Dark Crystal Games has published its first gameplay video for its old-school isometric post-apocalyptic RPG, Encased. Taking the viewer through character creation and a walk-through of the prologue the 20-minute clip showcases the game’s non-linear storytelling and responsiveness to player choice.
At character creation, the player chooses an avatar, assigns attribute points, and chooses one of five faction – ‘Wings’ – of the CRONUS Foundation. The selected Wing gives you starting bonuses, and lead to interesting possibilities and unique story choices. The selected Wing applies appropriate preset Stat values, but the player is free to redistribute these to customize their character and make a scientist with more brawn than brains, or a highly intelligent ex-con laborer.
The Wing the player selects for their character heavily influences the prologue experience – dialogues and NPC reactions will vary greatly, making Encased highly replayable. The video gameplay follows two different story flows, telling NPC stories from just two of the many available points of view, while showcasing the elaborate dialog system.
Vyacheslav Kozikhin, head of the project, said:
“The prologue is our first available location. We want to show everyone not just how far we’ve progressed, but also how much variety and choice we’ve already built into our game. We’re telling a non-linear, choice-based and deeply immersive character story, where the player’s experience heavily depends on their alignment, their decisions, and their responses. Who they are, what they say, and what they do – in our world, they all matter.”

Looks exactly like what I imagine Van Buren(Fallout 3) would have played and looked like had Black Isle Studios been able to create it and not gone out of business back in 2003. Going to keep my eye on this because it looks promising, and the Kickstarter page makes it seem like it will be very good if they can complete it.
have you heard of a little game called atom rpg
I have, I’m waiting for it to leave Early Access before I play it since I don’t like buying EA games.
Did you play Underrail? and the Fallout mods Fallout 1.5 and Fallout Nevada? All of those are highly recommended.
Yes I have! Underrail was absolutely fantastic, and I’m going to start working on another playthrough after I get done with Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Which has sucked my life away since it’s so damn good.
Hold that playthrough, there’s an expansion for Underrail releasing (hopefully) early next year.
I’ll play through it again right after when the new expansion comes out! I’ll probably be done with the play-through fairly quickly, so it will be fresh when the expansion comes.
Thanks for reminding me about the Expansion again.
I don’t want anything that involves strategy, tactics or thinking. I just want to shoot things in a first-person perspective, in video games and in real-life.
How can someone play it, i watched it for 5 minutes and almost fall asleep and I just woke up and took a shower.
As the title of the video suggest, it’s 20 minutes of ‘narrative’ gameplay, so…
