Sonic Utopia is one of the coolest fan-made Sonic games, first version now available

Sonic fans, here is something special for you today. Mr Lange, Murasaki Fox and Tpot have been working on a fan-made 3D Sonic game, and have released the first version of this game. Yeap, you read that right. You can go ahead and download a new fan-made Sonic game. And it looks really, really cool.

Sonic Utopia is described as an experiment that not only tries to expand on Sonic gameplay in an intuitive way in 3D, but also aims to capture the best of Sonic’s style and tie it together in a cohesive experience.

According to its creators, nearly everything in this demo, from art to sound to the gameplay engine, was made from scratch.

Sonic Utopia is powered by an engine created by Murasaki Fox.

SEGA has been really open to fan-made games, so we’re pretty sure that this project won’t be taken down.

Those interested can download the first version of Sonic Utopia from here or here.

Have fun!

    1. Sonic expo is a thing? I’d rather have been a part of the People’s Temple suicides than go to one of those.

      1. You should probably stop leaving unoriginal, snide remarks whenever someone’s preference doesn’t suit yours.

    1. What didn’t you like about it? I played it tonight and really enjoyed it. The level didn’t feel all that focused and the controls could definitely do with being tightened up a bit, but other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

      1. Exactly what you said, the controls felt a bit too stiff for me.
Also, never liked the “sandbox-like” approach when comes to the level design of the Sonic games, it just feels weird to me.

        1. Depends on your point of view regarding the sandbox approach for Sonic games. Even the 2D classic games were kind of sandboxy, especially Sonic 3&K, even if you were going right for the most part.

When I play a Sonic game, sometimes I just like to screw around with the physics. After some replays, I just go full GOTTA GO FAST mode and try to zip through the stage as quick as possible.

          1. I get that, but I don’t know, with the full 3D something get lost IMO.
The fast gameplay + open levels just doesn’t sit right to me, I rather have the straight line with hazards like a endless runner, quick reflexes and all that (not that I’ll be great at it though hehe).

The 2d ones worked for me because of the platforming nature, I never saw them as the “gotta go fast” thing (especially the first game, Marble Zone is dreadful drag compared to Green Hill), they just had the occasional “wooooosh” in some stages.

          2. I don’t really have a problem with 3D, well the good 3D Sonic games, anyway. If anything, 3D would expand more on the mechanics and physics present in those games, if done properly. And I’m not saying there aren’t some good 3D Sonic games, the boost trilogy is really good, the Adventure games, while heavily flawed, still have something worth enjoying and I even like Sonic Heroes, if only for a single run of the campaign (because getting the “real” ending is a pain…).

This will sound weird, but I actually like Marble Zone, especially in the Taxman and Stealth Android/IOS version of Sonic 1. Heck, I like Sonic 1 more than Sonic 2 for a couple of reason, mainly the less obnoxious enemy placement and more open ended level design. Sonic 2 always felt like you were forced to go fast, rather than go fast on you’re own.

I like Sonic games because I CAN go fast, not because I HAVE TO go fast. After all, Sonic the Hedgehog is still a platformer at it’s core, albeit, one with an emphasis on flow, momentum and even style. If I wanted to just go fast, I’d just play Need for Speed (and I mean the good ones, not the ones after 2012…)

    1. To be fair, most times Sonic has been done in 3D has been completely different games to the original platformers. This one at least keeps a lot of the open style/choice of the original games, as well as the quick flow.

As far as adapting the game to 3D, this is probably the best you will get, or some variant of this. That said, if you prefer the 2D, that’s also understandable.

  1. My only issue is the camera keeps spinning wildly for some reason. Making it impossible to play. Anyone know how to fix this issue?
