Steam Survey August 2016: Almost 50% of the Steam-survey takers use Windows 10 64bit

Each and every month, Steam conducts a survey to collect data about what kinds of computer hardware and software its customers are using. And according to the August survey, Microsoft’s Windows 10 64bit is the most popular OS as almost 50% of the Steam-survey takers is using it. Furthermore, NVIDIA and Intel have – once again – slightly increased their dominance.

As we can see, 57.57% of Steam users are using an NVIDIA GPU, while 24.44% are using an AMD/ATI GPU. Moreover 17.56% of Steam users are using an Intel integrated GPU. Compared to July’s numbers, NVIDIA got a 0.59% increase and AMD saw a 0.24% decrease.

Moving on to the CPU side, 77.40% of the survey-takers prefer Intel’s CPUs, while 22.60% prefer AMD’s CPUs. In other words, Intel saw a 0.15% increase and AMD saw a similar decrease.

Regarding the CPU cores that Steam-survey takers use, 46.87% of them own a dual-core CPU, while 46.48% own a quad-core CPU. Only 4.55% has a CPU with more than four CPU cores, and 2.10% is still on a single-core CPU.

  1. Now how about these devs make it worth it and deliver some DX12 titles that actually see the gains we were promised.

        1. when developer go low level they should be able to gain more performance regardless async compute being use or not. if developer strictly need async compute to gain performance with DX12 then they are not using their opportunity with low level good enough.

  2. Before a console fanboy claims only 36.95% people use a 1080p. I would like the clarify that 36.95% use a single 1080p screen and an additional 30.35% of people use two 1080p screens connected in a multi-screen configuration, this could also mean a PC connected with one 1080p monitor and one 1080p TV. So a total of 67.30% are using a either 1 or 2 1080p screens.

    1. You are wrong and confusing others.
      Each stat is separate, the 30.35% is how many people THAT USE Multi-Monitor setup use that resolution.
      It has nothing to do with single display setups.
      The fact is that most PC gamers dont have FHD screen.

    1. kaby lake and zen cpus wont work with 7, 8, 8.1 so you can bet anything that comes out in the future wont as well

      1. We’ll see about that. MS thought they could restrict DX10 to Vista and make people get Vista that way. Now they think they can restrict new CPUs to Win10. We’ll see. Patience is key when it comes to technology. Intel and/or AMD might backtrack (if not for these CPUs then for the next batch) or some court might rule that CPUs must not be limited to a specific operating system. There may be other scenarios. Whatever ends up happening, there is no reason to use Win10 now or in the near future.

          1. List a few of these “dozens” if you’d be so kind?

            (Minesweeper Premium doesn’t count, just for the record)

      2. im pretty sure they will work. however they wont get any support from intel/amd/microsoft should any issues arise.

      3. People still falling for the obvious baits in 2016 LUL

        MS is super untrusty to take their words seriously , like 9 out of 10 stuff they say are lies.

        Tbh the best os to use right now is 8.1 , it has all the positives of 10 (without dx12 sadly) without the negatives. All you need is StartisBack+ and you are fine.

        Maybe i will be proven wrong who knows but i doubt that this will happen , its like then Nvidia was like “9xx series is dx12 !!!1!1!1” and it wasn’t that good on dx12 , plus 1xxx arrived which is better etc.

        They are trying to sell something right now and they will say everything in their disposal to sell it.

    1. Its better than Vanilla Windows 10 but some settings that you may have changed have been reset after the update so make sure to change them back again.

        1. Cortana, windows defender, internet search infested with ads, apps, automatic updates, notifications ect. ect. ect. They keep making it harder to turn off and rearranging the ui and hiding options so that you wont turn it off. M$ can eat a chode

          1. Dear Microsoft Spyware 10 user;

            It is our delightful responsibility to inform you that for your own good, you are no longer capable of disabling Cortana anymore 🙂

            – Signed,

            Your Friendly Overlords, Microsoft Corporation.

            P.S. If you’d be so kind as to waive your rights to sue us now & forever – yes, just a quick “john hancock” jot right there, & done!

            Good man.

            ALRIGHT BOYS, ROLL OUT THE SPYWARE, THEY SIGNED!

          2. yes you can disable even Cortana, but better Tweak is to disable:
            Defender, One Drive + etc. + telemetry and you have Fastest OS to date ! Download this:
            -> SDCutTheLine
            -> Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4.1
            And you ready to go.

          3. If you install antivirus, windows disables defender automatically.

            also try O&O ShutUp10, its from known dev

    1. “If you can provide with actual number then I gotta believe windows 7 is dying!”

      Ask Valve – those statistics are from Steam Survey 🙂

  3. No offence but these articles are kind of pointless for the reader(cheap/free ad for Valve and M$oft, possible income for author), what’s interesting is how many people all over the world are addicted to M$ofts products. A life-long addiction you could say.

    Anyway, what I like is the title specifically says “Almost 50% of the Steam SURVEY TAKERS use Windows 10 64bit” and people should be reminded of that.

    How I see it most people with W7 don’t feel the need for flaunting their shiny new OS like Winten’s users partaking in arbitrary surveys and whatnot.

    And as someone has already mentioned in the discussion with a nice cow example you can perform magic with percentages, so what would be actually useful are concrete numbers of those Steam SURVEY TAKERS.

    Let’s publish those numbers, Valve. What do you say?

    How many Steam users actually partake in surveys compared to all users?

    But that wouldn’t produce such a favorable pr article for both involved corporate bodies now would it?

    1. taking a survey in steam is automatic, you are asked to do it once in a while and when you hit yes – valve auto-gathers all the info. So there’s no reason to doubt the results.

      1. So why do they keep on publishing some unmeaning percentages only not the actual numbers then?

        Because most people don’t give a sheet about pointless surveys and the concrete numbers would likely be laughable compared to the amount of Steam users.

        1. Steam survey is as close to the real situation as it gets. Millions of PCs are polled all the time, the amount of participants sociologists can only dream about in other things. It’s enough to poll just around 3000 people to know who wins the election in a 30 mln country with nearly the exact percentage +/- 1% and millions of steam users bring the ‘statistical error’ down to 0.00s of %

      2. What if you hit no?

        O.o

        I mean, sure, we know Microsoft doesn’t give a sh*t about “no”, but I’d like to think Valve accepts it when people say “no” & doesn’t take their information anyway, ergo, the only way to have truly accurate results is like with the Population Censuses that States keep doing, & even then, those results always need a pinch of salt.

  4. Makes me wonder why the whole focus on Steam survey now. I’ve been lurking this site for a number of years and I’ve only seen DSOG only pay full attention to it with the whole hype on Windows 10.

    Each article btw points more towards Windows 10 than it does GPU’s.
