The Deus Ex franchise has not been put on ice, it’s a very important franchise for Square Enix

A few hours ago, we informed you about the sales of Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. In that very same interview, though, Square Enix’s CEO Yosuke Matsuda talked a bit about the Deus Ex franchise. As Matsuda claimed, the franchise has not been put on ice, despite all the rumours flying around.

We have never said anything about discontinuing that title‘ said Matsuda and continued.

“What I can say is Eidos Montreal has always developed Deus Ex, and the issue is we do not have limitless resources. We have several big titles that we work with and that’s partly a factor in what our line-up looks like. Of course, it would be ideal if we could work on all of them all of the time, but the fact of the matter is some titles have to wait their turn. The reason there isn’t a Deus Ex right now is just a product of our development line-up because there are other titles we are working on.”

Matsuda concluded that Deus Ex is a very important franchise for Square Enix. So, perhaps we’ll see a new game once Eidos Montreal finishes working on its Marvel game? One can hope.

Square Enix is already internally discussing and exploring what it wants to do with the next instalment of Deus Ex. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether the next game will pick up where Mankind Divided ended.

It will also be interesting to see whether Square Enix will try, once again, to butcher the entire game. Mankind Divided suffered from some ridiculous choices/decisions. The game had some of the worst pre-order offerings, and – according to reports – its story was cut in half. While its gameplay was better, the overall product felt less appealing and satisfying than Human Revolution. And that says a lot!

  1. So he basically confirmed that it is on hold. Given that Marvel properties are hot right now it’s a no brainer to assume that SQuenix would want to milk this cash cow as much as possible leaving Deus Ex not just on the backburner but basically outside the kitchen altogether.

If the next one were to pick up right after the last one left off (because the game has not been ended properly) it would be too little too late. Despite obvious talent involved (that soundtrack is something else) the fact that you don’t want to get back to the game that praises itself on multiple choices says a lot.

  2. If it’s not on ice yet, they should do it, mankind divided was such a garbage in pretty much anything, human revolution was alright, but nothing special, should’ve ended it there, or take their time.

      1. I think it’s clear what “on ice” mean.
And if you don’t know, reading the article would probably make you realize what it means, it’s not rocket sience, english is a pretty simple language.

          1. On ice means pretty much on hold, frozen, so he said the series isn’t on hold, or put aside, so what are you talking about?

‘We have never said anything about discontinuing that title‘ said Matsuda and continued.

          2. On ice =/= discontinued. They’re not currently developing a new Deus Ex, therefore it’s on ice.

          3. On ice means it’s frozen, and it’s not on ice, the fact they’re not currently working on it doesn’t mean it’s on hold, it’s just that they’re working on other titles, as he specifies in his speech. When a title is on hold, it means they have no ideas and no reason to make it move forward, note that i’m not saying something new will come out, i cannot know that, i’m just analyzing the guy’s words, and from them, the saga hasn’t been put on hold, unfortunately.

          4. No offense, but you’re literally spelling out the definition of on ice. They’re not working on Deus Ex because they’ve stopped to work on other titles. The plans for the series are on hold / on ice. Not really sure how you’d think the opposite.

          5. Because what he said is different!

The reason there isn’t a Deus Ex right now is just a product of our
development line-up because there are other titles we are working on.”

          6. If you say so…There’s another bunch of people here that understood that correctly, including the article writer, and not only from DSOG, so keep believing what you want.

          7. I do think you may want to look up the definition as: “The reason there isn’t a Deus Ex right now is just a product of our development line-up because there are other titles we are working on.” tallies up veeeeeery nicely with “on ice (especially of a plan or proposal) held in reserve for future consideration.”

          8. I’m not reading among the lines here, i’m just saying that what he said tells us nothing about putting the series “on ice”, but then, as i already said, i don’t know what he actually thinks. I’m just basing my argument on what came out of his mouth and what i read on this and other articles (since it’s what you contested, remember?).

So for the last time, if the game isn’t being worked on, doesn’t mean it’s on ice.

          9. I’m only really contesting the headline doesn’t make sense, and that you don’t know what ‘on ice’ means. There’s not really anything to read between the lines in terms of what Matsuda says, they’re just too busy for a new Deus Ex, so they’ll take a look at a later date.

          10. Basically every commenter, the article writers of multiple websites, i don’t know which planet you live on, but looks like you’re alone on it man.
            It’s been a pleasure.

          11. Not that you need my confirmation, but you are quite correct. On ice is synonymous with ‘On Hold’. if he had said that he ‘iced’ the project, that would mean buried. Perhaps the miscommunication is down to the original source using English as a second language and thus maybe the nuance of the phrase escaped him on this occasion… that said not sure what everyone else’ excuse is 🙂

          12. I don’t know why I bit repeatedly but yeah, it seemed pretty clear from the original story that the franchise hadn’t been killed off permanently (that would just be daft).

          13. On hold doesn’t mean buried, it means it’s currently not the main focus, so again, i think you’ve got the term pretty wrong.

But hey at least he’s not alone on that planet.

          14. You’re right i misread your post. Anyway, on hold or ice doesn’t mean the saga is dead or anything our friend here says.

          15. And why would their “lineup” focus on other games, if Deus Ex is important and profitable for them? It wouldn’t be. If Activision weren’t making a COD game right now or EA weren’t making a FIFA game then those franchises would be on ice, frozen, discontinued. The fact that Squenix MAY make another Deus Ex at some future point is irrelevant. That’s true for any franchise that ended a long time ago. You could say that about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. You could say, oh, that franchise is not on ice, they’re just developing different games right now, it’s just a scheduling thing. Actually though, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is finished. And so is Deus Ex. Both may be revived in the future and probably will be. So what.

          16. You’re missing my point, i’m not arguing whether that matsuda guy said is true or not, i’m just arguing that if the translation is right, using the term “On ice” is correct, and makes sense, which is what Jon Sutton was contesting, that’s it.

          17. That i don’t know, could be, i actually hope since MD is absolute garbage, it’s basically sh**ting on the original game, for me the only thing they share is the name, and it’s already way too much.

  3. Don’t believe em. If it were true, they’d have denied it a year ago when the franchise’s cancellation was making headlines left right and center. Squeenix just wants to keep it locked away in their IP vault in case they decide to do something with it in a decade or 2, just like with Thief.

  4. at least they have better option to protect the future titles like ffxv,dx,tr thanks to denuvo and vmprotect they will not have to worry about putting it to ice

    1. ROFL Jesus….please tell me you have brain damage. I will at least understand why you just types this drivel if you do. Otherwise, my god, do I ever feel sorry for you.

  5. Probably a good thing. I like Deus Ex games going all the way back to the original but if they churn them out too quickly people will just get burnt out on them and then they could get put on ice permanently.

    1. Doubt it. If it “comes back” now, chances are it’ll be as a reboot, so we’re basically f*cked as it’ll be a joke.

  6. The Deus Ex franchise has not been put on ice, instead it has been put on our patented NOT-Ice, a new kind of cold, solid water that differs from ice insofar as, we don’t call it that.

  7. They need to just bring Deus Ex back to its roots in World War 2, make it a free-to-play multiplayer-only FPS and litter it with cosmetics loot boxes and microtransactions. It’s literally the only way to save this dying franchise.

      1. “And then make it a subscription service. Games are not games anymore, they are services.”

Got some laughs out this one. Games stopped being games about 15 years ago, when they became “experiences”. Now games aren’t experiences anymore, they are “services”.

I wonder what marketing bulls**t they will be after “services” isn’t the best money sucking definition for them.

        1. To be fair being experiences only enhanced games as a form of entertainment… Take the forgotten Silent Hill games by Team Silent. Those are definitely experiences. Those which even gave birth to a completely new branch of the survival horror genre, and there is still nothing like them.

Being services does not do that. If anything it turns games and gaming as a whole into a mundane entertainment procedure… Like turning on the TV for background noise. You are not sure you need it, you are not sure it’ll result in you watching anything worthwhile, but seeing how you have nothing better to do…

  8. Right. It was so important that you purposely f**ked it in the a** with greedy bulls**t marketing.

Does anyone out there actually believe PR BS from these idiots? lol Good for some laughs at least.

Of all companies out there in gaming, why did this have to end up in “EA Japan’s” hands?

  9. Mankind divided didn’t feel like it had an ending and if it did it was way to rushed. To think it was 8$ and i bought it day one for 60$.

Hey still better then a lot of other games that our popular now a days.
