Left 4 Dead is a video-game series that a lot of PC gamers would love see it return. And, back in 2014, we shared some screenshots from a Left 4 Dead project in Source 2 Engine. Since then, we heard some rumours, however, Valve has denied all of them. And thankfully, Valve’s developers have shed some light on whether a new Left 4 Dead game is currently under development.
As Valve’s Chris Remo and Robin Walker told IGN, the team was indeed working on a Left 4 Dead 3 project a few years ago. However, that project was only used for developing Source 2 Engine and nothing more.
“We used parts of a Left 4 Dead level as the first bit of level geometry to start building in Source 2, so a bit of that got out. It was essentially a rendering test, and people thought that meant we were working on Left 4 Dead.
We built lots of different things as part of building technology in Source 2… There were groups here who would generate a product in mind that would attempt to be a target for Source 2, and so a couple of those were Left 4 Dead-related things, but none of them reached the point where we were like, ‘now this is a product team that we’re going to build a big product around.’ They were more tools for moving Source 2 forward.”
And that is that. Unfortunately, there isn’t currently any Left 4 Dead 3 game under development. I’m certain that this will disappoint most of the game’s fans. After all, most of them were hoping for a new part in this series. However, that’s not going to happen any time soon.

will we get source engine 3 ?
I hope they skip 3 and release 4 this year
Newell just pisses on gamers anymore with the exception of Steam which is run very well.
Where is a conclusion to Gordon Freeman’s story?
Where is Portal 3?
Where is Left 4 Dead 3?
Valve is not the same anymore… Valve right not is developing new kind of fans and new kind of customers, i think they are not going to go back to what’s makes valve special for us all this years.
Are their new fans just people browsing the store?
No, there new fans play Artifact and prepare for Artifact 2 and buy expensive hardware and being extremely a**holes to anyone who disagree with them.
You pretty much described most threads in the HL Alyx forums.
But Artifact has no players…
Go ask Valve…
You don’t need expensive hardware to play Alyx. Have you wonder why they are being a**holes? They’re genuinely excited for the future of gaming and there are mongoloids who keep saying “VR is a gimmick.” There were signs that there was going to be a Valve VR game as early as 2015, and now people are upset?
VR is a gimmick my friend… and the mongoloids are open there mouths for 3hrs or more in front of a screen slapped in there faces, thinking they are way better than the rest of the world, VR fanatic is worse than the console peasant…

If VR is a gimmick, what headset have you tried?
“THEIR” and “THERE…learn the difference.
Find a dictionary, tw*t.
Alyx looks f*ckign amazing in all serious. I want to get an Index for that game specifically.
All VR games have really gimmicky, nonsensical looking gameplay but Alyx is the first one that ever looks like a real game.
I have been playing Alyx and it’s quite good, albeit terrifying
There are more… -_-
Maybe open your eyes. And you’re really blind for someone who wants to cough up a grand for a damn Index for a single frickin’ game.
I don’t want to and I know of more VR-games that are proper games. I’ll still wait for there to be more and better games and prices of VR-sets to drop. – Why would I spend 1060 Dollars just for “Alyx” right now when I could purchase much more interesting and longer lasting things than that?…
Valve’s pre-Alyx games made them special.
Steam is just a store.
Valve thrives on cliffhangers, unfinished stories, and exhibiting disrespectful silence to all the fans that gave them success.
Releasing a spin off that not many will be able play was a middle finger to be sure.
Well it makes sense with their design philosophy. They don’t want to make games they know they won’t be happy/satisfied with making, so instead they’ll just improve upon what they have, and possibly revisit the past in the near future.
I’d rather wait for a fully fleshed out, well polished L4D3, using say, Source 3, than what we have now.
“Well it makes sense with their design philosophy.”
Their design philosophy is not releasing a third sequel.
The issue is that kind of thinking leads to a never ending cycle. The devs think the players expected better and take longer to develop, and so the players expect better because the devs is taking longer to develop. Normally something breaks eventually, most likely when the devs need to release something for sale. But since the devs here is Valve, they can sit on their piles of money forever. Its not always good when devs are forced to release something, like how EA does to their devs, but on the other side we see here what happens when devs have no commitment to pursue.
I really doubt Valve will release L4D3 if they are not going to release HL3. Even if they do have a Source 3 engine to show, its likely they will make a new series as the showcase. A new series has less expectation from the players, and that allows Valve to both be more creatively opened and have less backlash if the new idea fails. Again, since this Valve, they are not forced to rely on their popular series to sell games, as original games sell with the Valve name alone, so they are not pressured to used existing series like other devs are.
wasn’t Source 2 meant for this Gen?
or did it just skip an entire generation?
If so, I don’t think it will be jaw-dropping in terms of visuals. then again Valve games never were. very nice looking but never wowed ME at least
Have you seen Alyx? It looks incredible and runs great. They have a baller engine and a new type of entertainment fully realized for the first time. It’s a great time to be alive if you have money.
I agree, Alyx does look amazing mainly due to the fact that the engine was upgraded with VR in mind.
“It’s a great time to be alive if you have money.”
That would be any time mostly, provided the money have value.
Buy a few gold and silver Eagles. You probably won’t make any profit from them but they will always have value to buy essentials if you ever need them.

Valve games never were? Half-Life 2 was one of the best looking games in 2004. Still holds up today.
I don’t see how our comments contrast
It doesn’t hold up in my view… That’s the problem with it; It was overrated.
Just 3 years later the CryEngine appeared and blew everything away. And while that was overrated in a way as well, it holds up better in 13 years than the Source Engine did in 3 years.
Your problem, then. HL2 holds nicely in 2020. The lighting, the shadows, the view distance, the facial animations. For real it’s kinda sad when a 2004 game has better facial animations than some recent AAA games. Also, overrated is not and never will be an argument. Anything i don’t like is overrated, like Fortnite and CoD. Nah, Source Engine stills holds up just as well as CryEngine. I mean, look at Black Mesa. It’s on Source. And looks fantastic. HL2 on 4k looks even better.
People were all “blown away” by the HL2 Source Engine, but I was never wowed either, considering other games surpassed it. I think people were just in awe of the game, which is fair enough, but they shouldn’t have acted like they were the most amazing graphics ever. – Same for ‘Crysis’ a few years later, which was already way more impressive visually and it still holds up, many years longer than the HL2 did. But it wasn’t the most perfectly amazing stuff.
They can release how many VR spin-off’s and prequels they want. Just make the game the OG HL fans have been waiting for. I get that they try to pander to newer audiances, but they shouldn’t forget the fans that have supported them, and literally kept Half-Life, as a franchise, alive.
The older gamers think that Half-Life is perfect game specially the 1st one, the new gamers think it’s a just a thing to showcase a technology. just look at the so called reviews on the steam page of Alyx non of them talk about the story… And If you look at the negative comments… read the answers…
That was literally all Half Life ever was. You’re out of your mind wrong about this if you think differently. Literally the whole entire original god d*mn showcase for Source and HL2 was the physics engine. From the Pachinko Barrel Machine, to the shaders. Half-life 1 originally was for the technology factor if you’re old enough to remember that, which I doubt you are.
It’s always been about technology and a showcase of that. You think differently because you’re completely blinded by nostalgia on what they were.
Alyx just so happens to be one of the more apparent game Valve has made where the technology factor is quite apparent and obvious.
Gaben hate number 3,so all Valve games stop at number 2 whether it has cliffhanger ending or not..and Source 3 engine wont happen, since they will change the name to avoid number “3”
A lot of :”give me bread and butter” “How dare you make a chocolate cake? Chocolate is bad, because i said so!”
Gabe saw The Godfather and Mad Max movies and decided it’s not worth the risk .
FML.
Ofc its not a real game. If its L4D3, it has to be a normal game and not VR. VR games wont use the main series and the numbers. Valve only cares about those things and Dota… so yeah.
I never expected a new zombie game from them
Fix it immediately.
Hahah all the little girls crying acting like Valve “owes them” a 3.
These games belong to Valve. Even with Gabe’s philosophy of empowering gamers to create their own content, it doesn’t matter, Gabe has been as explicit as possible about it.
HL1 was made at a time where first person shooters were stagnant – they sucked at telling story, they didn’t have interesting worlds, and no matter how good they were, they were still missing something. HL1 changed that forever and every game afterward tried to copy it, most unsuccessfully like Duke Forever.
HL2 was made at a time where FPS games had advanced to be half decent, but they were all still one or two trick ponies – Far Cry had a big world with decent graphics. Doom 3 had….”decent graphics.” SOF2 had location specific dismemberment. IGI had a large open world. HL2 had everything.
When the next evolutionary step in FPS games shows itself, Valve will be the one to take it.
