Electronic Arts showcases next-generation hair rendering, giving us a glimpse at next-gen graphics

Electronic Arts and DICE have released some videos, showcasing the new hair rendering techniques that have been implemented in the Frostbite Engine. As the publisher noted, its goal is to produce a step change in real-time hair and reach results close to movie and offline rendering.

Moreover, these videos will offer you a glimpse into how future Frostbite-powered games will look like. In other words, EA and DICE will aim to provide these new hair rendering techniques in their upcoming next-generation games.

The videos below show dynamic changes of the hair melanin and smoothness parameters (which produces a natural colour change), a dynamic change of an artificial colouring of the hair, as well as volume preservation.

EA and DICE will reveal more videos these upcoming weeks regarding the next-generation capabilities of the Frostbite Engine, so stay tuned for more!

      1. How do you fix a game making it an incredible GOTY nominated single player game, when its online only though?

  1. Looks dope. Although I doubt this is EA’s doing.

This is something almost entirely in DICE’s domain.

    1. I mean, yeah, but they’re funded by EA.

Looks nice but how does it perform ? That’s the question.

      1. Judging from the past it probably runs really well. Frostbite is one of the best performing engines around.

          1. Is it not true? Most if not all games that run on frostbite both look and run really well. BF1, Mirrors Edge 2, SWBF2, Dragon Age etc.

      2. DICE is entirely owned by EA. They aren’t “funded” by EA. They literally are EA. IDK why people continue to make this distinction.

        1. I hate when people say this. Just because a company is owned by another company doesn’t mean the company loses it’s identity. Lexus (the car brand/company) isn’t non existent because it is owned by Toyota.

DICE is a studio that makes games. EA is a publishers that publishes games. EA owns DICE. DICE still gets to make internal decisions and have their own brand.

        2. Right, point being EA is very much a part of this. It’s not a case of “DICE is behind this but EA had no hand in it”.

    1. Hairoworks was so overrated that when switched off or on I literally never lost a single frame

    1. The photorealism hair around a goats bum hole will be the judge of that. 😉

  2. So,now this engine can also render “other hair” realistically…nude mods incoming

  3. it’s EA, don’t get your hopes up, they will find a way to ruin it or only impement it in shallow uninteresting games

    1. Like most AAA these days. With the exception of very few, most have pivoted their entire companies and projects to better position themselves for monetized scheming and flat out lying to consumers but never getting charged with false advertising. The laws will catch up though.

  4. Nothing next gen about it. Just like “muh ray tracing” this is 15 years old technology finally being applied to real-time rendering in game engines now that tech is getting almost fast enough to handle a gimped version of it.

    1. mate. i long for nfs games, i played nfs 1, 2 most wanted and carbon recently, now i am in pro street, my god, wtf is wrong with pro street..

      1. Different game engine but still enjoyable, if you’re still not enjoying it I would move on to Shift2

  5. …What for ? EA’s seeing a market in… hairdressing games or something ? Because all I see is more needless pressure on the CPU.

GO MAKE RED ALERT 4 YOU PIECE OF SH*T !!! With some B-tier list actors hamming it up to the skies and more ridiculous units and stuff ! NONE OF THAT MOBILE CRAP ! We don’t NEED any more fancy graphics, it’s fancier that we ever even needed in the first place ! Studios spend so much money they could be using on so much more needed things instead !

  6. Oh thank god at last! There was only 1 single solitary problem with EA games and just like always, they will listen to the consumers and respect their opinions.
BETTER HAIR PEOPLE! THE FUTURE IS NOAW!

    1. “with enemies and NPCs you can see literally kilometers away from you?”

      Video, or it didnt happen.

  7. Racist! Exclusionary! Toxic! Hate crime! White supremacists!

No afro hair or dreadlocks rendered? EA DICE’s recent wokeness didn’t last long.

“DICE will reveal more videos these upcoming weeks”

So EA DICE prioritised white people over people of colour.

Racist! Exclusionary! Toxic! Hate crime! White supremacists!

    1. Agreed. Together with Tin Sweeney and Epic games, let us fight wokeness.

Join the fight and buy a game from Epic store to support them.

        1. LMAO, yeah some severe Azz brain damage man. I had to do a double take on what i’m reading.

          1. Don Quixote and Fernando Díaz <3 are, if nothing else, at least smart enough to get paid for their incessant Tencent shilling but Amith Thomas actually means it for real.

            NURSE!

          2. Haha, i bet you do this for a living, “Destroying Shills”. Because you are way too good at this sh*t man. One day i shall buy you a beer my friend.

          3. Haha! I won’t say no to a nice cold beer, fella.

Oh my, his lunacy continues! I won’t be dignifying his latest replies since but will instead take a hearty belly laugh at him.

          4. Can confirm, totally meant it for real. Now lets start a petition to make Epic Game Store mandatory for all PC games.

The nurse has arrived, I’ll go so that she can give you your medicine

          5. Dude… you are such a lame troll. Juan and Don Quixote are mentally retarded, but at least they know that, and don’t even try to troll. But you… you are really trying too hard. It’s pretty painful to read all that without cringing a bit.

          6. “It’s pretty painful to read all that without cringing a bit.”

So like the rest of the comments section on this site.

          7. That’s the funny thing. Most of those comments are not trolling or ironic.

And many still manage to be 10x more cringeworthy than anything I’ve ever written while trolling.

        2. Yes Bub, together we will help fight brain disease, with the support of Tim Sweeney and Epic.

I’m thinking at this point we just start donating instead of buying because that’s how good Epic Game Store is. They deserve it.

      1. Tim Swiney fighting against wokeness after virtue signalling about how he wouldn’t allow adult games? Ha!

      1. What worries me the most is the fact that we live in a world where you read something like this and you think it might not be satire
