers informed us about a possible rendering issue in the PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn. According to the report, the screen-space reflections are not being rendered correctly in 4K. And, after testing various areas, we can confirm that the screen-space reflections are bugged when using 4K resolutions.

Below you can find some comparison screenshots on Ultimate settings. On the left we have the 1080p and 1440p screenshots. On the right we have the 4K screenshots. Now as you can see, the screen-space reflections are “reduced” in the 4K screenshots. They are still there, however, they are not as profound as in 1080p or 1440p. We don’t know why this is happening, however, there is no visual difference between 1440p and 1080p.

In order to make it easier to spot the bugged reflections, I’ve decided to circle specific areas. I don’t know why this is happening, however, I’ve never noticed such a thing in other games. For instance, Death Stranding, a game that’s using the same engine, did not have this issue.

Resetera’s member BoredLemon offered a possible explanation.

“They’re probably doing SSR with simple ray-marching. And it looks like someone just hardcoded maximum steps along the ray *in pixels*, so with higher resolution, you’re getting shorter rays, which is leading to worse SSR coverage.”

This is another bug we can add in the list of Horizon Zero Dawn’s PC issues. A few days ago, we informed you about the lack of the snow deformation effects and Aloy’s hair bug at high framerates. Not only that, but as we’ve already reported, some animations are locked at 30fps.

Guerrilla Games has stated that it’s currently looking into fixing some of these issues. Unfortunately, though, there is no ETA on when the first PC patch will come out.

  1. Playstation ports to pc to do translate well…Devil May cry trilogy is a good example, it has so many effects and textures missing and bugged out at frames higher than 60 or something.

  2. Wow this goes to show that it not a matter of engine but the developer themselves. Funny how the studio that create the Decima Engine can’t even port their game properly but Hideo himself able to do it properly with Death Stranding.

    1. I doubt Guerilla made the port themselves. It was probably a 3rd party studio contracted to do it. It’s usually how it goes. They are currently working on the next Horizon game so I don’t think they had time to work on a PC port.

        1. No, I did some googling and it’s pretty much confirmed. VIRTUOUS is the name of the studio that ported the game to PC on behalf of Guerilla.

    2. This is basically proof that most developers got not enough knowledge to translate proprietary conslow APIs to proper DX/Vulkan/OpenGL. Proprietary crap can just rot in the hell

  3. One bug that I’ve found and haven’t seen anyone else talk about is cloud rendering when using custom resolutions. Clouds look very pixelated whenever you use any resolution that’s not your standard 1080/1440/2160p. I was using 3620 x 2036. However, if I switch to 2160p (standard 4K) and turn down render scaling in the graphics options to 90%, the clouds look fine.

  4. I was surprise so many copies sold via steam, yet the port is garbage at the moment, why they didnt refund this game?,

guess pc beggars is so desperate to play ps exclusive

    1. This is what happened to me I asked valve/steam for a refund and got refused not because I played for more then 2h (didn’t play even 1h when I noticed how bad it was) but because I bought it during summer sale. They refuse refunds for games bought over 2 weeks or over 2h played. So there you have it I bet a lot of ppl got refused like me and more bought steam keys on grey markets for cheaper prizes that can’t be refunded.
So no need to be rude there is a logical response to your question
