YouTube’s ‘koooolalala’ has shared a mind blowing real-time tech video for Unreal Engine 4, showing some of the best Storm effects we’ve ever seen. This video was running in real-time on the PC, and showcases what the next-gen experience that PCs can offer.
The artist used Unreal Engine 4.23 and Speedtree in order to create this scene. Moreover, koooolalala used the VICODynamics and Custom Lens Flare VFX plugins.
Unfortunately, koooolalala did not reveal the specs of the PC that was used. As such, I’m not sure whether next-generation consoles will be able to come close to these effects. Moreover, this is a tech demo and – most of the times – tech demos are more impressive than actual games.
It’s also worth noting that koooolalala has been constantly showcasing some of the best demos for Unreal Engine 4. Back in 2016, koooolalala released a beautiful frosty forest tech demo in Unreal Engine 4. In 2014, the artist also released some amazing UE4 tech videos. Still, nothing can come close to what he has managed to achieve with the following video.
Seriously, these weather effects are among the best we’ve seen and we can’t wait until games feature similar effects. So go ahead and watch the video, you will be blown away.
Enjoy!
UPDATE:
koooolalala used 20 trees (70000 poly each, no lod) and 100 bushes (6000 poly each, no lod) in order to create this scene. The demo was also running with 35-60fps at 1080p on a GTX970 on Epic/High settings. Moreover, the artist did not optimize this scene, meaning that it could run even better.
Thanks F.x.

Eh.. if I would have 3 kidneys to I can sell one and get an 1080ti…
Dont you dare sell your kidneys for that cheap! Ask at least for an RTX Titan man! Worths maybe even a 2nd kidney for reals!
Yeah! Think big! I want RTX! And Intel octacore! And new gaming mouse for my kidney!
Excellent!
This would be even more awesome if the spacebar would spawn NPC’s that would run through the guantlet of debris, and try to keep their balance/ragdoll appropriately when hit. I’d buy that for a dollar.
NICE MOVIE, TOO BAD I CANT SEE HOW IT ENDS
This is how Crysis 2 should look 🙂
This looks amazing, but as you said, we won’t see this in a game..
The only game who goes in the direction is Gears of War 4 with some neat weather/physics scenes
John he mentioned his specs in the comment section 3h ago:
I read a lot of “you need a quantic nasa computer to run that” so here is some stats :
– no optimization at all
– no pre-baked animation
– 20 trees (70000 poly each, no lod)
– 100 bushes (6000 poly each, no lod)
– 35-60fps 1080p on a gtx970 (with epic/high quality)
The fact that we can achieve this so easily is great. Maybe we won’t make a standard of out this, but there will always be one company willing to take an approach on such direction… but we might be dead when that day will come.
we can achieve this so “easily” because it’s just the scene you’re seeing, nothing else going on. you couldn’t build a city with this fidelity without very elaborate LOD management. also the guy is a talented artist and probably took a lot of time to create and tweak things. for an open world game nobody could deliver this kind of attention to detail.
NEXT GEN!!! uses GTX 970.. LOL
to think postal 4 runs on the same engine and looks like sht
Speaking Of… Have you seen the system requirements? Funny Stuff https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f0ddd7da5c959fff65b00ba68aafb3b90ee8bdc01bc679321bf0f03768663e9e.jpg
i hope steam doesnt come after them.
Games and pre-rendered videos with nothing else going on are completely different concepts.
days gone also run on unreal engine 4
That looks incredible! Man, it would be something to have it in-game!
I don’t know why, but I’d play a survival game based around a Hurricane that ravages an area if there was a sequence at the beginning of each game where you had to go through the actual storm with storm effects as good as this. Then you have to survive over the course of a few weeks before you can get help and have to scavenge peoples destroyed houses, survive, etc.
Interesting idea, sadly we’ll never see something like this used in an actual game.
Now if somebody can figure out how to make and contain an entire AAA videogame in this tiny little area with this fixed camera perspective, we are sorted lol.
Any best guesses on when we’ll be able to play a game that looks like that? Who will likely be the studio? Is this so new that companies havent started using it or is it just a matter of being too difficult to do an entire game like this?
Which will literally never ever be in any game ever made ever.
what? dude, how awesome this looks like..
