PCGames magazine revealed some new screenshots and details about the upcoming 2.7 version of Star Citizen. Star Citizen is powered by CRYENGINE and these new screenshots look really amazing. Moreover, the game’s 2.7 version will introduce procedural generated planets.
As PCGames claimed (information collected by Reddit’s ‘blablablablabla78’:
2.6 will launch Star Marine as separate module just like Arena Commander, this was also played by staff of PC Games and they are saying it’s much more polished on the FPS side and feels a lot better than current rudimentary FPS in the PTU. – Interesting side-note: they talked about map->s.
2.7 will bring procedural planets and you will be able to travel the whole stanton system and all planets and moons can be directly approached down to the surface.
- They say the new lighting system as part of the procedural planets build looks much more natural.
- They say that approaching the planet looks and technically feels better than with Elite Dangerous.
- You can land anywhere manually, automatic landing gets you to fixed positions i.e. landing zones.
- Microtech and Hurston come in follow-up patches after 2.7
- They aim to have Stanton fully playable i.e. with all stations and landing zones (according to CR about 40 locations) by end of 2016
- There will be more jobs and missions as well.
- Trading will be in by then
- Chris describing that missions accepted up in space stations could lead you eventually down to planet surfaces, not clear if this is going to be in with 2.7 but seemingly something SQ42 will benefit from.
- Planets and moons are revolving around suns, with naturally simulated day and night cycles.
- When flying over the ocean they were noticing that the horizon had a correctly simulated curve.
- Trees and Animals seemingly are planned (edit: doesn’t seem to be in with 2.7, sorry) – they have them seemingly setup in pre-made templates they call eco-systems – these can be brushed over the planet surface, some magic blends the transitions to make it look naturally and consistent.
- Planetary surface and topograhy details are controlled by a dynamical LOD system.
- Some pop-up was visible during the planetary approach but they described it as impressive regardless.
- They were also impressed with the cloud system, which wasn’t just a simple texture layer but seemingly is described what I assume would be volumetric, i.e. they have deepth and height and impact visibility, leading to mountain crests piercing through clouds and valleys being covered.
- They are writing that there isn’t any artificially restricted view range, visibility is rather a result from the volumetric calculation of the athmosphere.
- Parallax-Occlusion maps with dynamic tessellation is used for the surface details.
- GTX 980 was used with 100 fps on the planetary surface, so performance seems to be pretty good already, sorry, that was just editor performance – in-game performance was 45fps đŸ™‚
- Some stuff about the subsumption-AI saying NPCs might have hobbies and a virtual mind, allowing them to remember the player or be influenced in his opinions by the player. To avoid performance issues, they seemingly control the update cycles for NPC AI based on player proximitiy i.e. update cycles go to 1hz instead of 60hz if no one is around.
Enjoy!

Unbelievable. There is one more screenshot that shows the entire sea, and it looked amazing (saw it at imgur).

Couple of images are posted here, and TC also posted couple of links, where you can check out more screenshots.
Honestly, space ships should have no problem “flying” through water as well as outer space.
Actually, given the level of realism they are going for, I’d say a space ship should not be able to submerge itself more than 2-8 feet before springing leaks from water pressure. My hope is that instead, they’ll make submarines that you can rent or buy while on the planet with an ocean.
I saw a structural engineer discuss this issue when they showed the trailer for the Star Trek movie where the Enterprise flew out of the ocean.
He said it’s extremely unlikely it would work because in a space ship, the forces are coming from the inside pushing out. Underwater the force is coming from the outside pushing in.
Basically, it would be an engineering nightmare to design a ship that could take that kind of force coming from both inside and out.
starbound sucks, elite sucks, no mans sky is gonna suck and this is gonna deliver.
Cute.
its the truth and you know it.
I don’t know sh!t.
I haven’t played Starbound, waiting to play NMS and don’t have money or PC to back and play SC (which also isn’t even fully out, so out of my purchase rules).
And while I’m not a critic, I think I can come with something better than “this suck because I’ve said so”.
The problem with those games is that they claim they are huge with so many things to do and how varied they are, but the reality is you are doing the same thing over and over again with different colors
You just described videogames.
Yeah, Elite turned out to be dissapointing.
not as disappointing as starbound and anyone with a brain knows that no mans hype will be a repetitive borefest
You’re talking about most Ubisoft games these days I see.
True but alt east they have a campaign.
they’re all boring including this game
When? 2023 when it finally comes out?
When it’s done, those like me who took the risk to fully crowdfund this franchise, did so with no deadlines to getting it done, I expect CGI to get it right, not fast.
Failure is always possible, success never guaranteed, if CGI give it their best shot, and miss, so be it. I’m satisfied they are pushing the limits of the hardware, being at the cutting edge is always a high risk strategy, but no publisher would take such risks.
Star Citizen will succeed as a crowdfunder by satisfying the backers, nobody else, if it does that it doesn’t matter if anybody else buys it. Much like publishers are satisfied by the profit, backers satisfaction is all that matters for crowwdfunding success.
In reality, satisfying the backers, will mean a great series of games, and many post release sales, but being a successful game is separate from being a successful crowdfunder. If PC space sims were as dead as the AAA publishers claimed, SC would only interest the backers, so it’s already been a huge success, by reviving the entire genre.
It’s like these people think they’re original when they leave this comment. Guess what guy, ten thousand other people have said the exact same thing and chuckled to themselves like they were witty.
They weren’t.
You’re not.
Nice, I’ll send you the bill for my ointment that I’ll need to apply after that sick burn. Say hi to your mother for me!
Davos got fed up with dragons apparently
Yea lol đŸ˜› is that him?
I think
It is.
well that clears that then…
Large scale games take a lot of time to make, who knew?
Erm… You can easily google that info :v
There is a massive spreadsheet detailing the crowdfunding and development.
CiG does a monthly report, multiple weekly shows, has released numerous alpha builds, and is in constant contact on their forums. But yeah sure, there has totally been a “troubled” development.
F*ing idiots man. You guys have your head burred in the sand and you wonder why all you see is dirt.
No need to call him names though.
Also, buried*
yeah, the insult wasn’t directed at him personally, which is why i said “you guys”. I was mostly referring to the “Derek Smart power brigade and their marry band of nay-sayers” when i made that statement.
Got it.
Lol @ Derek Smart, that poor sod just can’t let it go.
how has it been troubled? it takes years to implement tech into the engine like 64 bit conversion, the zone and physics grids etc
goto the government… you mean the DA? the problem with refunds is that this money is working capital that is being used to build the game. If suddenly everyone went to get a refund they literally wouldnt be able to complete the game as they would have no money left. Thats why they changed it, you cant set a budget for the next year or so if the money is going to get taken away from it. So there making it harder but its for a reason
im not bothered about grammar. That guy seems to have been a backer for years. Is that a reasonable time period for getting your money back?
Show me a single game that has never had a complaint.
They keep getting money apparently.
He’s probably thinking like the AAA studios that can put open world game franchise out every year, apparently it only takes them a year, so why does it take this game 3 for an alpha? Tell him how long these games actually take and how you don’t get access to the alpha all the time right through the development. We’ve been able to play the persist universe from day one of it’s release in Star Citizen, people act like no one can play it.
First we need 2.5 (1-2weeks away) then 2.6 and finally the 2.7…
Progress!. Time to get back in when 2.5 hits.
Damn, I’m excited. Will you be able to do something else than explore those planets?
Sweet Mother of Derp, all praises be to Kek, of course you will.
To be exact, I meant activities on planets. Not if planet exploring was the only thing in the entire game.
yes, they are going to introduce mining and salvage with hand held tools. This means we will be able to find ore deposits and possible space ship wrecks planetside that we can then harvest with the hand held tools.
Whoa, I can’t comprehend the vastness of this game!
They said they’d like to do missions. So you might get one for hunting down some criminal who’s hiding out in some camp on the surface of a planet(my own example, not CIG’s).
Is that ma friend sir Onion from GoT? Holllly Mollyyy! And is that..I mean..HOLY S**T …it is MARK HAMILL! He looks so goood.Graphically speaking of course.WOW. O – O

I want to fly into a planet and greeted by a vast sparkly ocean. Just once, please make it happen!!!
so when this damn thing going to be release ? what is the premise of the game ? what is your damn purpose ?
Depends on which game you mean, the Squadron 42 SPG is a series of games, and pretty standard fare, for that type of thing.
The Multi-player is not an Ultima clone MMO, which are single player campaigns, with many players playing that one story together.
Star Citizen is a PU (Persistant Universe), it has no campaign, events occur once and time has meaning, if I follow you into an area, I see things as you left them, not respawned.
CGI create the Universe, and content is generated by player interaction. The universe persists, you want that shiny new gun, but it’s made in another system, so must be delivered, creating a task for another player/NPC, that delivery needs an escort, as it’s a juicy target for raiders, all creating more content for players to do.
That elusive WoW killer, will not be just another MMO, it will be a PU, where each players story is unique, SC may not be the WoW killer, it’s the first PU.
I detest MMO campaigns, as they are nothing but a single player campaign.
The challenge of a PU, is to make the Universe interesting and detailed enough to allow the player to build a life story from those foundations, and make it fun.
The one thing it’s not is repeating the same scenes (quests), for each player
Screenshots looks epic but when you watch some gameplay on YouTube the aliasing and texture are just wtf.
Yeah, I’ve notice that Anti-Aliasing tends to look bad when it’s not actually implemented. Weird how that works, huh?
This game will be the biggest scam of the 2000-2030 period.
Soon, they will have received like 200 million dollars, and there’s still no release date announced : because without a release date, the millions will keep falling from the sky…
What is the biggest joke : they were supposed to grab like 3 millions through kick-starter, and are now close to 150 millions. Of course, like me, you may think ‘OK, with all that cash, people who invested money will get the game and its content for free, right?
wrong. There are millions of in-game purchasable items to buy, millions. Not only they are getting close to 150 millions cash, for FREE, but they will make even more money by selling the game, + even more more money, with all the millions items they will sell. Many fans will certainly spend 2, 3, 5 or 10 thousand dollars on the game, to buy new space crafts, new options, etc. Crazy.
‘Oh, guys, we just reached 100 millions. We can now create a new ship for the game. Amazing work. But if we reach the 120 millions, we can build another ship. But, if we reach 130 millions, we can add a turbo and 3 new textures, for the ship’. And so on and so on.
I bet my ps3 and ps4 and my 200 games that in 2018, the game won’t still have a release date.
And I’m waiting for the day they will announce ‘dear fans, unfortunately, due to the crazy stock market and banks and bla bla, we no longer have enough cash to continue developing and eventually finish the game. We know you already spent like 150 millions, but, if you really like us and our work, if we can find 100 millions in the next 3 months, we will finish and release the game. If we only get 90 millions, too bad, we will have to cease the game development. Thanks’
Recently, they modified their policies, people no longer can get a refund , only under some particular conditions people may have their money back. Lol.
Like something big is coming…
Come on, fans, grab your visa, and donate another 1000 dollars to the game. If they reach 200 millions, they will create a new space shuttle with your name on it. Of course, you will need to buy the option ‘rename ship pack’ for 5 dollars only.
Can you imagine if they reach 300 millions? You might be able to ressurect commander Shepard, from mass effect. And elvis Presley.
And with 400 millions…. oh god, all the options the game will have…
You probably haven’t played the alpha and probably never will, try it and tell me it’s a scam, tell me all the studios they setup are a scam, all the people they employed is all a scam, yeah they are all being paid for a scam, all the AAA actors are doing a game for a scam. Since went did Chris Roberts scam anyone idiot?
Because you have put some hundreds dollars into the game, you will now defend them like they were your own family. And you will call people ‘idiots’, to make everything look more serious, more dramatic.
I remember reading they have hired some specialists to create new full alien languages, spoken and written. I bet so far, the only alien languages in the game are French, italien and German. That barking pitbull, hey, that’s not an alien language.
You may argument as much as you want, but the fact is, anyone who put at least 60 bucks into the game should be able to get ALL the content, and the space crafts, all options. Imagine those guys who put 300-500 dollars into the game, and one day, they will be playing it, they will see a blue or green spacecraft, will click on it, and will get the message ‘buy it for only $9.99’. Oh wait, that rocket launcher would go really well with my yellow spaceship. And those humming missiles look so damn powerful. Oh wait, a message says each one costs $6.99.
How can you praise that crap?
With almost 150 millions, they should be happy they can pay their employees, finish the game, and have a huge profit, even before starting selling the game at some retailers.
150 fking millions.
Even ubisoft, games like watchdog or assassin creed, sometimes they have like 900 people working, multi teams, multi sites, abroad, locally, etc. And their games don’t even cost 100 millions. Even a game like gta5, which is HUGE, only cost like 137 millions to make (another 120 millions on marketing).
I mean, star citizen, it’s barely some space crafts, some planets, some npcs. ..even a junior designer can make a full modeled and animated spaceship in one week. In 6 months, 2 or 3 designers could have made above one hundred spaceships. That’s why when I read the guys ‘dear gamers , thank you for your donations. Now that we went from 90 to 100 millions, we will be adding a new blue-carbon-extra-smooth-low-power spaceship, available in 2 different colors’. What ? Besides the AAA titles, most games don’t even cost 1 million to make. And the star citizen guys, with over 10 million dollars, all they do is a new spacecraft ? Lol, come on.
The day the will abandon their project, and you lose your 400 or more bucks, you will then remember my comment. Until there, you will be so excited with each new announcement, that you are ready to spend another 100 bucks, if they promise another 20 amazing features that will never see the light of the day.
Announce a damn fking release date. But hey, by doing it, they will stop that steady flow of money they have learned to love.
In front of the thousands readers that will read this comment,
I bet 100 bucks there will be no release date announced, until December 31 2017, and I bet another 100 bucks the game will remain in beta. 2017, 2018, 2019…
LOOOOL ^
LOOOOOL
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Anyway I paid 45 dollars last year and I’m receiving all of the content as it comes. Trolling seems like it’s fun. I should try it some time haha.
You know what will be funny?, if the game actually comes out finished and the people that called scam are going to get hounded till the end of time. I’m talking I told you so times a million if not more.
I imagine if it were the other way around then people will simply move onto something else to fund/play but that same can’t be said for the accusing group as they were never really invested but served to just sit there and point fingers. All they have left is to be called tards for the rest of their life.
You gave me some laughs….thank you.
You do realize all the ships will be able to be purchased in-game without real money? Dumb donkey
“an you imagine if they reach 300 millions? You might be able to ressurect commander Shepard, from mass effect. And elvis Presley” LMFAOOOOO LOLOLO my wife asked me what had me laughing so hard man this WAS TOOOOO FUNNY
It’s the nature of our hobby. There’s a lot of money to be made in gaming. I think it was 2014 when League of Legends took in one billion dollars in micro-transactions. Never played the game or any like it but apparently there’s no lack of people with cash to spend on games like that. I will buy Star Citizen when it’s finished/patched/polished and on a sale. It looks phenomenal at this point.
Whenever this game gets a full and proper release date, my social life will be nothing but a memory. I am afraid.
Onion knight FTW đŸ˜€
no they havnt been screeewing him over at all. he only wanted a refund because the changed the TOS to make it harder to get one later but if youve put 3 grand into a game bit strange how you would want one later because to put that much into something you obviously want to see it make the light of day.
He also said something like the game originally promised is different to what is being delivered…. yeah the one being delivered is vastly superior to the one promised. Maybe because hes disabled in a wheelchair he already feels like alot of stuff is out of his control and maybe this tipped him over the edge to get a refund.
Holy fck! yep I will need a “volta” x70 to play it at avg 60FPS haha
