  1. I never played the baldurs gate games before, should I play those first so I can get a feel if PoE?

    1. You should play Baldur’s Gate games just because they are great. But in Bioware games there is usually some Great Evil, some Big Evil Guy who needs to be destroyed for the Greater Good.

Obsidian games are different. Much more shades of gray. Much more depth in characters. Many people just don’t see it. Kreia, Ammon Jerro, Mr. House – one of the best characters I’ve seen in videogaming.

      1. I think KOTOR and Fallout 3 were both clearly better than their sequels that Obsidian made, they were given the right ingredients but couldn’t capture the same feeling to the games.

        1. That’s why I said “many people just don’t see it”. I won’t say anything bad about KotOR 1, I really like this game, BUT KotOR 2 is still better.

Why? Well, I want to quote HK-47 on Malak (main antagonist in KotOR 1): “His meatbag apprentice was more like an angry club.” KotOR 1 is really simple in terms of good/evil sides.

KotOR 2 on the other hand is much more complicated and mature. So much depth in main characters. Sith lords are not just another evil jedis, and main protagonist is not just another good jedi knight. It is Star Wars as it meant to be.

Final fight with Darth Sion is really shows everything. He can’t die because he uses Force to rebuild his body over and over again, and you need to convince him to give up his power.

You won’t find something like this in KotOR 1 or any other Bioware game.

          1. I have both games installed so maybe I should play them through again like the 5th time, it’s been over 2 years since last time already.

          2. Didn’t know about that, haven’t played the game on PC yet. Thanks for the info.

          3. moddb/com/mods/the-sith-lords-restored-content-mod-tslrcm/download

They were patched not so long ago (March 14 2014).

TSLRCM first was released in 2009. Includes lots of content and HK factory plant.

M4-78EP was released later, and includes the droid planet. Can’t say that I really liked it. It doesn’t have that level of quality as the rest of the game. Unlike TSLRCM, there was not much to restore (Obsidian cut it out because LucasArts rushed them), so major part of this was re-done, and voiced by the modders.

But I think it’s worth to see it, because it’s still a part of the game.

        2. As for New Vegas, it perfectly captured the spirit of Fallout 2, while Fallout 3 was more like Oblivion_with_guns.

          Just simple facts.

          1. Plot was much better with dozens of endings and again, without good/evil sides, while Fallout 3 had just one ending (RPG, lol), which they sold later in Broken Steel.
          2. DLC were much better, but not only that, they were linked in the main plot.
          3. Lots of interesting companions and characters. You won’t see anyone so charismatic as Mr. House or Ulysses in Fallout 3.
          4. Lots of gameplay improvements (repair kits, ironsight, new armor/weapon wear system).
          5. Many times bigger than F3.

I really don’t know how F3 can be better.

          1. 1. I don’t really care about the whole main quest things in bethesda games, I have 200 hours on Skyrim and the main story is like max 10h from that?
            2. Bought the Broken Steel DLC, can’t say anything about the others.
            3. I dislike companions, I play stealthy and want to wander alone. Having some NPC’s running around me(except ED-E maybe) ruins the immersion of me being a lone wanderer in the wasteland.
            4. Gameplay improvements, very true.
            5. Mm not that much? I found FO3’s world more interesting, also the scenery was nicer.

I can’t explain why FO3 would be better, it just feels that to me. Gameplay wise NV is better though. I think it’s simply the setting, atmosphere etc that made FO3 so good. I go visit megaton once in a while for nostalgia but I don’t have the same thing for good springs in NV. NV doesn’t feel so real to me, the whole factions thing is little ridiculous and the vegas town itself is somewhat lame.

          2. 1. Unlike Skyrim, Oblivion or F3, in New Vegas there are a LOT of things that will affect the main quest and the ending. For example, you need to choose who you want to support in New Vegas and it’s about 5-15 hours of quests; If you make friends with the Remnants/BoS, they will help you in the end (another 5-15 hours), etc etc. Overall the main quests is much much longer because of these things.

            2. And I can say a lot about them. Mothership Zeta and Anchorage is the worst DLC I’ve ever seen in videogaming. At the end of Anchorage, a CHINESE general makes a seppuku. I guess I don’t need to tell you that this ritual suicide came from Japan. This one thing can say a lot of things about Bethesda.

Just one story of Randall Clark (the survivalist in Honest Hearts DLC) beats every other storyline in F3 DLC.

            3. I also dislike companions and play stealthy, BUT in New Vegas each of them has a personal quests and some story behind it, and its also affects the ending. You can help them with their problems and then travel alone.
My favorite is Raul Tejada (BTW he’s voiced by Danny Trejo).

            5. NV + DLC are much bigger than F3 + DLC. More quests, more weapons, crafting and on the top of that, better mods.
Personally I beat F3+DLC in 70-100 hours, while NV+DLC takes for about 250 hours and it’s almost like vanilla Skyrim.

Well, to each his own, I guess. But if you would played Fallout 2, there is no way you would say that. Storyline is boring and forgettable. Lack of quests and weapons. It also lacks of classic Fallout humor. It shows the blood, gore and dismemberment in slow motion, and yet, fears the sexual themes.

          3. You are right about the main quests but I guess I was for some reasons more immersed to the ”worse” and more straight forward main guest of FO3. And like I said the main quests are almost irrelevant for the massive games they all are, imo.

After thinking I realized I played with some of the companions in NV in one playthrough and remembered the quests they all had. Actually a very nice addition.

Talk of DLC’s makes me want to get the NV ultimate edition from steam, I have played it on xbox without DLC’s so much that I wouldn’t want to play it for years. Also I realized it has ENB’s like skyrim and that could make it a whole new experience, the vanilla graphics are rather.. old.

I have tried both FO1 and 2 but they were just too old graphics and gameplay wise. I’m only 21 soon so I don’t have the same nostalgia for games that old as I didn’t play them. Also I guess it’s a possibility I lack the level of imagination and ability to be immersed to really old games that some have.

          4. Well, you can get both Fallout 3 and NV for like ~10$ (5$ each) on sales. Not much to lose even if you still won’t like it. Point Lookout and The Pit from Fallout 3 also worth it, if you didn’t played yet.

Not just ENB. Both games has a great textures packs (NMC texture pack). But overall, NV has more high quality mods than F3.

    2. what these people said + you can buy both Baldur’s Gate titles in HD, they released both of them in HD (last year) with their expansions

        1. i think so, i guess BG2 EE is 25$ on steam right now, it might go on sale in winter or check weekend sales, maybe it goes on sale on weekends.

or you can buy BG2 Complete for 9$ on GOG. it’s not Enhanced Edition but it has it’s expansion with it. sure BG2 EE has it too.

  2. it looks nice but all i can think about while watching this is how good dragon age origins was, how much better feel for the characters and combat you got from the full 3d world, models and animations. But for what this game is trying to do it looks almost perfect, don’t know what to say about what the guy was saying about them making the hud on the bottom take much more space and be full solid. I like the way, again, DA:O had it, i like a rather minimal hud and that’s one thing i did not like about old infinity engine games. But story and characters is what makes these games special and we will have to wait and see if this delivers, i think it will.
Both BG games are great, i liked 2 better, but the best RPG of all time, for me at least, is Planescape Torment. Everybody should try it, there are mods to make it run on whatever resolution you would like and it’s just a really good written masterpiece. Play it or you are not really a rpg enthusiast

  3. Looks great but one question. Are there plans to make the grass and trees animated? Seems pretty lifeless, and I understand that might not be of dire importance this late/early in making the game, just curious about it.

Also I backed Torment: Tides of Numenera and seeing Pillars now, I am a bit upset with Torments voting decision to go turn based and not RTwP. They should have put both in at that point. Whatever. I got Wasteland 1 and 2 out of my KS of T:ToN so.

    1. There was a video “pillars of eternity exterior environment update” (watch?v=aaDPStKNpKk&t=2m10s), and trees/grass actually had an animation, but I don’t see it in this gameplay video, so I really don’t what to say. Maybe you should ask on Obsidian forums.
