Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – GDC 2013 Versus Final Build Video Comparison [UPDATE]

YouTube’s ‘XavierC520’ has released a video comparison between the GDC 2013 trailer and the final build of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. This side-by-side comparison shows the slight differences between these builds, and proves that Kojima Productions has – more or less – delivered what it showcased back in 2013. Now if only that more advanced lighting was also available in the final build. Enjoy!

    1. I think what John is referring to is how the demo build lights make dynamic shadows unlike in the final build. Look at the hospital scene for reference

Anyways, I replayed that scene to make sure and yeah, the build in PC makes dynamic shadows too. Snake and even Ishmael have multiple shadows. Console version, perhaps ?

    2. You can easily notice it here. The lighting system is better (light bounces on surfaces. Look at the left)

Here too. Notice the shininess on his bald. Also notice the light at the top right that is being properly casted in the GDC 2012 build (light on the bar right under the light source) whereas in the final build it feels fake.

I’m pretty sure we can find even more scenes showing the lighting differences. Oh, and there is that infamous scene from the beginning of the game that shows the older – and more advanced – lighting system.

      1. Different ‘time of day’ and different light sources positioning, hardly sufficient evidences for more advanced lighting system

      2. You can see the same light “bouncing” on 2:49.

The shininess on his bald is also there, on 4:41, just on the other side of his head, and not so visible because the light sources set differently.

And the whole scene is different because he wakes up while there is sunlight from the windows on the left. Of course the light bulbs will be turned off. But after he loses and regain his consciousness it’s already dark, and the lighting is almost the same as in the 2012 build.

      3. Also notice how the lights position or the TOD is different on every one of those scenes. Of course the overall image is gonna look different.

Now, compare the jungle in the first Fox engine reveal and the one in MGS V and now we are talking about a downgrade.

  1. This has been bugging me since the first day. I can’t confirm it myself coz I’ve deleted my HQ videos but did the foliage get downgraded ? I really don’t mind because I think it’s one of the reasons why MGS V runs so great on any configuration

  2. The final build looks much better, at least in most of the scenes: 0:54, 2:18, 2:49, 3:18, 4:45, etc. Not sure where this “advanced lighting system” came from, lol.

  3. While The Witcher 3 may not have delivered on the original graphics, at least they delivered on actually finishing the game.

    1. WItcher 3 was made by an independent company with a fixed budget till the end unlike MGS V. Kojima productions had no control over the financial side of MGS V compared to Konami cause Konami owned them and each company had different goals. (Konami wanted to go mobile, Kojima productions wanted to make AAA games). if Kojima knew about this sooner, he would either cancel the game before it’s too late or would manage their budget better because he obviously cared, otherwise he wouldn’t leave and would use his name for some easy mobile money.

      1. CDPR is a subsidiary of CD Projekt Capital Group, which is probably the oldest polish game development company / publisher, after Metropolis Software (which was bought and raped by CDP). It also does have shareholders.

It’s like saying that EA or Bioware are independent.

        1. thanks for telling us about CDP Capital Group (i didn’t know about it) but my point is clear and not sure how you reached the conclusion of calling Bioware independent based on my post and it feels like exaggeration. i am not talking about technicality here.

in reality CDPR is treated as an independent company unlike Bioware and that’s what matters most. that is why many including DSOGAMING call them independent (check out the Rumor article about EA buying CDPR. many consider CDPR as independent and they are right to do so). this is also why Capital Group doesn’t feel the need to attach it’s name EVERYWHERE when it comes to CDPR games among other reasons.

arguing about the independency of CDPR is like arguing about using the word Kleenex instead of Tissue so i hope that wasn’t your intention but if you want to argue about it then i am not gonna bother and you can enjoy yourself.

          1. CDP and CDPR are two different things. CDP owns CDPR and GOG, just like EA own Bioware and Origin, or Zenimax owns Bethesda, so technically CDPR is not independent, period, but if you don’t want to talk about technicalities… then what does it mean “independent”?

First of all, it means that you making a game with your own funds, not relying on anyone (and it’s usually small and relatively cheap), and this also doesn’t apply to CDP, since it has shareholders and investors to pull out a project with the size of Witcher 3. AAA development is not a place where you can talk about independency, don’t fool yourself or anyone else about that.

        2. Finally, someone said it.
All must know that cdpr is not independent and in first bad financial results will follow the road that the others public companies have taken.

  4. aside from advanced lighting nonsense, there is a bit of downgrade on the final product, especially on the scenes involving ocelot and the horse struck by lightning, and the more foggy hospital scenes… not sure if the comparison is even involving the pc version though.

    1. TW3 will take the crown, MGS V isn’t even that close imo. I fear fallout will be too dumbed down and happy-feeling, not that I will not enjoy it still.

    1. >next gen
This is current gen, and the game is cross gen. And you can see it isn’t anything super spectacular and that’s why it runs so well.
