The latest game from the devs behind Goat Simulator, Satisfactory, has sold 9 copies on the Epic Games Store [UPDATE]

Satisfactory, the latest game from the developers behind Goat Simulator, was released exclusively on the Epic Games Store last month and it appears that it has not sold well. According to the developers, the game has sold 9 copies (after some refunds from buyers that were not satisfied with it).

Satisfactory is a first-person open-world factory building game with a dash of exploration and combat. In this game, players can chart and exploit an alien planet, battle alien lifeforms, create multi-story factories, enter conveyor belt heaven, automating vehicles, and research new technologies.

Contrary to all of Coffee Stain Studios’ previous titles, Satisfactory is currently available exclusively on the Epic Games Store; a move that most likely did not pay off.

Not only that, but the team currently doesn’t have any plans for bringing this game to Valve’s digital store.

This right here shows why most indie developers should stick with Steam, at least for now. Yes, Steam is flooded with a lot of mediocre and shovelware games, however most good indie games still sell well there. Of course we should also note that the game is in Early Access so this could also be one of the reasons behind these low sales (in other words, it’s not guaranteed that it will sell 1000X times better on Steam if its current state is not that great).

So, even though triple-A games may sell well on Epic’s store, it’s quite obvious that this exclusivity deal didn’t benefit Coffee Stain Studios. And perhaps this should be a lesson to all other indie developers as such a misstep could very well put their company into real danger.

UPDATE:

Some people suggest that these are parody/trolling tweets (however there is no reason for the team to do such a thing and create a controversy out of nowhere. Also, the fact that the team insisted on attacking pirates and that all these tweets weren’t made on April 1st is fishy). If that’s the case, though, well played Coffee Stain Studios. We’ve reached out to Coffee Stain Studios so we may have more to share if they decide to reply.

UPDATE #2

Although Coffee Stain Studios has not replied to our email, it has posted another tweet in which it basically confirms that the previous tweet was a joke. I still don’t see the reason behind this, especially since the “low sales” issues is something that affected a lot of indie developers in the past, but yeah; apparently everything is fine and there is nothing to worry about the game’s future.

  7. I hope you realize that Coffee Stain are masters of memes and jokes, and not always being 100% serious with things. (Reminder: They made Goat Simulator. I think that speaks for itself.) Or maybe this article is “in on the joke” and I’m completely missing the joke.
    Obviously they didn’t actually only sell 9 copies. I know just myself and a few friends who have been playing it account for 4 copies sold. And with over 20,000 active users on their Discord server, it is a statistical impossibility that only 5 other copies were sold.
    So other than me overanalyzing an obvious joke, and why it confuses me that this article exists, without even a hint of being sarcasm or tongue-in-cheek. I don’t know.

    Either way, I know it’s fun to take any excuse to hate on the EGS. I don’t agree with how heavy-handed Epic’s been with exclusives, but some people really are ridiculous with the level of hate they throw towards anything related to EGS or games released on EGS.

          1. From what they’ve said, they’re doing just fine. Just because you’re doing fine, doesn’t mean you can’t still complain about piracy. The two things are not exclusive. They also tweeted “Enough about sh**ty pirates […] We are doing great and the love and support we receive from 99% of y’all […] is just incredible.”

            Doesn’t sound unhappy to me. Just helps reinforce the satirical nature of the original “9 copies” sold.

      2. Just came here to say that I’m torn on this as well.

        Other sites are picking up the story (couple of Russian sites have run articles based on their tweets), but I’m still confused about a couple of things. For instance, if it was all just a joke why spend two whole days (April 24th through April 26th) across their main account and dev accounts arguing with people about the piracy issue and the sales? If it was a joke you wouldn’t have to waste time arguing with people about it.

        Some people suggested that maybe they sold 9 copies that day/week and were just frustrated overall with the low sales. I honestly don’t know at this point.

        If was all just a joke they could have told the pirates “lol joke’s on you we sold a heck of a lot more than that!” and shut down their detractors, but that didn’t happen at all. They ended up giving up on it and saying they were no longer going to engage on the topic.

        I don’t know. It’s a weird situation, but maybe it was their way of putting eyes on the topic?

        1. Piracy does not actually affect sales incredibly. Most people who pirate are people who don’t have the money (teenagers, people in 3rd world countries, etc). The people who do have enough money but still pirate usually pirate it as a sense of demo; if they like it they pay for it, if they don’t they delete it from their hard-drive.
          As an example, I remember pirating a game when I was 15 and played the game for hundreds of hours, and now that I’m 20 and have the money I bought the game and have barely played it.
          Edit: the majority of people who pirate are people who don’t have the money to spend on luxury items like games. They aren’t going to pay for the game even if they cant pirate it

    3. One thing is what they do as a game, and another thing is managing their PR properly. One, Satisfactory is kinda serious game, much more serious than Goat Simulator. Now, one tweet is trolling, but telling people STFU and keeping the “joke” telling others to get mature and not to pirate it seems they are kinda going beyond the “joke” line.
      I actually believe too, that it cant be that bad. But they are spilling the beans on their tweeter, beyond anything you can qualify as “funny”.

All this only shows is how desperate the developers of Satisfactory and other Epic Games Store timed exclusive games have become to get some publicity for their games and are willing to say anything to get some eyes on them. On Steam their games would sell themselves provided they were of sufficient quality and they would not need to lower themselves this much for attention.

  31. I bought the game, after being recommended it by a number of friends who had also bought the game. I enjoyed it enough I personally bought it for three more friends so we could do a four person server. So unless I accounted for half of the sales myself, its pretty fair to say this is joking around because everyone seems to think sales on epic were so bad.

    Someone on the satisfactory subreddit(which is surprisingly active for there being 9 of us and seems like an easy way to fact check before posting an article to support your confirmation bias) referenced a commend they heard from one of the dev’s about making the game exclusive. Sounds like the payout was enough to support the development so they could just make a good game instead of focusing on marketing. Thats third hand info at this point, but if so I think its pretty cool they can just let word of mouth do its thing and frankly the game is amazing. One of my co-workers on Friday asked if I had heard about the game because his friends were trying to get him into it too, so I’m guessing word of mouth is starting to work.

    Side note: The most recent update got a short delay for public testing it first and to announce this the dev’s put up a 4 minute video. Just over 3 minutes of the video was a tutorial on how to make chocolate milk from powder, then they quickly explain that shooting the milk stuff took 4 days so the patch would be out later than expected. Probably shouldn’t take them too seriously. But as a dev, they have a roadmap, actually communicate about where they are in the development and are active in their subreddit, and seem to have quite a following that keeps growing. They are pretty worth supporting even if change is scary and all that.

    I supported CSS. But they absolutely deserve any failure especially after their comments. Your studio literally would not exist without Steam. Period. It isn’t a matter of debate, you would be out of business. Steam is the only reason Goat Simulator sold.
