Rise of the Tomb Raider Officially Announced, First Details Unveiled

Crystal Dynamics today announced its latest title in the critically acclaimed and award-winning Tomb Raider series, Rise of the Tomb Raider . The game will aim to redefine survival action in Holiday 2015.

In her first adventure, Lara Croft was forged into a true survivor, but she glimpsed a deeper, secret world. In the next chapter of her journey, Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider.

Darrell Gallagher, Head of Product Development and Western Studios at Square Enix, said:

“With the power of the new generation, and our proprietary Foundation engine, our high octane action moments will be even more epic. Multiple locations around the world will be filled with exploration spaces that are some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth and over three times larger than we could achieve before. Our digital actors will rival CG quality, and after hearing the cry from our fans loud and clear, we will put the tombs back into Tomb Raider, all in our gritty Survival-Action style.”

Rise of the Tomb Raider builds upon the formula that made Tomb Raider a success, and features the return of Camilla Luddington as Lara Croft. Camilla will take character performance to new heights as Lara pushes herself beyond human limits and is confronted with what it means to become a hero. Once again, Crystal Dynamics is proud to have the award-winning author Rhianna Pratchett as a key member of the writing team, helping craft a story that delves into Lara’s inner turmoil and motivations in this critical second act of her journey.

  1. Enjoyed the last Tomb Raider game more than i thought I would so im looking forward to seeing more from this. Not too keen on the name though.

  2. what a stupid name and so to justify the killing through out the first game she is cynical and a psycho now?

    1. Like a lot of games now, the game is boring if you’re not killing something or killing lots of things. Making the excuse Lara didn’t like tombs was just a get out not making puzzles and exploring. AC4 is just the same, you can kill every guard in the game just by blocking, FarCry 3 just the same, Jason kills more pirates than pirates kill tourists and is a complete nobody by some guy telling him he is special. Aidan in Watch Dogs, another mass killer. Booker from Bioshock Infinite is another mass killer, they share that same thing and all have combat areas that look predictable and staged, one button kills and one butt hacks.

  3. I just finished Tomb Raider GOTY less than a week ago and was one of the biggest surprises for me…I watched some gameplays and I totally lost interest in it, I thought it looked horrible and that it wasn’t a real TR.

A couple of weeks ago saw a sale at Humble Bundle store and went for it since I played the first one and almost everyone of them in the past…so why not buying it? Finished it and I can say that it is one of the best games that came out in the latest years without a doubt.

I liked every bit of it till the end…the story kept me interested all the time, the progression was really good, gameplay was almost perfect and graphics were great overall. I completed it at 100% in 24hs.

Linear (all Tomb Raiders were linear after all) but with sense all the time, you could see how the character (Lara) evolved and how she reacted over everything made she look more alive than ever.
I also saw some “fans” of the saga that said things like “This is not TR this is Uncharted”, “The way she became a pro killer was too fast”….I mean come on…go and play the old ones…she used Magnums as main weapons with “lock on target” mechanics, you had to kill a T-Rex at the very first minutes of the game…etc. It never was “realistic” at all…This game at least makes sense in the way a game can make sense.

The only thing missed here was the fact that she could not swim at all…or I missed one of those hidden caves in where you have to go underwater to found the entrance or something similar. More complex puzzles as well…but really the game felt like a Tomb Raider.

    Can’t wait for this one.

    1. Well no, Combat was a small part of Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 2013 is a big shooting gallery to the point of she murders more enemies than even the enemies do, it’s a complete massacre. The Shanty Town is where it all starts going down hill, you kill about 30 enemies in that part alone as the bodies mount up at the door way to the trap. It’s a decent game but not a Tomb Raider game as we know and love.

The idea of the reboot was to get more players from the Gear of War type games, this just copied the genre just for high sales(which they missed anyway)

      1. The combat was HORRIBLE on older TR games though. I can’t complain about them making it better but I agree that they emphasized on a it a bit much. I thought it still had a good balance of platforming, treasure hunting and combat though.

        1. Like Resident Evil but they’ve both changed into cover based shooters over time like every other and what do you expect, they’e design for joypads because people can’t turn the camera, aim and fire or jump at the same time.

          1. I played it (TR) with my Logitech G510 and Mad Catz M.M.O.7 mouse and it felt really good.
If you compare that to how the mouse responded in Resident Evil Revelations (I had to turn my DPI´s to the minimum)…or the first Dead Space…ugh…don’t make me remember that please. (at least they got it right on the second and third game)

It is true that these games are designed for controllers but some of these games (not all) “play better” with a controller. At least third person view games.
I always play with Keyboard and mouse but sometimes I try with my DS3 (MotionJoy) to see how it feels since I have no problem to play with pads.
A lot of people say that Batman Arkham City plays better with controller but I played all my 60+ hours with my keyboard and mouse…I will do the same with Arkham Night for sure.

      2. “she murders more enemies than even the enemies do” Right.. i guess you saw all those wrecked ships and how they’re just killing off every survivor on them? Sure, killing of just 3-4 people is totally acceptable, but self defense is a sin. I guess next time, the enemies should kill at least 2-300 people, just so it’s okay to kill them for it.

  4. i liked it, nice CGI but i guess it will be a good game too (hope for open world or better design and bigger maps), hope to see some gameplay footage on day 1 or 2 or 3 and some tressFX2.0 with better optimization
