NIS America and Nihon Falcom have released the first beta patch for the PC version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA. As the companies noted, this is a preview of the fixes that the developers are working on, and is not as stable as the default branch (meaning that players may experience some crashes).
According to the release notes, this preview beta branch contains shader optimizations, Joystick input improvements, addresses the resolution list display bug and fixes the dinput8.dll crashes.
The development team is also looking into fixing the crashes relating to Threading, various controller issues (Joystick input), the internal Rendering Resolution issue, some flickering issues in Eroded Valley & Towering Coral Forest, irregular shadows, text errors and a bug that causes conversation to scroll unusually fast when using Stun Gong in Intercept Battles.
In order to access the preview beta branch, you’ll have to follow this guide:
- From your Steam Library, right click on Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA and select “Properties”
- Go to the “BETAS” tab
- Select the “preview” beta from the dropdown menu. This should start installing the beta version of Ys VIII (no password required)

Hopefully NISA goes out of business after this. NISA are a white DNA stain on the fabric of gaming and needs to be bleached away!
I’m 35 hours in and currently playing on the preview branch. I recommend staying away from this game until crashes related to threading and flickering in some dungeons are fixed. The developer is pushing patches quite quickly so hopefully it doesn’t take long. There are work-arounds to the crashes, however not what paying customers should have to do.
I also have quality issues with the game. Shadows and DOF effect are low resolution, also internal resolution is fixed to 1800p. I ended up hex editing the internal resolution to 6k, forced AF 16x, disabled FXAA, disable DOF to make it look good. I also turned off mapped shadows to prevent random crashes. There is also mention that forcing affinity to a single core prevents crashing.

Nier has the same bug with certain graphics cards.
Maybe the console version only uses 1 core?
The usual terrible Japanese development/porting standards then.
This time NISA is at fault, it’s an American company and it’s infamous for technical problems and poor translations. Falcom fans have been bracing for this disaster ever since the partnership with NISA was announced.
I asked for a refund Friday. This mess of a port will take months to get properly fixed. I have no hope for Disgaea 5.
9 days of “fixing bugs” and NISA still haven’t addressed the main problems. The fact that the game crashes when more than 1 CPU core is used, and the “Slight” flickering issue which in reality is so severe it needs to come with it’s own epilepsy warning!
