Capcom has just released Street Fighter 6 on current-gen platforms. Powered by the RE Engine, SF6 pushes next-gen graphics and looks miles better than its predecessor.
Yesterday, YouTube’s ‘Cycu1’ and ‘ElAnalistaDeBits’ shared the following comparison videos. In the first video, we get a direct comparison between the 3D models of Street Fighter 5 and Street Fighter 6. And as we can see, the improvements are huge.
Everything, and I mean everything, looks better in SF6. The lighting is better, the skin shading is better, the shadows are more defined, and the 3D models have more polygons. Hell, there are even some cool clothes physics. And yes, the hair of all main characters looks significantly better than in SF5.
Seriously, look at Ken. Okay okay, it’s a shame that we won’t have any more “banana” memes, but his SF6 model looks soooooooooo good. And don’t get me started with Cammy.
Overall, this is exactly what a “next-gen” game should look like. And I’m using these quotes because all of the latest current-gen games do not feel like “next-gen” titles. I’m also worried about Tekken 8 as its latest trailers are nowhere close to its reveal trailer. Since I’m a die-hard Tekken fan, I’ll be there day-1 (my boy Hwoarang will be in T8 so yay). Still, and while the 3D character models in T8 look amazing, its lighting and shadows feel old-gen-ish right now.

Interesting. My first thought was that it looked about as good as tekken on last gen. Perhaps I’m mistaken there. Regardless, hard to call this ‘next gen’ when it is in fact a cross gen title.
I prefer the crisp artsyle of Guilty Gear Series over SF 6 . Guilty gear will be timeless while this will age !

Imo visually speaking I think the pinnacle was 3rd strike, those fluid sprite animations were top. Imagine they remade those sprites in 4k.
Indeed, SF3:3S was something else. For SF7, if they switch to a high fidelity cel-shaded art style and raised the frame rate to 120FPS they might be able to emulate that level of fluidity.
I’m guessing it still looks pretty good via emulation when upscaled and using integer scaling plus one of the many excellent quality CRT shaders that have been produced in recent times?
I don’t play fighting games anymore but could fire up RetoArch and give it a shot. Although not a fan of sharp pixelated sprites, my shader of choice is ScaleFX with scanlines.
exactly, this is a 2D game. They could’ve done something similar to dragon ball fighterz. Make it look like it’s hard drawn but it’s 3D. SF3 sprite animations look almost rotoscoped. They’re so beautiful.

Tbh SFIV and V looked simplistic and dated when they came out, partly due to the style they were going for, but I always thought they looked bad.
