First HD Texture Pack for Shenmue is now available for download

The Shenmue I&II collection has just been released on the PC and as you may have guessed, it features a lot of low-resolution and blurry textures. Thankfully, modder ‘Drogean’ is currently working on a HD Texture pack for it and has released its first version.

As the modder noted, this mod features recreated HD textures for environments (these new textures are not upscaled versions of the default textures). Right now, the textures featured are for the game’s large environmental areas.

So far, the modder has tweaked some existing Yamanose textures, added street texture for Dobuita, added Yamanose tree leaves/shrubs/bush sprites, reworked some of the road and grass textures, and added Yamanose patchy dirt and two brick wall textures.

This HD Texture Pack requires Kaldien’s Special K mod and those interested can download the pack from here. The modder has also released HD textures for Ryo’s clothes that you can download from here. Modder ‘hope3090’ has also released another HD Texture Pack for Shenmue that changes 7 textures walls and somes doors, and you can download it from here.

Drogean has also shared some comparison screenshots between the HD and the vanilla versions of Shenmue’s textures that you can find below (you can also find here a Live Comparison Preview).

  1. Shenmue is one of those fan favourites i.e. exactly the kind of game that attracts a disproportionate amount of modding support.

  2. It’s good someone creating this hd texture pack…playing this while watching low res texture is irritating..

  3. Why fans almost always must do the publisher/dev job for something they actually paid them for when buying the game is beyond me. Re-release the same old games but with a new, modern price. That’s just amazing. Totally not a cash grab for the most nostalgic fans at all.

    1. How is $15 a game a modern price? How is it a cash-grab giving fans, explicitly, what they wanted? A PORT of Shenmue I&II, not remaster. Remaster would have been nice but then you’d be complaining about them charging even more money for “just a remaster”.

Think it’s time you get a clue on how to complain about exploitation in this industry because it isn’t here in this instance.

      1. It’s not a port either, it’s a conversion. A port is simply bringing a game to a new platform(like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for example). Shenmue 1 & 2 have a lot of enhancements, which make them way more than a port but not a remaster because they didn’t actually remaster video nor audio(because they literally couldn’t do it with the code of the first game).

    2. I’m getting exactly what I wanted with these. I didn’t want new textures and new models, I wanted the Dreamcast games, and $15 a game is not that much to ask at all considering how much time you can sink into each one of these.

      1. Well, that kinda was my point – that the fans will buy it anyway without thinking too much about it. And because the fanbase looks quite big (they were classics after all) then this is SEGA’s master plan to grab some easy cash from the most dedicated fans. But what about non-fans, who don’t even know these games yet? They were forgotten completely. With this PC’s first official release and the Shenmue III coming to PC and PS4 in 2019, SI&II are not Dreamcast-exclusive games anymore. And Dreamcast doesn’t even exist anymore, it’s a long dead platform. We don’t live in 1999-2000 anymore… especially that Steam is a modern platform where good re-releases of the classics could also drive more people to these series, which they don’t know yet (but wish to know) but at the same time don’t want to be forced to look at all this old technology that’s obsolete since 18 years, like for example blurry textures and 30fps. Seriously, take even just 30fps in a PC game, not even mentioning other problems… when gamers today have 60Hz screens, many with 120Hz+, and even 240Hz can be bought. That’s obviously just my opinion, as a non-fan, because I’ve never played those games, but if the re-releases were really worth it (and in my opinion they aren’t worth the money in this state) I would totally check them out one day. With Shenmue III releasing in a year in my opinion this re-release seems just like a greatly missed opportunity. Especially that today there are lots of more gamers on the world than they were in 2000.

I recently played Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition (which I also never played before, but I checked it out this year because it had very good opinions, and a very good re-release), so a game also from 1999, and that’s the kind of re-releases that I like to see more on PC. It even gives you the choice if you want to play in the old way, or the new way, you can change it at any time, and there are many options that modernize the experience to each one’s tastes. Take also the StarCraft I Remaster, which also is 15$. And those are something really worth the money, because they’re not just an easy cash grab for the most nostalgic fans, but they were made to also drive modern gamers to those games, and have many changes for the better + also the option to go back and play “the old way”, just like it was. And there are more of those, not just 2D izometric games, but also 3D games. And this approach really works for any type of fan or non-fan at the same price! And that’s how it’s supposed to be done, in my opinion of course – a person who doesn’t only live in the past, but also in the present, and at the same time looks to the future.

      1. Nah, this was mistakenly vague on my part. I meant requiring Kaldien’s mod. Nothing against Drogean whatsoever.

  4. well i was considering buying the game for 23$ on instant gaming but then i saw the mod
day and night difference, typed Shenmue 1&2 and got a Codex download

at this point, if Sega thinks i’m gonna pay 30$ for a “remaster” with zero f**king graphical difference, 30 FPS lock and no bonus content whatsoever they’re deeply mistaken

    1. It was never, EVER, called a remaster by SEGA. It’s also two games, so more like $15 a game. And complaining about 30 FPS in a game with a deliberately slow pace is just about as stupid and misinformed as you can get. It’s not a shooter or racing game.

      1. course it isn’t it’s supposed to be an immersive Japan simulator
with some QTE’s and fighting on the side

as for 30 FPS, engine wise i know it’s not viable
but i don’t give a $hit, at least give us an OPTION to turn to 60 FPS
and they COULD’VE done something about this prior to release
but nope, here’s a pre-packed emulator with 2 games which existed on the Dreamcast emulator for a decade+
        now give me 30$

i might Grab Shenmue 3 though, since it’s supposed to be brand new (it’s gonna be a port isn’t it?)

  5. It’s 2018 and people are still trying to convince me that Shenmue was some sort of a masterpiece, when in reality it wasn’t even that great of a game and everybody looks back on it with the rosiest of rose colored glasses.

    1. The textures were never supposed to be changed. That wasn’t part of the plan. Also, these new textures are so hit and miss. Makes the game look disjointed and hits cohesiveness.

        1. Not everything needs mods. Quake, for instance, would probably lose a lot of its charm if you modded out the base textures. And I’m not a kid, jackass, probably older than you.

          1. Also, “MODS” is an open source free to choose how you want to implement it. In your situation, you don’t have to, planned or not. It’s not your decision, and it never was. Don’t stress too much over this old man or else your blood pressure might get too high. How is that gaut btw?
