Back in 2014, Deep Silver announced the sequel to Dead Island, Dead Island 2. Dead Island 2 was originally developed by YAGER and was powered by Unreal Engine 4. However, a year later, Deep Silver revealed that YAGER was no longer working on it, and that was the last time we heard about this open-world zombie game. Until today.
When a fan asked about the status of this project, the official Twitter account of Dead Island responded and confirmed that the game was still under development, though the team will not show anything until it’s ready.
What's going on is that it's in development and we won't be showing more until we're ready. Appreciate the wait is painful, but Dead Island 2 is still coming.

Back in 2015, Deep Silver stated that it will continue working towards bringing its vision of Dead Island 2 to life, and that it will share further information at a later stage. It’s been almost three years since then and the only thing we got is “we are still working on it“.
It’s also worth noting that the developers of the first Dead Island, Techland, are the ones behind the Dying Light series. Dying Light was way better than Dead Island so it will be interesting to see whether the team responsible for Dead Island 2 will be able to surpass its predecessor and Techland’s upcoming Dying Light 2.

This game is officially in development hell.
Dying light 2 will come out before they release Dead Island 2 and from what we’ve seen of DL2, it’s going to be great (provided you’re a zombie fan). DI2 better bring their A game if they want a people to buy their product.
Huh. I thought it was Yager something that was developping. What has Sumo Digital done that is worthy of lately ?
A deep story and character development wasn’t what made the first dead island fun. It was the boom and slash…
The dying light devs split off pretty early when Dead island was in development. It is most certainly a better game, but again, are you actually going to sit there and tell me that it had a deep story and character development.
I’ll give you a hint. I played over 100 hours and I can’t remember the main character’s name…
Beliavable? Thought provoking? Which part. The spiderman zombie slayers or the car slinging hulk monsters. Or maybe you mean the wannabe Vaas ripoff who’s name I also can’t remember? LUL
Rubbish Techland Developed Dying Light, after completing Dead Island, and Dead Island: Riptide, and they actually starting work on Dead Island 2.
Dead Island 2, was revealed at E3 2014. It was originally set for a 2016 release; however, Sumo Digital took over development in March 2016.
Only then did Techland start making Dying Light, they made all three games released. Check who the dev studio is, only Techland.
THEY develop crackdown 3 and i will play it because i play all action games!
I agree. We have so many dope Zombie games in the pipe or have been released and more are coming. Having said that the good news is they are sort of forced to make Dead Island 2 own(or be really good) since there are so many high quality Zombie games now and the bar has been raised pretty high.
To me it is a win win for us, I don’t care when it comes out as long as it owns. Dying light 2 is going to be insane! my body is ready.
Not sure why you would ever give a game to Sumo Digital.
I think the results will be the same like overkill the walking dead…just average
