These HD Mods for Valheim overhaul numerous textures

Valheim is one of the most popular games right now. As such, it comes as no surprise that various modders have released new HD Texture Packs for it, aiming to overhaul numerous textures.

The first pack comes from modder and overhauls the following textures. This pack contains 2K textures and you will need BepinEx and Custom Textures in order to use these files.

  • Work bench
  • Wood pile, Wood Chest, Wood Table
  • Straw Roof (Corner and staright)
  • Anything that uses planks, such as wood walls, gates etc.
  • Pine Tree Log
  • Forge
  • Wood Furniture
  • Adze

The second pack comes from modder ‘Louis’ and overhauls 20 textures.

The third pack is from PoisonIvy and improves 8 textures.

From what I can see, these packs feature different textures, so they should be compatible. Moreover, their creators plan to add more textures in future versions.

Lastly, Aurelius has released an AI-enhanced HD Texture Pack. This pack improves the quality of numerous vanilla textures via Topaz Gigapixel AI. This pack appears to feature a lot of improved textures. Unfortunately, though, the modder does not plan to add new textures (or release any updates/fixes for it). Additionally, some users have reported issues with some of its textures. Below you can find some comparison screenshots from this pack.

Have fun!

    1. Artstyle? This game looks like a psx game without the texture floating. Being a long time i have seen something so ugly like this.

        1. That’s the same as saying “we made the game look like crap on purpose”. Or maybe “we are too lazy so we took an psx style graphic to cut corners on dev time”.

          1. I’m not really a fan of muddy psx textures in a game that requires current gen hardware. If you like this crap so much, make it run on a psx or equivalent from that era.

          2. “I don’t like it so it’s crap!”

It do be like that, waa waa’s aside. The funny thing is that i have yet to see a fanboy actually defend the vanilla graphics, so they can only resort to attack modders trying to improve the game.

    1. I agree but it becomes a conundrum when you consider how ugly the original looks, so it’s just a question of which is worse(hint: the vanilla textures).

  1. Hmmmm according to reviews and comments I read about this game, lots of people love the pixelated look, though.

So, these texture packs remind me of Minecraft HD texture packs…
Some user will love it, but I think that most will prefer either to stick to the original look or maybe use future other “pixelated” texture packs.

    1. This is kind of like the toxic version of nostalgia. What kind of subh0man even likes pixelated low res textures?

      1. Hey I don’t know…
Personally, I’m okay with that if it’s an old game on Saturn or PS1, as long as the gameplay is good. (Shining Force III, for example.)
If you want another building game with decent graphics, I recommend Medieval Dynasty instead, which is a better game overall imho.

But what about “retro” FPS, then?
You wouldn’t like to try Ion Fury? It’s a pretty good FPS.

        1. Retro genre can be hit or miss, some will get what made the old game appealing while others will cling to the genre constraints of the time, like using muddy crap textures.

Ion Fury is decent, but i still prefer mods on the vein of Brutal Doom that tries to bring new life, graphics/level of detail and mechanics to the already stale boomer shooter genre.

  2. Thanks John, picking up the first mod was enough to improve how the game looks a ton without diverging from the original art style. You da man!

    1. The problem is that anything that can improve the graphics will be considered a divergence from the original so…

    1. It is barely an improvement from the original graphics that looks sh!te enough that makes me wonder how this shovelware could actually sell 5 million or so.

          1. I’m going to be honest with you here. Please don’t take offense to this as I’m actually all for a debate over this topic. I just don’t want to waste my time on the possibility that you don’t want to have a sound discussion about it. Surely, someone of your stature can understand that? I’d hope so.

What I’m confused about here, is the fact that you’ve now confirmed you’ve spent zero in game time with Valheim. Instead, you’ve spent far more time complaining about the graphics of the game, and have zero positives to say about it.

So if you would be so kind into answering these questions I have for you…

            1. Why are you even spending effort commenting on a game that you have zero interest in? Isn’t that wasting your time?

            2. In my experience, nobody wastes their time such as this unless they have an objective to accomplish. So, what is your objective to accomplish with spending time berating a game title that you have obviously zero intention of playing?

            All The Best.

          2. “1. Why are you even spending effort commenting on a game that you have zero interest in? Isn’t that wasting your time?”

I like to comment on crappy games, the more popular the game, the better, so it’s not a waste of time if i’m enjoying myself.

“2. So, what is your objective to accomplish with spending time berating a game title that you have obviously zero intention of playing?”

My objective is to entertain myself annoying fanboys.

      1. For $20, you get dozens of hours of game play. A game that’s far more optimized than any recent AAA title I can think of, and this is an EA title.

Graphics aren’t everything. And once you play it enough, you forget about the graphics. Playing on a $3k machine and I find it to be splendid fun, especially with friends.

Graphics and visual fidelity is great to have, but I’d rather have mediocre graphics and great game play than outstanding graphics and mediocre game play.

        1. “A game that’s far more optimized than any recent AAA title I can think of, and this is an EA title.”

What are these AAA titles you think of?

“Graphics aren’t everything. And once you play it enough, you forget about the graphics.”

Yeah if you live in a turd smelly place you become numb towards the smell long enough.

“I’d rather have mediocre graphics and great game play than outstanding graphics and mediocre game play.”

There are hundreds of thousands of games out there, you don’t need to compromise one for the other.

          1. Why are you so upset about an Indie developer gaining tremendous success? What’s the real reason here?

          2. 1. “What are these AAA titles you think of?”
Cyberpunk 2077 ring a bell? One of the most hyped games of the last decade… While the graphics are great, the game play was absolutely abysmal. Completely unoptimized, terrible system and mechanics, unfinished product at launch.
If you need more examples, I can lay them out for you. But that’s a great start for bringing your memory up to speed of recent happenings.

2.”Yeah if you live in a turd smelly place you become numb towards the smell long enough.”

This doesn’t even make sense, nor is it a question.

            3. “There are hundreds of thousands of games out there, you don’t need to compromise one for the other.”

You’re beating around the bush here, and this isn’t a question. You blatantly called out Valheim for its terrible graphics. You also asked why 5 million downloads have happened, I fully answered you. And you’ve yet to form a sound rebuttal.

Graphics were the topic, gameplay was linked in due to your confusion of why Valheim is so popular.

I can try and dumb this out a bit better if you’re still confused.

          3. “2.”Yeah if you live in a turd smelly place you become numb towards the smell long enough.”

This doesn’t even make sense, nor is it a question.”

It’s called an analogy, i’m surprised you don’t know that, how old are you?

“You blatantly called out Valheim for its terrible graphics.”

And no one contested that, not even you so i am right. And yeah, i’m fully aware of the lack of good taste coming from the mainstream PC community, no need to rationalize that for me.

          4. So you’re allowed to used an analogy, yet chastise me for doing so? Hypocrisy, don’t you think?

          5. I chastised you for not knowing what an analogy is, and i still do since you said you have done an analogy yet i don’t see it.

            “Hypocrisy, don’t you think?”

You don’t know what an analogy is, and you also don’t know what hypocrisy is, leave the debate to adults kid, go play your game.

          6. “Leave the debate to adults kid” – Real debating Adults don’t get wrapped up on things not pertinent to the debate, like poking fun at people that may or may not know what an analogy is. Sounds like YOU don’t know what a debate is. You want to know why it’s sold 5 million copies but you can’t wrap your head around a concept that 5 million people may think that the gameplay is better than the toned down graphics and can only resort to pulling out sh**ty analogies that come off as left handed comments and then feign ignorance that all you were doing was “making an analogy”. You don’t like the graphics? Fine… but if you want to debate about what makes the game so good that 5 million people might enjoy it despite your not liking the graphics, then you have to open your mind a bit and not be such a pr*ck.

          7. lol, here comes another fanboy…

“Real debating Adults don’t get wrapped up on things not pertinent to the debate, like poking fun at people that may or may not know what an analogy is.”

Except i didn’t make fun of him, just observed and pointed out how dumb he is for not knowing a simple concept. What is it with Valheim fanboys and their ignorance of simple concepts like analogy and “poking fun”?

“You don’t like the graphics? Fine…”

It’s not even the ugly graphics that irks me, it is the fanboys like the one you are defending making fun of modders trying to fix the ugly graphics that rubs me the wrong way… Then getting mad that someone dares to see how ugly the game looks and throwing impotent accusations because they can’t really justify the game’s ugliness without sounding silly.

“but if you want to debate about what makes the game so good that 5 million people might enjoy it despite your not liking the graphics, then you have to open your mind a bit and not be such a pr*ck.”

Here’s a novel concept for you kids: Popular things doesn’t automatically make them objectively good, blows your mind, i know…

          8. Zero time spent in game, zero ability to denounce the games major reason of it selling 5 million plus copies (game play, content, etc).

            Your opinion is moot.

            Appreciate the time.

          9. Lmao “denounce the game reason for selling” WTF does that even mean? Yeah i know, dumb things can be sucessful and i should get over it, satisfied?

            “Zero time spent in game”

It’s not like i claim any in-depth criticism of this particular game, just commenting on some ugly screenshots which somehow made you mad lmao. The funny thing is that you criticize the modders trying to fix the ugly graphics.

  3. Those HD textures just look ugly mixed with the low poly models, just goes to show how well Valheim’s art direction works.
