New features showcased for the Quake 2 HD graphical overhaul mod, q2xp

Modder ‘KirkBarnes’ has shared some of the new features that will be available in the upcoming version of q2xp. In case you did not know, q2xp is an HD graphical overhaul mod for the original version of Quake 2.

While it does not feature any Ray Tracing effects (like Quake 2 RTX), it introduces other cool features. As such, this mod is ideal for those that want to replay this classic first-person shooter.

Version 1.27.0 will feature two-sided decals and improved caustics. Moreover, it will have full dynamic lighting for trans surfaces (except water) and Vertex lighting for water and alpha surfaces. Not only that, but it will offer proper player gun collision.

In order to showcase these features, KirkBarnes shared the following videos.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. Unfortunately this mod is unplayable on most modern AMD GPUs because it’s using some antiquated OpenGL features that AMD doesn’t support anymore. When asked if he’s considering a workaround or updating to a more modern API, the developer was quite snarky, if not rude.

    1. This is where Zink (OpenGL-to-Vulkan) can come in handy.
AFAIK, a Windows port is also happening.

But do note that it is primarily developed & tested against Linux’s community AMD Vulkan driver (RADV), not the official one (AMDVLK).
And since AMD’s official Vulkan driver is shared across both Windows & Linux: YMMV.

    2. Eh, AMD might be bad at this, but a while ago the same thing happened with NVIDIA GPUs and Switch emulators. People had to revert to older drivers to continue using them, until the fixes were made. The last version of OpenGL is 5 years old. I hate when companies cut corners for profit’s sake, but I also understand why both AMD and NVIDIA would consider OpenGL “legacy” by now.

    4. fxxking LOL, really? OpenGL is still a very popular API for indie games, eg Visual Novels made using Renpy. I’m happy that I never bother with ATI trash.

      1. It’s only a select few OpenGL titles with very specific outdated functions that don’t work at all. Out of the thousand games I’ve personally tried, everything has worked just fine, except Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, the Ryujinx emulator, and q2xp.

        1. I’m completely not surprised by hearing this news. Back in the day when practically the only major AAA titles that used OpenGL were Idtech-based games ATI drivers always had issues with them. Doom 3, Rage 1, etc. Only obstinate fanboys stuck with their trash.

  2. Someone better contact Team Reaction so they can start developing a new Jailbreak mod. Unless the old JB maps from the past still work!

Jailbreak the best q2/q3a mod ever!!

  3. Completed entire Q2 with this mod somewhere near RTX release, and it’s actually quite good one. As some mentioned already in comments, it’s taxing on hardware, but not like slideshow, I’m sure with entry RTX cards you will definitely reach 60+FullHD.
    Give it a try.
    Played in 2018 with GTX660, and 720p was 60+, and 1080p wth 45.
