I’d say that some people will say that you do, but if you don’t want to, the game is so good that you instantly won’t care.
No.
There is no real need to play the first two games. TW3 is a very good entry point in fact. BUT, if you decided to play them anyway, I suggest you skip the first one and play the second. The first one has not aged well and is really for the hardcore fans of the series now.
I’d say mods are definitely not needed for a first playthrough. TW3 in general is a very competent game by itself, and doesn’t rely on mods to make it worthwhile. Though of course you can check some of the graphical mods like the one we have here which improves textures, if you are into that sort of thing.
The first one is great but the combat is completely different. The story is great though. You get a much better appreciation for the story if you play the first two games.
I have played the first one and although I agree about the story being good, most people I konw can’t come to terms with its clunkiness/crudeness, old graphics, combat and general lack of polish compared to the other entries, and will abandon it mid-game, and if it is their first experience with the series, there is a risk of them abandoning the series without checking the other ones.
Hence my suggestion of the TW3 as the entry point.
I recently tried out the first Witcher (as my first Witcher game; I haven’t played any other game in the series yet) and I think it’s a good title, not really “for the hardcore fans of the series”. It’s crude, but if you can forgive it its age, you will soon get used to it and appreciate it. Also, combat is weird but also kinda refreshing and satisfying.
Well most, if not all of my friends who tried it couldn’t come to terms with its clunkiness/crudeness, old graphics, combat and general lack of polish compared to the other entries, and abandoned it mid-game. Hence my suggestion of “for the hardcore fans of the series”. Especially considering our friend here is on the fence whether to try the game or not, I definitely suggest TW3 as the entry point, as it is the most polished and famous/enjoyable/appealing one for most people. If they enjoyed the story and want more, they can check the other two. Why not.
Personally, I didn’t like at all the first two games, which feel very outdated compared to the third one.
Story-wise, you don’t need them at all.
As for modding the game, it’s okay as long as they’re just graphics mods which don’t change the experience.
You can use Beautiful Grass, STLM – Super Turbo lighting Mod, The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, etc.
I would be a bit more hesitant about HDMR – HD Monsters Reworked mod, because I feel that some monsters look a bit too different from the vanilla ones.

i don’t mind outdated graphic, i enjoy playing old games. As matter of fact i’m playing witcher 1 right now, haven’t got time to finish it. Compared to Witcher 3 of course it’s very outdated, the dialog is terrible, very very bad. But i enjoy it.
Witcher 2 is by far best in series. W3 visuals are only good thing about it compared to 2nd.
There is a mood to be found in the witcher games. Honestly to me the mood kinda starts from the first game. You do get to see recurring characters and i mean even in the series they used the opening intro of the game that kinda feels cool for someone who is just starting but has watched already the series with the pozzed cast.
that said, is it a must? No.
I would recommend starting with no.2 and then going to 3. No.2 on easy should only take a weekend to finish assuming you can dedicate hours to it.
As for mods as Lilly said, stick to the graphical mods. This aint skyrim. You dont want to mess with it too much first time around.
