Epic Games Store now requires a Two-Factor Authentication while claiming free games till May 21st

Written by Metal Messiah

Epic Games has just announced that a two-factor authentication (2FA) will now be required periodically for those who want to claim FREE games from April 28 till May 21. The reason for this particular move remains unclear, but any added layer of “security and protection” is a welcome change for sure, according to the company, when it comes to Epic Games user accounts.

The Epic Games Store will require that all users enable a two-factor authentication before they can access the store’s weekly list of free games, while also trying to promote enhanced security measures amongst its user base.  This is a “temporary” move taken by the company though.

Few other companies have also been trying to convince users to adopt a two-factor authentication. But the Epic Games Store has appeared on the market much more recently than the others.

The store is having an aggressive marketing policy, while it also offers free games on a regular basis at the same time, trying to get a larger share of the pie more like. This new measure announced by the company will only apply to people who are trying to claim FREE games, which sounds a bit awkward, if you ask me.

If you do not have a two-factor authentication enabled on your EPIC games account, you will be greeted by the following message when trying an attempt to claim a free game:

“Two Factor Authentication Required.”

“Claiming this free game requires you to have Two-Factor Authentication setup on your account. Two-Factor authentication provides an additional level of security to your Epic Games account and will help prevent unauthorized access.”

This new security feature is available to everyone; and it can be activated any time. Epic store recommends keeping this option as “enabled”. If you don’t have this security feature enabled, then you might be required to provide the codes while claiming new games on the storefront.

While there is no official reason given for this particular security measure, this move from EPIC games does arrive after Nintendo also asked people to enable two-factor on their devices, following a data leak that affected 160,000 accounts.

  1. What’s so special about those dates ONLY? Will it be the Twilight Of The Gods? Its Serta coming to destroy the Gods? Like what the Fuq is so special about those specific dates Only… ??

      1. Yeah, couldn’t have said it any better. I’m curious to know what’s happening or gonna happen. Is he gonna probe us or something?..

        1. He can do anything though, lol. But I think he might force and implement this 2FA method even for the PAID purchases made on EGS in the coming months.

Sweeney is greedy as hell. This also doesn’t come as a surprise since EPIC games has been making “exclusive” deals with publishers and developers.

Seriously, WTF is this exclusivity all about ? Each and every new AAA or AA game released goes to EGS for 1 year ! This is pathetic, since STEAM and GOG are more popular that Epic games store platform.

I don’t get this exclusivity deal. Maybe EPIC is offering a larger share of profit to the Game devs and publishers, but this move seems greedy and selfish to me.

But why drop support for STEAM ? This is ridiculous. We have to wait for 6 months or even a YEAR to play the EGS-exclusive on STEAM, when it releases on this platform. I”m skeptical to try EGS. I won’t support this recent move from developers.

STEAM has always been the main PC gaming platform. Not releasing the Game on STEAM is a very bad and selfish move from the publisher/developer, IMO.

          1. I think the way Sweeney looks at it is to tempt gamers into signing up for EGS accounts and getting them used to using EGS by offering exclusives and free games and hoping that they will buy some more games there too.

What he’s failing to see is that he needs to offer a better service at the same time. EGS launched 1 1/2 years ago with a promise that it would one day rival Steam but there has been little progress on improving the service. Hell, they don’t even have a basic feature like a Shopping Cart which every other game store has and it’s still listed as a long term goal. I usually wait for a good sale and buy 5 or 6 games at a time. I don’t trust storing my CC info, name, address etc there so I would have to go through the entire process of entering that data 5 or 6 times for each game.

There is a reason why Steam is so popular. They provide a much superior experience for gamers.

I think eventually his Store is just going to remain mediocre and millions will buy the exclusives and take the free games but spend little or no money on anything else. Some, like myself, won’t even buy the exclusives. I just wait for the exclusivity period to be over and buy from Steam or GOG.

          2. Basically, with teh exclusivity deals this is where you learn that apparently it’s not about making games for people to play, it all boils down to money. In other words if epic bought a game for 1 year and didn’t release it to the public at all but still paid the publishers/devs, they’d go along with the deal. They are getting so much money from these deals that it doesn’t matter if anyone buys the game or not it more than make up for the sales they aren’t getting. And here is the insulting [part, they know that in 6 months to a year the game will be on steam, so it will make money as if nothing happened plus the millions they got from epic. It’s win win and the only loser is ME & YOU!

Get this, The ME AND YOU that they made the game for in the first place, DON’T GET TO GODDAMN PLAY IT!!! Don’t get me start on those male chicken suckers, because I STILL Can’t play Metro Exodus, because the last thing i wanna do is support those bloody practices and then have it come to GoG where i could’ve gotten it DRM FREE. This industry just keeps kicking gamers in the face cause they know, gamers ave very low standards and just wanna play. The gaming community is where you go to watch people stand for nothing and fall for everything.

  2. I just got Amnesia and Crashlands, didn’t asked for 2FA. I guess Epic can’t do anything right with their store.
