AMD is planning to launch their next-gen Ryzen 4000 series of “Zen 3” CPUs for the mainstream desktop and HEDT market later this year. Zen 3 is expected to offer “gamers” and end users a huge uplift in overall performance as well as efficiency.
Now, according to one leak posted by RetiredEngineer@chiakokhua, coming via Ice Universe, it looks like ZEN 3 CPUs are going to give us a significant amount of uplift in IPC.
Internal rumors circulating among engineers at two well-known OEMs indicate that the performance of current ZEN3 engineering samples have risen to an “Alarming” level. Do note that these are early “engineering” samples, so the final Retail products could easily feature even higher performance figures.
It has also been reported that these OEMs have compared the performance of Ryzen 4000 with Intel’s next-gen products, and based on these results, AMD’s Ryzen 4000 will utterly beat Intel in both “performance” and “power efficiency” figures. Most probably they are comparing these with Intel’s next-gen “Rocket Lake S” CPUs.
According to the same leaker, it is reported that AMD claims an IPC improvement for Zen 3 to be around 15-17%, but internal testing done by these two OEMs reveal that the IPC is even much better than AMD’s own claims.
AMD Ryzen 4000 chips which are based on the advanced “7nm+” architecture could feature an IPC increase of 15% to all the way up to 20% with the new “Zen 3” cores. This would be a major IPC uplift for Ryzen 4000 Zen 3 CPUs, assuming these results are accurate.
With ZEN 3 we can expect significant IPC gains, faster clocks, and higher efficiency. AMD recently confirmed that Zen 3 4’th gen Ryzen desktop CPUs will only be supported by the 500-series chipsets.
Though, there’s still a chance that AMD could allow BIOS revisions to be released for Ryzen 4000 compatibility, or at least on the 400 series chipsets such as “X470” and “B450”. This remains to be seen though.
The Ryzen 4000 series family would be the last generation of processors to support the AM4 socket because with Ryzen 5000 series, “ZEN4” architecture will be used which will require a new socket, as well as a new chipset.

awesome ! this is really good news.thanks for sharing this. I knew AMD is going to be on the top. can’t wait to see what zen3 has to offer. i’m not optimistic for intel on the other hand.
Bad news
…for Intel!
i wonder how desperate Intel is going to be for their next gen processor lineup, given AMD has shaken up the whole CPU market by storm.
in a last desperate measure, Intel can worse just keep on increasing higher clocks on their processors, accounting for insane high temps in the end, lol.
expect a 110 degree Celsius rated gaming INTEL CPU out of the oven.
they are buying time till the new architecture Jim Keller is working on sees the light and based on the 5 years he worked on ZEN it will be another year or two until they release a new architecture without all these security holes
you mean Jim Keller?
yes,sorry
Really hope they get to 7nm by 2022. I want AMD to crush them for a couple of years to gain serious market share, but it’ll suck for us if they’re non-competitive for too long.
AMD has already gained enough market share though.
They’re killing it in the DIY market, but I want to see them gain a strong foothold in the laptop, prebuilt, and server markets where the real money is made.
I agree.
Intel has a lot of money and one of the key engineers that worked on zen they will be competitive again no worries
what should worry you is AMD keeping their head together and not ruin this as they did once after Athlon
Tom Keller was key member in Athlon and Zen and now with Intel he will do it again especially with a much bigger budget
that man should worry you
When I upgraded in the fall, I went with an X570 board simply because I wanted more than 2 SATA ports that are on most B450 boards (and it was $150 for a good X570 board, which seemed like a reasonable pairing with my 3700X).
G0dd@mn am I glad I did. Feel really bad for B450 purchasers, AMD really needs to fix their marketing with AM5.
Excellent news!
Excellent news!
‘metal messiah’, you should be given a job here. also you have contributed a LOT these past few weeks, so i think they should also give you Mod/Admin rights on this website.
Couldn’t give a damn about either brand, and I certainly don’t understand all this brand loyalty nonsense. They have both let consummers down in the past.
I just want fast, cool and reliable parts for my PC and I don’t care which brand makes them.
Zen2 vs 9th gen: AMD IDGAF
Zen2 vs 10th gen (desktop or mobile): AMD IDGAF
Zen2 vs 11th gen mobile: AMD IDGAF harder, because of Zen3
Zen3 vs 11th gen desktop: AMD IDGAF.
Pretty much.
10th gen desktop will be competing with Zen 3 for most of its life, not Zen 2. So it’s even worse than that.
Sounds like waiting to upgrade was a good choice for me.
He has inside Industry sources though. He posted this from his “Weibo” Account.
Also, RetiredEngineer@chiakokhua, never tweets any rumor/leak from unconfirmed sources, or other fishy websites/channels.
I trust him more than “Ice universe” though, lol. Anyways, I also hope this turns out to be true.

New Intel 10th gen 10 core listing in my county AU$999
AMD 12 core AU$779
Good luck Intel when these Zen 3 cpu’s get here!
More domination/destruction/humiliation of Intel! Im all for that!!!
The blue needs to be humbled….
Sounds amazing, Man AMD seems unstoppable with their CPUs. The whole turn around they have achieved is freaking remarkable and a God send to the industry and us gamers and devs who need the juice.
Metal Messiah do you really think Zen 3 will be out this September or will it be pushed to December, what are your thoughts? Also you think HEDT / the next TR will really come out this year(usually they are later than Desktop base)? I guess if Zen 4 is dropping late next year the chances are pretty good. I have My doubts for some reason and My gut thinks it will be really late and more like Jan – Feb 2021.
Also good job Man m/ 🙂 m/ , keep it up for I love your articles and what you contribute to the site.

Hi, due to this whole COVID-19 situation I’m pretty sure the launch is going to get delayed for few more months.
Right now nothing is set on stone. We can only get a paper launch. The whole GLOBAL economy has been disturbed due to coronavirus. Like you said, 2021 seems like a safe bet, at least for ZEN 4, including the TR lineup.
I have a feeling that even ZEN 3 might delayed till early next year. You use “Threadripper” CPU for your work, animation, 2D/3D rendering, editing and other similar stuff ?
Yeah I think your right, it would be amazing if they kept their dates in such a climate right now. I suppose everyone will just have to wait and see, June might be a indication of where things a heading(I pray they are good).
That is right I have a Gen 1 TR 1950x, I use it for work: game engine development, game development, visual studio, VEGAS Pro 17, PS, etc and of course gaming!
The reason I asked a friend just built a Zen 2 TR build(which He loves) and I was wondering if He will regret it and should of waited for Zen 3(the new CPU). My thoughts are since Zen 3 is end of the year and He comes from a 1920x I am sure it was a good call. Also considering anyone who games or needs the Gen 4 IO right now Zen 2 is a huge pay off!
Also as we have heard 3000 and NAVI 2 are this summer(most likely), so those Zen 2 Gen 4 mobo’s are ready to go in the game department as another bonus for early buyers.

Glad to hear that m8. You have my RESPECT ~!! 😀

If u have ryzen 2600 or later. Its probably best to wait for the next chip set which will feature ddr5 and pcie 5.0 support. Better to upgrade your graphics card for now.
skip since it’s not compatible with 400 series..
I like AMD cpu’s. I just don’t trust AMD marketing. Wait until reviewers you trust have had a go through the cpu’s and benchmark them themselves. Anything AMD says is self serving anyway. AMD was doing really good. The marketing is still just as shady as the Bulldozer days.
Oh Intel will be obsolete for anything lol.
Already AMD has better IPC, and lacks behind very little. This will be the nail in the coffin for Intel.
