The Steam version of BLUE REFLECTION will render 2D images at 720p, “we hope you will accept this”

KOEI Tecmo has stated that the Steam version of BLUE REFLECTION will render images at 1280×720. Now while the external resolution will be unlocked, KOEI Tecmo confirmed that the images will be stretched once PC gamers choose a higher resolution (which will obviously result in blurry visuals).

As KOEI Tecmo claimed when a customer asked about the game’s quality:

“We prepare 2D images basically on the resolution of 1280*720 for BLUE REFLECTION Steam version, meanwhile 1920*1080 for PS4 version.

Therefore, if you play in the environment where the resolution is larger than 1280*720, the images are shown as stretched. We hope you will accept this.”

So while the PS4 version will feature 1920×1080 2D images, KOEI Tecmo will not be using those ones for the Steam version. Nice one KOEI Tecmo, that’s a really clever move.

KOEI Tecmo concluded that it will consider conforming 2D images to a larger resolution, though it cannot make any promises at this stage.

      1. Oh, sorry. Didn’t know that. Graphic and performance-wise it runs okay. Never had any issue using a Xbox One controller.

So basically KOEI Tecmo doesn’t want PC gamers to buy their game? Guess not.

    1. Die hards will buy it in droves anyway. People forgive them and bamco too easily when it comes to Japanese games, those fans are seriously thirsty af, that they are willing to take any garbage on board.

      1. The second part of your post is absolutely correct, but Koei Tecmo’s diehard fanatics are significantly smaller when you take a look at the Steamspy numbers.

        1. Oh they are definitely smaller, but enough to allow thei games to review quite well, despite all the downgrades and technical faults.

Same for bamco games. Pirate Warriors 3 is inferior to the PS4 version in every way, with technical faults of it’s own and half the option menu not even doing anything, yet that game still scored well and fans think it’s A-OK, while I think it’s utter garbage since all I wanted was the PS4 version with an options menu on PC, but I couldn’t even get that.

  2. Guessing by 2D images they mean stuff like UI.

Sonic Lost World did this too, but that was because the 720p UI elements from the Wii U version was the best there was (so you had a choice between blurry UI or unlegibly small UI and SEGA chose the former).

Here they clearly have the means to display it though, and it sounds like they are catering to low end machines in place of implementing variable render resolution/scaling for the UI.

    1. They could’ve rendered the UI on top of the gameplay on a separate layer so that it can be scaled independent of the rest of the graphics. This is a common practice.

      1. Yeah, that is exactly what they should have done. It sounds me like dealing with variable resolutions was such an afterthought that they quite literally put no thought into how it would work, and then realised they needed a strategy too late (I’m guessing Koei Tecmo isn’t giving devs any time or budget to actually work on a PC version).

    1. Is this game on the Vita?

If so it means they’re porting the Vita version instead of the PS4 one, they do that a lot.

I have a theory as to why this might be: Kekmo is so laughably bad at porting that their PS4 ports tend to have performance issues, so instead they port Vita versions that run smooth on most PCs without having to optimize anything.

      1. Yes, its on the Vita as well
And that atually makes sense, Blue Reflection runs awfully bad on the PS4 so that might actually be the case.

  3. So… you’re investing money to make the quality worse on a more powerful platform?

Do they really think this kind of console_war_thinking gets a pass on the PC?

  4. not that i care about weeabo garbage but 720P port just screams laziness
i thought steam was the prefered platform for Japanese games not BS4?

  5. So what in these quotes articulates KOEI’s reasoning?

They’ve stated clearly that 1080p base resolution for 2D images is already assured for the PS4, yet by some miracle really PC gets stuck with 720p assets for these images? Isn’t the game’s development environment originally PC then “downscaled” if you will to the consoles?

I know, many questions, but making a statement like this is bloody ridiculous. Getting your act together would be advised KOEI, even drop a Day One patch if you must to get rid of this glaring oversight.

  6. This site is absolutely wonderful for any PC Gamer. Keep up the excellent work and keep informing us of these misguided missteps by developers.
