First gameplay footage surfaces for Call of Cthulhu

YouTube’s ‘Gamesworld Gameplay’ has shared a video, showing five minutes of gameplay footage from Cyanide’s Call of Cthulhu. Call of  Cthulhu is described as an RPG-Investigation game with psychological horror and stealth mechanics, set in a deeply immersive world.

In Call of Cthulhu, players will take the role of a Private Detective, Edward Pierce, who is on a mission to find the truth behind the death of an acclaimed artist and her family on a backwater island.

The game is currently planned for release later this year.

  1. I really hope this doesn’t turn out to be another walking talking sim. I understand that not every game has to have combat, but not every game needs to talk aloud and have you walk over while pointing at objects half the time either. At least try to blend the two.

    1. Well in the video you can see there is talent tree.

Given it seems there really will not be any combat but it will not be just shallow walking simulator either.

      1. You can add a talent tree into a walking sim, that deals with “deduction” skills. Which is what that seems to be rolling with.

I don’t think adding a talent tree to gating off what we could already do in previous walking sims and P&C games isn’t a good idea

    2. Some games I’m fine with it, but it has to be damn decent. Other games I grow super tired of all the needless cut scenes that are way too long.

    3. I’m a big walking simulator opponent but this doesn’t have to be one, based on what they’ve shown. if all the clues lead somewhere and you actually benefit from paying attention to the details, as in, the cases don’t solve themselves, then it could turn out to be a really gripping game. it all depends on how the conversation system and other mechanics are implemented and if the writing is good.

also, given how slow the character is and how often the game takes control away from you I wouldn’t want combat. it would be awful. I can withstand the jarring loss of player control if I know I don’t need to save my character’s life with quick reactions. If I do then the atmosphere is ruined as I’d just worry about bad action moments the entire time.

  2. Wait, wasnt’ this one supposed to be for the original xbox?!

Nope, was called “Call of Chtulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth”.

  3. I find that conflict can yield some excitement, but it also adds flavour. A game where I constantly walk around and everyone talks nicely or talks in a mean manner, doesn’t really spice things up as much.

The real world isn’t always nice, and it’s clear that this game isn’t trying to play nice, yet it’s trying to chuck physical conflict right out the window.

  4. I’m oddly drawn to what I’m seeing here. There’s a lot that I usually don’t like (camera control being taken away, slow movement, lots of cutscenes) but I could excuse it all if the core gameplay, finding clues and talking to people, is done right for once. The atmosphere is definitely on point. The main character narrates a bit too much but maybe that’s just for the demo.
