Crystal Dynamics today announced that the award-winning Tomb Raider has sold more than 8.5 million copies worldwide, more than any other game in the legendary Tomb Raider franchise’s history. Originally released in March 2013, the game also set franchise sales records for its first day and month.
Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics, said:
“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players. Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.”
In order to celebrate the occasion, Crystal Dynamics has released a handful of early concepts from Tomb Raider’s reimagining that can be found here.
We’ve included some of those early concepts below.
Enjoy!

I wonder how surprised Square Enix will be when sales for The Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn’t sell since this game probably got these sales due to long term PC sales.
and re-releases on the next gen potatoes.
i wish square enix didnt cancel that legacy of kain game. Look at shadow or mordor which is clearly developed by the same people…it sold.
I think it’s only a timed exclusive. In other words we’ll get the PC version a few months after the XBOX. I’m fine with that.

Not probably…but almost surely: http://steamspy.com/app/203160 *check Owners
is that even accurate? Those are high sales.
Just do the math.
In millions:
2.39 (PS3) + 1.85 (X360) + 0.87 (PS4) + 0.33 (XONE) = 5.44 (according to VGcartz and ignoring their PC stats)
…then add the almost 3 millions from steam/PC, and you have the 8.5 million units sold according to Crystal Dynamics
…so yes it is accurate. 🙂
there are also ps4/xboen and digital distrubition on consoles.
I believe that’s still in the 8.5 million mark…otherwise they would have specified those numbers are only retail.
Happy now Squarehead Enix?
does it matter? ms grabbed it for the near future.
Also what is sad is that originally they had 3 prototypes for the game.
-Swamp enviroments with sillent hill like monsters
-horse riding in open areas with shadow of the collosus gigantic bosses
-a little girl as a sidekick that helps with puzzles plus a motorbike to travel in the jungle.
Yet they decided to go with the brown and grey cover based hoboshooter 9000!!
That is what games are now, instead of making something great for a small number of people, it’s all average and shallow for everyone.
exactly. But what pisses me off is “new ips” like bloodborne and destiny that pretty much play like a previous game we already played.
When you see shadow of mordor and dying light rippingoff ubisoft, you know that devs are afraid to do anything other than copy the competition.
Thats what head of xbox said.
