It appears that the source codes for the Nintendo 64 version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy and for the Playstation 1 and PC versions of Mortal Kombat 3 have been leaked online. Now this is strictly illegal and as such we won’t allow any links to the files (they are real as some users have already been able to compile them and run them).
Now since we’ve seen numerous Mortal Kombat MUGEN games, we can’t help but wonder whether this leak will lead to some better unofficial MK games. Theoretically, users will be able now to re-texture characters and release proper executable versions of them (they will still be considered illegal). Furthermore, talented programmers may be able to add new characters with new movesets.
This leak opens up a lot of possibilities, though we are certain that Warner Bros may be pissed right now (as it currently owns the Mortal Kombat IP). After all, the company has released some collections featuring these classic fighting games and we are pretty sure that it will keep releasing them in – perhaps – every new console generation.
Still, and as gamers who love Mortal Kombat, we’d love to see some new experimental versions of these classic games. Obviously Warner Bros is not going to offer any Ultimate version similar to what some gamers are creating with the MUGEN engine. Not that the MK MUGEN games are not great right now. Some of them are truly fantastic. However, we’d love to see some custom MK games in their default/original engine.

Awesome, here comes some fan-made games!
“talented programmers may be able to add new characters with new movesets.”
or if there is any competitive community for those games they could implement balance improvements for the existing characters and make the game more competitive for the pro scene. usually the last thing a game with a bunch of characters / classes needs is more of them.
Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To make all games open source
old hardcore fans mortal kombat>>>> ed boon.
Ed boon is a lying sack of sh*t
Are you talking about a MK1 remake? Have a link to this?
Nope, that’s from the MK HD Mugen game (that it is still under development)
Yep, this one. It is all being recreated, there is a video or a gif somewhere showing the process, taking the og sprites and modelling in 3D.
The dev was asked and said something like “legal reasons, can’t comment until next year” which seemed a bit… Yeah.
*fingers crossed*
It would be amazing. I know they did a reboot a bit ago, but a full remake would be excellent. The later games never really captured the grit and feel of the original three.
“Warner Bros may be pissed”
That warms my heart.
