Epic Games highlights the key features of Unreal Engine 5.4

Epic Games has released a new video that highlights the key features of the latest version of Unreal Engine 5, UE5.4. Unreal Engine 5.4 is currently available to all developers. And, the following video will give you a glimpse at its major features. So, let’s take a look at them.

Unreal Engine 5.4 has awesome new tools for creating and animating characters right inside the editor. One cool feature is the Modular Control Rig, which lets you build animation setups using easy-to-understand parts instead of complex graphs. Another handy addition is Automatic Retargeting. This tool will make it quicker and simpler to use bipedal character animations and get great results. Sequencer also got a big upgrade with better organization and easier controls. Plus, the animation system for games has been improved too.

Unreal Engine 5.4 also brings big improvements to its rendering. Epic Games reorganized things to make them run faster by doing more tasks at once. Now, UE5.4 also has GPU instance culling to help with hardware Ray Tracing. And they’ve made shader compilation even better.

Nanite got a new Tessellation feature that Skydance New Media showed off recently. Marvel 1943 will use this feature to the fullest. Also, Temporal Super Resolution has been made more stable and faster. Still, most people will likely prefer DLSS and XeSS over TSR. And… well… we can’t really blame them.

Epic Games has also showcased some other features that are more suited for films and movies. As such, we won’t go into more detail about them. Those interested can still get a glimpse at them, though, in the video.

For what it’s worth, the only game that will take advantage of this latest version of Unreal Engine 5 is Marvel 1943. At least that’s the only one from the UE5 games that have been announced so far. So, don’t expect other upcoming UE5 games to be using it. Hell, I’m not certain whether we’ll even get a game that uses UE5.3.

Epic Games released the first version of Unreal Engine 5 on May 26th, 2021, and formally launched it for developers on April 5th, 2022. So, for two years, Epic Games has been hard at work on improving it.

Anyway, those interested can find here the release notes for Unreal Engine 5.4. So, go ahead and take a look at them.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
