Rocket League will get a paid crate loot system

A couple of days ago, Rocket League players found images pointing to a paid crate loot system coming to the game. And Psyonix has confirmed that it will indeed implement such a system in order to fund its esports prize pools and events.

In order to avoid any misinformation, Psyonix revealed some more details about this new system that is coming to Rocket League:

  • Crates will contain cosmetic content only. We have a strict “Don’t Sell Advantage” policy for Rocket League, and we’re sticking with that.
  • There will be no Steam Marketplace integration with crates. We are definitely aware of the problems related to third-party gambling in other games and we are not interested in taking that approach.
  • Players who don’t want to interact with this system can hide it entirely with a single checkbox. Also of note, this won’t affect or impact our current item-drop system in any way.
  • We also want to reassure you guys that we are sticking with our approach to keep introducing free new Arenas, Modes, and Items, along with the occasional paid DLC just like we always have.

Psyonix will officially reveal this new system next month at (or near) the RLCS Live Finals.

  1. >Players who don’t want to interact with this system can hide it entirely with a single checkbox.

Let’s hope this checkbox works a little better than the one that’s supposed to hide rank changes (that one hides the actual writing but the disruptive screen still shows after every match).

And all this gambling stuff is cancer. So what if it’s only cosmetic stuff, you’re still taking an idiot tax from people with addictive tendencies. How is that remotely ethical?

    1. All forms of marketing and selling goods involve trying to break people’s willpower and get them to buy stuff they normally wouldn’t. If someone has addictive tendencies, that’s their problem.

      1. “If someone has addictive tendencies, that’s their problem.”

This rubs me in such a wrong way. :s

          1. You misunderstood.

The underlying issue I saw with the way you put your words is the following:

“All forms of marketing and selling goods involve trying to break people’s willpower and get them to buy stuff they normally wouldn’t. If someone has addictive tendencies, that’s their problem.”

Rocket League ERSB: Rated E for everyone

What do you suggest? A disclaimer that says “contains stuff to break your will” or something developed without it in the first place?

      2. Look, people with addictive tendencies are all around you. If you let companies exploit them then YOUR products will be shaped by that. The games YOU want to play will end up containing all these gambling elements, instead of being good games. There is a 100% selfish, pragmatic reason to be against all forms of gambling in video games. Gamblers have clearly sunk billions into Valve at this point and look at them, they haven’t made a game since Half Life 2. They just outsource everything while focussing on their digital stores and gambling racket. Do you not WANT Half Life 3 to ever be released?

  2. $20 game, new maps and modes are free, cosmetic only items in crates. I have no issues with this whatsoever.

  3. Psyonix really know how to make it work. From the get go, all they’ve done has increased the replayability and the fun. I would’ve never thought that 1 year ago. Kudos to psyonix for creating such a fun and addictive game. Even after 600hours i still have fun doing tricks and stuff.

  4. Here we go! Get ready for Gambling Rocket league sites to show up cuz this is what we all have been waiting for

  5. There weren’t any “bad” words. For some unknown reason your comments were awaiting to be approved.
