Back in December 2018, we informed you about the cancelled remakes of the first classic Mortal Kombat games. And while a lot of people believed that Blind Squirrel Games was working on new remasters for these fighting games, it appears that this remastered collection has also been cancelled.
Let’s take things from the beginning though. In 2017, the team behind Mortal Kombat HD Kommunity, also known as Mortal Kombat HD Remix and Mortal Kombat Returns, was given the green light to develop remasters of the first three Mortal Kombat games. However, and out of nowhere, Warner Bros informed the team in early 2018 that it no longer needed it for this particular project.
As our source told us back in December 2018.
“At the end of August we were once again in front of Ed Boon, this time presenting a playable version of Mortal Kombat Returns. Ed loved it and not soon after he advocated to WB executives that they should talk to us about partnering to release the game.
After several pitches later to the highest level of WB’s production, finance and sales teams, the team received a call saying, “Your project is heading toward a green light.”
After about a week another phone call, “Sorry we’ve decided to go in a different direction and we won’t be needing your group. We can’t trust development of such an important project to a team without any completed game titles.” This occurred around mid January 2018.”
Since then, a lot speculated that another team was working on this remastered collection. Rumours surfaced in late 2018, suggesting that Blind Squirrel was working on Mortal Kombat Trilogy Remaster and we can now confirm that while the team was indeed working on this project, it has also been cancelled.
Danny Huynh, Concept Artist and UI Artist at Blind Squirrel Games, has shared the first screenshots from this remaster. Huynh confirms that this project is cancelled and that his primary role on the project was to “set the quality bar for the UI and FX while maintaining the look of the trilogy of the series.”
Mortal Kombat Remastered, known back then as Mortal Kombat Kollection Online, would also feature a new mode, called the Krypt mode. According to Huynh, this game mode was meant to introduce a new way to play the original trilogy, and he was task to create a look of how players would interact and move throughout the game mode.
Last but not least, Huynh shared some screenshots from the remastered Scorpion’s fire fatality and Sub-Zero’s Freeze special move.
Before closing, I should also note that those interested can download the cancelled versions of Mortal Kombat HD Remix (not the one that Blind Squirrel was working on) from here.
Enjoy!

Kinda makes sense. I mean they have been hyping the Kell out of Mortal Kombat 11.
All I want from an MK game is for them to get rid of all that metered rubbish on screen. And as a result it will get rid of all that x-ray rubbish as well. There are like 6-8 different bars on your screen now. I would love a Klassic mode that removes all that rubbish from current day MK games.
So you want a generic fighting game with basic fighting mechanics that hasn’t evolved since early/mid 90’s… you’re INSANE! ¬_¬
Modern MK games are soo revered and held in such high esteem because of the level of polish and effort that goes into the overall gameplay mechanics and presentation.. and i am a Tekken player primarily with an appreciation of MK but i assure you if MK cut out the things you’re mentioning the game would disappear into insignificance.
full with bugs and unbalanced
Geeez if they did that they would end up going broke and closing down the doors…
I’d have played this.
ED Boon just dont give a sh*t about old school MK anymore. Sad.
Yeah the new mk is garbage. With all the meters and x-rays rubbish the game has become so bloated and of the rails with all this foolishness.
Like Ed Boon had anything to even do with it…
wow so we are getting the garbage MK11 SJW edition instead of this ?
“would also feature a new mode, called the Krypt”
ummm i remember the ps2 games had a mode called the krypt were you unlocked stuff like costumes, artwork, etc
Would have been a crap remake seeing as how MK2 is the isonly good 1 of the 3 IMO. Agree about all the stupid meters and SJW MK 11 though

What’s wrong with Sub-Zero’s hand? And don’t get me started on Scorpion’s arm.
