Report: PC gaming was the second strongest market in 2016, earning a total of $35.8bn between January & November

PC gaming appears to be thriving. According to SuperData Research, PC gaming was the second strongest market in 2016, earning a total of $35.8bn between January & November. Mobile gaming was the strongest market and console gaming was the third strongest market.

As SuperData Research claimed, PC gaming is growing by 6.7 per cent year-on-year. This figure includes social, free-to-play, subscription and premium PC games.

League of Legends and Overwatch drove PC sales. PC gamers also saw a big improvement with the release of a new generation of graphics cards, offering a 40% increase in graphics power and a 20% reduction of power consumption.

This basically proves that PC gaming is one of the most crucial and important markets. But then again… we are pretty sure that most of you already knew about it.

  1. I dont need to know it, when I can play Starcraft BW online still on 2016 and at the same time play Cossacks 3, I know Im playing in the right platform.

  2. bullshit, include microtransactions, twitch donations, PC hardware market (graphic cards, cpu, monitors, ssd and etc), no amount of sold consoles could cause this much cash flow, i’m not going to mention other game distribution platforms on PC and grey markets

    1. “no amount of sold consoles could cause this much cash flow”

Obviously, consoles are sold at a loss to make up the sales from games. Consoles dont cost as much as pcs nor have as many different hardware. Not to mention that the pc games market is much much larger with tons of old games still selling. As for grey market… ehmm you cant track those you fool. So the “cash flow” is even higher than reported

      1. PC games market is much much larger?
Not sure about that, sure pc market is larger, but the games related im not sure, when people talk about numbers, they should look at quantity, not price, the sums of consoles and i mean all consoles far surpasses the pc gaming sales in quantity, you have to remember that pc is a more expensive machine with higher profit margins…
If you take games sales, PC do not touch in relation to console game sales, added to that piracy that only diminishes the total sales on pc.

        1. Actually, game sales on PC go on and on for years. Console sales on the other hand, end up tapering off after the few first weeks and months. Skyrim has been selling on PC for years now. On last gen systems the number dwindled and came to a halt with current gen. Now SSE has to be sold as a new game for current gen systems, but even then it won’t catch up to Skyrim’s sales on PC, let alone the copies given out to those that own the DLC on PC as well.

Companies absolutely love putting focus on the day, week and month 1 sales, than say months and years later. That’s why you end up seeing “X console users bought Y game in the thousands”, in such a short amount of time, but you don’t hear it years later, because no company that sells their game reports on such data.

          1. Some companies just prefer to cash in check within year, while others prefer to milk game for years and sell it at lower price.

          2. Ok, I’ve noticed your likeness to replying to everyone in the same sort of fashion.

Again, like the “everyone dies” part, grass is green and the sky is blue.

          3. Sorry but thats not true, i agree with the console momentum, after all the hype, but on the pc happens the same thing but is simply diluted, when consoles sells in the first 3 years some millions of each game, PC sells much less, but by the time maybe it achieve the same number of sales, in all truth thats rarely the case.
            Piracy only worses the problem.
There is some kind of conspiracy behind that PC billionaire business, because is a fact that sales have been declining substancialy lately and they need to pump it up again. VR is hope, many don’t buy desktops anymore, is a minority, only gamers or heavy media producers. This research made sure that PC needed to be first, like a receipt from a company, to say that they are healthy as they never were before…
Im no console fanboy by any means, but its easy to see that discrepancy Data was not meant to be impartial.

    1. Jesus we had maybe 2-3 bad ports the entire year… I swear sometimes i think you people dont actually game on PC, you just read the BS articles off console focused sites and then comment.

      1. It gets even worse when you consider some hardcore console fanboys, end up tossing around “flops” this and “4k” that, like they think they know absolutely everything, yet they still think PC is only about MMO’s and Mobas.

      1. It’s going to consoles in Jan….

With it being so close to the PC release, I’d still say that it was a console port due to how it runs in general.

    2. >with the console ports that are being passed off as PC games

AAA game sales account for barely anything in that 36 billion…Majority if F2P garbage or subscription based games.

      1. Agreed but what we do with the phone should not be taken into consideration. When push comes to shove this post is just about sales.

        1. When you take in to consideration that everyone has a phone these days and there are a large number of older games being ported to mobile platforms (GTA games for example) it is easy to see how mobile could take the lead. Let’s not forget the massive amount of F2P games with microtransactions.

          1. it is easy to see how mobile could take the lead

I understand, but still I can’t fathom how can a $2 game surpass a $60 game, even in large numbers. PC titles have microtrans. as well.

I get it it’s happening, the numbers are there, I just don’t see it.

      1. So if I buy 1 € game to kill time I shouldn’t be counted, but if you buy some crap that makes your knife look different you should?

        1. Don’t go picking CSGO fights here. I learned the hard way, csgo 13 year olds with mummy’s credit card will attack you in hordes.

    1. I gotta commute 2 hours on a train, beat Zelda 64 on a smartphone. Get me PS2 emulator and Gran Turismo 4 and I’m set!

  3. 35.8b on pc 6.6b on consoles what now console fanboys?

“hur dur mobile market is 40.6b” 5,6b? PFFFFT that will be covered in a year or two….seems denuvo did not improve sales enough to reach these sales :D!!!

    1. You know them, they’ll call it F2P games and MMO’s, when in reality it’s a combination of all sorts of games and userbases.

  4. It’s sad that the PC market is being driven by F2P trash.
Vast majority of that revenue was from the F2P market….

    1. While a lot of F2P games are trash, there are many games that are F2P and the paid aspects of the game are largely cosmetic and the game itself is actually incredibly well developed. So in a way I do agree with you, but I also want to point out that just because a game is F2P, does not mean it is trash.

    2. Path of exile f2p trash > MarvelHeroes f2p trash > Diablo 3, full priced AAA title.

edit: confused about the signs 😀 fixed.

      1. PATH OF EXILE, BABY!

        YEAH!

But yeah, he has a fair point, in the end; good F2P games are the exception, not the rule, unfortunately 🙁

Even more so than modern AAA games, even….. sadly.

      1. Yes, but so are those that wander onto other sites as well. Especially ones that spend their time going to other websites and trying to dismantle other “fanboys”.

    1. Hence why PC has been evolving for years, as well as mobile.

Also a bit random and out of place to toss in the fact of biological life into all this.

If you want to say that this news doesn’t matter or isn’t important in any way, then by all means go for it.

      1. I’m saying everything dies eventually some people are pretending like people will keep doing same things over and over again. You don’t see riding around on horses do you

        1. Except the everyone dies part or doing the same thing has absolutely nothing to do with my talk of console gamers getting usurped by PC and mobile gaming. Nor does “You don’t see riding around on horses do you”, make any sense either.

  5. Not surprised.
Not only are free-to-play games more frequent these days, but I have seen almost everyone I know, jump from a console to PC simply because it’s factually better.
    – cheaper prices
    – more controller options
    – far more future proof
    – upgrades possible
    – far far FAR more games
    – games that can’t even be played on consoles
    – faster network play and with that, faster downloads and installs
    – far more useful (browsing, Photoshop, animations, game development etc)
    – far more personalization
    – way more cost effective in the long run (hell, even if you buy a 1200 dollar PC, you make that back in less than a year)
    – Everything loads faster and runs better, even on very cheap cards simply because of how PC’s work
    – multiple monitors is an option

Everything is just better. I have a laptop that’s almost 6 years old and (specially now with Windows 10) it’s still really fast and can play games. I did buy a Gaming dedicated PC in that time and it’s probably the best investment I ever did.

  6. Consoles pretty much signed their death sentence when they stepped in the x86 arena.

8th gen console history so far:

    2013
x86: You either update every 18 months (moore’s law) or get FUBAR

Conslows: 18 months? Pff..! We update every 6/7 years…chill dude.

x86: B+#CH YOU BETTER SHOW ME SOME UPDATED S#°T ASAP OR I’LL HAVE YOUR GUTS FOR BREAKFAST!

…3 years later PS4 Pro is out, Xbox Skorpio is desperately in the works.

  7. Nope, in truth you sound like a PC fanboy, because you argumented to all people that disagree with you in this comment section.
News are reliable? Statistics that show only one side of the coin are really something to look at you can always have diferent perspectives about data exposed.
Look around yourself, the majority of people today does not even have desktops anymore… Is laptops, tablets, we computer nerds are a minority or do you really think otherwise? 90% of people only needs a intel igpu and a processor that acces internet, and do runs decently the Office package.

      1. Hey, i don’t give a F to your opinion about me, keep this obssessive, compulsive, abnormal behaviour responding everyone that disagree with you. Happy cristmass @ss h0l3

        1. “Hey, i don’t give a F to your opinion about me”

Oh but you do, because you’re actually going well out of your little safe space to address what bothers you in the first place.

Why don’t you keep yours with you as well.

At the end of the day, you are wrong, data shows this as well as the market in general, end of the story mate.

          1. lol, and yet I have no strings on me, because I am not aligned to a corporation like console users are.

You do care though, like it or not, you definitely do care, because if you didn’t you wouldn’t be replying to me and you’d walk your own way.

I care because I know you are flat out wrong, yet you cannot accept this, so instead you resort to acting the way you did.
