Quantum Break – New PC Patch Live – Includes Options To Disable Upscaling & Film Grain

Remedy has released a new patch for the PC version of Quantum Break. This patch is 27GB in size and no, we are not joking. While Remedy has not revealed its release notes as of yet, we can confirm that the team has implemented an option to disable the game’s upscaling tech that was also used in its Xbox One version. Hell bloody yeah.

Now the bad news is that this option comes with a performance hit. Reports suggest that there is a 20fps performance hit by simply disabling the game’s reconstruction tech (that is referred as “Upscaling”).

So yeah, this patch will not magically make Quantum Break perform better on your machine. Still, it’s amazing that Remedy listened to its fanbase and added this option.

Furthermore, this patch adds an “Exit” button and an option to disable Film Grain.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, Remedy has fixed the Gsync issues that plagued this title.

We’ll be sure to update this post with the release notes once we get our hands on them!

UPDATE:

Here are the release notes:

27 GB patch. Holy mother of God that is a new world record for sure. That exit button DLC sure is very big.

    • Amiga 4000

New quit button + all new graphics engine without reconstruction. Maybe all new textures without “grain”.

      • Jonathan Russell

        Whoa!!! A quit button!?!?!?

        Colour me impressed.

        • Amiga 4000

For me best option: disable temporal reconstruction. My GTX 980 is in heaven. I think this game have best graphics I ever seen on PC. All I want to new Polarion GPU to run this game in 4K 60fps with all graphics options enabled 🙂

          • FasterThanFTL

Polaris is a mainstream card. Vega is what you will be needing for 4k/60fps in Quantum Break.

          • Amiga 4000

I wait for GTX 1080. I hope that it will be at least 50-60% faster than my current 980. Its 14nm instead od 28nm. Probably with working DX12 asyc shaders. Can’t wait 🙂

PS: My mistake. GTX 1080 is “Pascal”

          • FasterThanFTL

Get 1080 Ti instead. It will be around twice as fast as the GTX 980 and probably have 12 GB VRAM.

          • Psionicinversion

youll be waiting till end of the year/2017 for the Ti version

          • Maxim Pawleen

+ most probably HBM2. Waiting for a Ti or Titan is always a good call of you have the dough. But if you don’t, going from 1080 to 980, the performance difference is going to be like 10-20% maximum, my 2 cents.

          • Moravid

GTX 1080 won’t be 50-60% faster, it will be on 16nm (not 14nm) and will lack async shaders, though nVidia will have their own solution to that.

      • Primey

Film grain is a post process. They didn’t add grain to the original textures.

        • Loup Blanc

Probably more related to the engine render being massively modified.
Does the game really take nearly 100GB after this patch ? Heavier game of the world ?

          • Olek

You didn’t think that this is replacing files rather than adding them..
Also, White Wolf sounds extremely lame and effeminate en Français.

          • Loup Blanc

What i think is that protecting the windows app folder prevent you from seeing how much place your app/games weight on your drive.

I might not know how updates work, but i know we have access to previous and new options together. So maybe they didn’t replace all files but add new one (or bigger one)

          • Olek

            >I might not know how updates work

Then why are we having this conversation?

          • Loup Blanc

You don’t have to answer to people you don’t want to talk to you know. If you know exactly what the tile update has done, fine for you.
I am pretty sure you don’t even have access to the windows app folder or doesn’t even own the game.

Well, i might ignore you in the future.

          • Primey

No. That’s not how updates work.

      • Quakecore89

        Totally worth the download. 😀

    • Wahid

      God hasn’t mother

  • Colin Harvey

Holy crap 27 GB patch! Guessing they had to rewrite a substantial amount of code and how and which textures are called. Still for fixes to gsync and adding a damn exit button its worth it to me. Good thing I gotta make a 3 hr road trip here in a min. Will give a report on my performance when I get back. Before was avg 70 fps at 1440p but of course that was with thier dynamic upscaling or whatever the heck it was doing.

    sli 980’s
    i5-4690k
    16gb

    • BACE

You’re getting 70 fps at 1440p with a 980 ? The game doesn’t support SLI/CF so it must be one 980 working, what are your settings other than resolution ? this might be a deciding factor for me about buying it because I heard it’s pretty bad on Nvidia cards. I also have SLI 980, 16 GB but i7 5280K.

      Thanks.

      • Colin Harvey

Yeah definitely not supporting sli, currently running 364.96 (beta) drivers because I had heard there was a marked improvement. Unfortunately I can’t say what I was getting before as it took me freaking forever to find an fps overlay that worked (eventually found dxtory worked for fps overlay)

The game actually showed in the nvidia geforce experience so I used the recommended setting there.
        Which are:
        SSAO: On
        Screen Space Reflections: Medium
        Shadow Filtering: High
        Shadow Resolution: Medium
        Texture Resolution: Medium
        Volumetric lighting: Medium
        Effects quality: High
        Global Illumination: High
        1440 p

Now with those settings it was averaging between 73-78 fps. I heard that people with only 60 hz monitors where being capped at 50, (5/6ths total refresh) but I have a 144hz monitor which would put the theoritical cap at 121fps, but never got that high obviously. This was all prepatch mind you, still need to get around to running some benches post patch to see if there is any more improvement allowing to crank some other settings higher. But honestly to me the game looks fine, and plays smooth which is all I really cared about any way in terms of performance. Would it be nice to have sli working of course, but so far I can say the performance and looks don’t get in the way of enjoying a rather novel game. I really like the different way time is used, not just slowing things down, but hunting out memories, creating temporal bubbles to both slow or speed things up, concentrating areas of space time, all fun stuff. But that my 2 cents at least

        • Olek

          Who cares about Medium settings.

        • sasuke256

damn, 980 Ti for medium settings.. god.. god !!!

          • Colin Harvey

            A couple things.
First I have sli 980’s not 980 ti’s and second don’t read too much into what the name of setting is, better to see the fidelity that setting provides. For example when Gears of War UE first dropped, they offered Low Med and High texture settings for pc. But…

            Low – 1080p res textures
            Med – 1440p
            High – 4K

So in that case, if someone with 970’s said they could only get smooth performance on low textures that wouldn’t mean the game didn’t look better that 90% of the other games on thier “Ultra” settings. A name is just a name, its what actually comes out that counts. Now I’ll have you Gears of War UE did decide to change their texture settings to offer 4 levels to provide more choice and nuance. But getting caught up names, is like spending $100 bucks extra on a guitar amp that goes to 11 because the other ones only go to 10

        • BACE

Thanks for the detailed analysis. So you’re getting decent performance at those settings, it’s quite good for single 980. Unfortunately I still have a 60 Hz monitor so I will be stuck with 50 fps but locked 50 fps is still better than 30 fps so it’s certainly playable for me.

Whenever you get time, please tell me about the post patch performance also.

          Thanks.

      • WrATH

It runs fine on a 980 TI, it’s only 10% behind a FuryX in this game.

        • BACE

980 Ti is quite strong compared to a single 980 and I can’t find any 980 videos on Youtube except the ones coming from DudeRandom and he usually do videos on max settings so I am interested in seeing what a single 980 can do at different settings, I was really excited for this game but UWP and missing of SLI/CF killed it for me. If it’s getting any better then I’ll buy it.

  • 27GB patch from the terrible Windows Store? It might take a year to download.

    • M. Hoskins

It is. I got a gig and a half, then it pretty much quit. Whee!

  • Maxim Pawleen

They listened to their customers and pc fan base. Other devs should take a page from their book. They still have some work to do though.

    • Sun Streaker

Other devs have done this before Remedy, they aren’t the only devs in the world to listen to PC fans nor is the game the most perfect in the book on PC either.

      • Maxim Pawleen

I know but a bunch of devs wouldn’t have done that. I was talking aboutthem. And yes it is not the best but that wasn’t my point.

        • Sun Streaker

Your point was wanting other devs to take note what Remedy did with their broken mess, other devs also do this with their own broken mess, those that don’t are publishers like WB who have too much money and other bases of income to not give a damn about PC, MS on the other hand absolutely cannot afford to royally and forever screw up their PC relations and Remedy can’t afford to lose that base either which leads to their fixes being the absolute must default of an action to take up on.

          • Maxim Pawleen

Lol i had WB in mind. You caught me. I was about to use Batman AK and MKX as examples.

    • (.)(.)

No, they shouldve done this from the start. Why say it would be too much effort to implement, then go ahead and do it?

All those refunds must of got too much.

    • Loup Blanc

Well their first answer was anyway the most disappointing “no we can’t fix the temporal reconstruction”, yet they done it in less than a month.
      So why lie first ?

They could have wait 1 month before releasing to PC, until the game is really ready.

  • SincereGhost

For some comparison Remedy’s last 2 games Alan Wake and Alan Wakes American nightmare combine for a total size of 13.3GB edit:(none the less its good that they did this thx for listening Remedy)

  • I’m downloading it now. It first downloaded like 42MB but the 27GB thing looks like it’s not a real download but some sort of unpacking of the original files. It sure goes faster than my internet is able to download.

Also, my HDD light is on fire!

  • Geop0p3

What does reconstruction tech do exactly?

    • Amiga 4000

With reconstruction game render with 66% of native resolution. Take 4 last frames and check direction of movement of each pixel. Reconstruct full frame with native resolution with MSAAx4 and information about pixel movements

      Short version: native 1920×1080 i reconstructed from 4 frames 1280×720 with MSAAx4

    • FasterThanFTL

It renders the game at a lower resolution than the one you selected, thus reducing image quality but increasing performance. For example if you select 1080p the game with actually render at 720p. It is the opposite of downsampling tech like DSR and VSR.

      • Amiga 4000

Its not simple “upscaling” from lower resolution to higher. In temporal reconstruction you take last 4 frames and check direction of movement for each pixel. So in 5-th frame you can predict correct position of pixel in higher resolution. It have better image quality than upscaling but with “ghosting effect” on some objects.

  • Amir

In other news: CA has removed Chaos pre-order crap from Totalwar: Warhammer. it’s now free for everyone who buys the game in it’s first week, however that s**ty DRM still stands which still is a no buy for me.

  • Uzytkownik4321

How about VSync? Can you finally disable that, too?

    • Primey

Microsoft is fixing it. Should be fixed in the May Windows Update

      • Amir

        lol, wow stupid corporate slave.

        • Primey

          Go away you low life

          • Amir

            shut up degenerate a**hole.

  • Kyle Jackson

That’s bigger than most games. Why a game that needs a 27gb patch, that has then been released, is beyond me. This is the weirdest industry to grace this planet so far, it needs to change.

  • Gene

LOL. A 980TI can’t run this game in 1080p at 60? Even without the AA?

  • blackjohn

    A 27gb patch? What a debacle…

  • William Fenton

It seems to my limited tech knowledge that upscaling off is not quite what it says, as there is still ghosting present and MSAA x4. Can someone who knows better confirm my suspicions that in fact all it does it upscale FROM the set resolution (so in effect a DSR of +1/3), as opposed to UP to the set resolution.

  • Rob Hatfield

can we disable windows 10 too

  • Primey

The large size is because the Windows 10 store doesn’t support diff patching like Steam does

  • mohmed ahmed helal

windows store opens for a 2 sec. and then closed whyyyyy

  • It’s not a 27 Go patch, the Windows Store shows the size of the whole game download, even when it’s only a patch. Patch could be only 1 Go, it will be written 27 Go.

  • TonyPT

I’m still having the issue of not been able to change the storage drive, despite of every trick I tried online . Maybe some day…

  • SHREDDER OROKUSAKI

So mow we can play in real 1080p?

  • SaberEdge

It’s good they fixed the reconstruction crap. That really has no business being in a PC game.

  • Maxim Pawleen

    Hello,

Could somebody explain me this ?

“Remedy has fixed the gsync issue”

I thought all the UWP games, for now, couldn’t use gsync/freesync… I don’t get it ?

  • Agent Smith

Ok so I have 2 questions:
    1) Is my Nvidia Half-Refresh rate V-sync going to work now?
    2) Is 60 frames now posible?
And finally.. can someone smart find a .ini file or something so we can put
    the Msaa 4x off and add a simple Fxaa/Smaa? PLEASE? :d ..

  • Quakecore89

    …..NO! NO! (shakes my head)
