Unity 6 Time Ghost Tech Demo

Unity shows what’s possible in Unity 6 with the Time Ghost Demo

Unity has shared a new tech demo that showcases what’s possible in the latest version of the Unity 6 Engine, called Time Ghost. This demo features spectacular visuals and graphics. So, be sure to check it out.

My only gripe with this tech demo is the character animations. For whatever reason, the humans run and walk like robots. Their movement does not feel natural. At least in my eyes. And no, these animations do not come close to what we’ve seen even in commercial triple-A games.

Other than that, the Time Ghost Tech Demo looks incredible. Unity 6 will also have a new hair rendering that looks amazing. The hair showcased here is by far the best I’ve seen. The environments also look stunning. Not only that but it appears Unity made major improvements to the LOD system. It’s not up to what UE5 does with Nanite. However, it’s still better than what we saw in Unity 5.

The developers said the demo uses the newest upgrades in HDRP, better lighting with APVs, Scenario Blending, and Smoke Lighting. It also runs faster thanks to improvements like the GPU Resident Drawer.

Not only that but Unity used machine learning for cloth deformation. The ML model was trained with 2,000 frames of vertex animation, something that reduced the data from 2.5GB to a 47MB model. This allows for deformations in just 0.8 ms per frame.

For those wondering, this tech demo is not available for download. My guess is that we might get it in the future. After all, Unity has released almost all of its previous tech demos. For instance, in 2022, the team released the Enemies Tech Demo. Then, in January 2020, Unity released the full-length version of its The Heretic tech demo. In March 2019 we go the Unity Engine Megacity tech demo. And in 2018 we got the Unity Engine ADAM Tech Demo.

Now while the tech demo looks top-notch, I’m not sure whether game devs will be able to come close to it. I mean, we haven’t even seen a Unity-powered game looking as good as the previous tech demos. Remember Heretic? Yeah, no Unity game looks as good as it. And that tech demo was from 2020.

Finally, Unity will launch Unity 6 on October 17th.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

          1. Bro fat girls look like whales already, you fist their a*s and it’s going to look like a hippo’s an*s.
People who have fisting f*tish are on par with people who get off to eating t*rd.

          1. It's not just a matter of having time. For me, sausage fight is just repulsive to look at.
There's a user here that goes by the name "fnd", he's an expert in this regard.

          2. F*k that guy! Erm I meant don't f*k that guy! 2024 is so confusing, it's something they are putting in the water.

      1. Just show ultra realistic game like unreal engine where most of games come from unity like 2D .2.5D or game which runs on switch

    1. I don't know, the more gay friendly a country is, the less displays of affection between male friends, so it may be the case your country was ruined with gay crap.

  1. Keep in mind that similar to UE5, Unity will also increasingly get used in the CGI/VFX industry.

That's why Unity bought Weta Digital (now renamed to WetaFX) in the first place.

And the CGI/VFX industry is another reason why they keep the native Linux version around, too.

    1. The sound of his breathing and structure of the character model suggest that this is a dude. Otherwise it's a very flat woman with masculine voice.

  2. This is 2024.
We have realistic graphics since 20 years already. (Half-Life 2. Yes, just my opinion, man.)

How about we showcase interesting features that can actually improve the gameplay, like physics (okay, the hair looks good, big deal), interactions, procedural generation, anything related to AI, etc?

As an older gamer, I just couldn't care less about such videos anymore.
    Absolutely nothing interesting to see.
Yeah, Unity 6 looks good. Yawn. Moving on.

    1. That's exactly what i think

Is the final goal of a next-gen game engine the ability to have a game that looks like a movie ? Is a good game a game that uses codes of movies now ( camera positioning, grain, colorimetry ) or a game that use ingenious gameplay tricks ?

This trailer seems to be more oriented to movie producer than to gamers in my opinion.

    2. I feel the same.

I've just been playing Portal 2 on the Switch and it looks great, but it made me realise what a brick wall we have hit in terms of graphics the last decade.

My wife commented that it looked better than the recent Still Wakes the Deep even with its UE5 bells and whistles (which just look like vaseline smeared across the screen to me).

    3. Since you mentioned it, I always think that 2004 is the year when "you didn't have to try to guess what the hell things were" regarding 3D graphics, taking Half Life 2 and Far Cry (and somewhat less Doom 3) as a milestone. But besides that…

Yes, these graphics don't excite anymore, they just show prospective customers that they might be up to Unreal Engine and custom engines, but not much more. IMO they'd much better do a trailer with quick engine features showcase, over just graphics trying to wow anyone.

  3. It's a tech demo. Custom features that won't exist in engine. Just like every time they release one of these dumb things.
unity has been in a half broken or incomplete state for years
