Earlier today, it was hinted that the PC version of Mafia 3 was locked at 30fps. While most assumed that this lock only affected the review code that was sent to a number of publications, we can now confirm that the retail/Steam version of Mafia 3 is indeed locked at 30fps.
This is really disappointing for a triple-A title. Perhaps that was the reason that 2K Games did not send any review codes prior to the game’s launch? One can only guess.
For what is worth, the game features a FOV slider, though we are pretty sure that most PC gamers will be disappointed with this 30fps lock.
2K Games and Hangar 13 have not provided any explanation as to why the PC version is locked at 30fps.

Great! What’s the excuse this time?
Isn’t it obvious?
IT’S MORE CINEMATIC LIKE THIS, BRAH!
Devs probably were focused on consoles that couldn’t run it at stable 60 FPS, so they cut it down to 30 FPS. At the same time, they didn’t really care about PC so they thought such a crappy port would suffice.
Either that, or some f*cking moron thinks this is the 20th century, so they hardcoded a 30 FPS cap right into the engine, ala-Dark Souls.
Seriously, these days, I’ll believe just about anything when it comes to Developer f*ck-ups.
Yeah, I thought of it, too. Maybe the FPS cap is hard-coded but it could’ve been at 60 FPS before they noticed that consoles couldn’t run the game at this frame rate.
How the bloody hell can the devs be this retarded.
30 fps have never been okey on the pc, it should allways be unlocked, and today when we have g-sync/ freesync. This is a F*CKN joke!
On Monday I got me one nice Acer 27 1440P g-sync monitor.
Well if this is true I will never buy this POS!
Turns out it’s just temporary, they’re working on an update for unlocked frame rates.
Either way, that’s some sloppy decision-making.
What?. Link? Source ?
mafiagame[.]com/en/news/view/en-mafia-3-a-message-to-our-pc-players/
Oh okay. I’ll consider it damage control until it is actually settled. Until then, it’s a no go.
Yeah I seen that, they got a s*itstorm for pulling this retarded stunt, and they deserved it. How crazy can they be, did they actually belived that we pc gamers would just take it sitting down :/
Gratz on the new monitor! GSYNC truly is a game changer. For me it was anyways.
Thank you. I had the Rog Swift before but this Acer is even better, can overclock to 165hz if one like, not that I care about that tho. But the screen coating is much clearer. They uses a lighter matte screen coating now. Plus that is have g-sync gen 2.
So it’s awesome and I couldent be any happier!
No clouding/backlight bleed or dead pixels eaiter, I got a perfect sample 🙂
Oh Gsync gen 2? I have the first swift edition. Should i upgrade ? Is there a difference between the gens ? Never heard that , im curious.
Well if you have no problem with the monitor I think you’re fine.
You know many having problem with the first Rog; strange artifacts and the picture was like shaking (dont remember the word for it)
Mine swift did have that problem so I just returned it and actually sold my gaming comp. It was in winter 2014.
But I build me a new nice gaming comp winter last year with Skylake 6600k with 16GB memory and GTX970. I only used my old Asus VG278H until know, It’s a drag to play at 1080P and no g-sync, it’s bloody aweful LOL.
So here I am today with this great monitor and as said it’s perfect and way less grainy coating 🙂
With g-sync gen1 they could only use DP on the monitor but mine also have a HDMI port (not that I care about that tho). I belive you should only use a high end pc to such monitor anyway 🙂
And that it also can use higher refresh rates as mine can O/C to 165hz.
Other then that it is of course more stable and refined version of g-sync gen1. But as said, if your happy with what you have and no problem I dont see why you should upgrade!
Gratz! I’m sure it’s a nice monitor you have! Is it an IPS panel? If so i was looking into that a week ago, if it was worth switching from a tn based gsync monitor to a ips based one. I just could use the 165hz in rocket league and counter strike 🙂
because pc is dying…simple 😉
ps4 is 30 fps too must be dying also.
no because i only need 399$ , you with a 1200$ you have a game like the console version LOOOOOL!
Nice troll attempt. The Devs. have already announced that un-locked frame-rate is coming to PC… So cry away console peasant.
Oh I forgot… LOLOLOLOLOL!
Don’t worry lol, consoles are running this game in 240p upscaled
LOL.
.joke.
Wow, refund wave incoming! If this is true they deserve the same fate with arkham knight. I had high hopes for the game, this is just sad.
Was going to buy this game, but now absolutely not.
I hope no one will pay for this trash, I wont even pirate it. This POS dont belong with a pc gamer :/
Oh yeah, Mafia III is coming to PC. Can’t wait to play that game at 60 FPS.
*See’s the title of this article*. Oh… Oh no.
30fps on GTX 1080? LOL. Who want buy this game?
Dammit, we agree on something.
No wonder it’s so cold today >.<
P.S. How's Tears of War turning out?
Metacritic 85 and rising – some sites like Polygon, IGN, Eurogamer give 9/10 but their reviews are not used by metacritic yet. Optimization is also great, GameGPU give 4 stars of 5. Forza Horizon 3 have only 1.5 stars, and Quantum Break have 1 star. So Gears 4 is best optimized UWP game yet.
Some sites say that Uncharted 4 and Gears 4 will fight for GOTY 2016. We will know tonight. Less than 5 hours to go
For sure Gears will be better game than Mafia 3 🙂
Doubt it, EA will buy the top spot for Battlefield 1, I bet.
Nice to see good optimisation, though. Saw the Tech Interview on EuroGamer, some interesting stuff they’ve vested into this.
We will see. I think Battlefield will have good multiplayer and bad scripted campaign. Like all DICE games. Without good single player or cooperative campaign this game can’t fight for GOTY.
Agreed, for whatever it’s worth, but that really doesn’t matter much; awards go to the highest bidder, not the best storyteller these days.
Probably even new COD will have better campaign than Battlefield 1. Activision already confirmed cooperation in main campaign. EA doesn’t say anything about cooperation in BF1. Game with good cooperation is always better to play. Its strange that EA doesn’t care about campaign in their games.
DICE hasn’t done Co-Op since BC2, IIRC, so yeah, I also highly doubt it. Not to mention, like you said,EA hasn’t said a word about Co-Op. Historically it’s been a strong [enough] marketing point that they’d be discussing it, “trailering” it, actively promoting it, etc. if they actually had any to show off with.
Not sure if the Call of Duty Campaign will actually be any better off in the end, though. Infinity Ward’s thoroughly traded in quality for mediocrity lately best I can tell, though I admit the space setting is interesting, if nothing else.
In a way, it makes sense, “technically.” Take the Battlefront game – they saved a lot of money by not doing a Campaign, even though that was the one game from DICE in this decade that actually should have had a Campaign Mode.
Overall however, by this point, nobody associates the Battlefield IP with anything but MP, so the SP has been reduced to being thought of as nothing more than just a tack-on “fill the check box” thing in order to make people feel better about spending so much money on “just” an MP game – “oh, but it has a [tacked-on] Campaign Mode too!”
It’s the psychological factor, it appeals to the dumb masses.
You can’t seriously be using Metacritic AND sites like Polygon as reliable sources… LOL. Game blogger reviews are a joke.
Judge from PC users feedback, like Steam reviews, and watch gameplay/performance test vids.
Even Steam Reviews are only so trustworthy, to be fair.
Way too many sycophants on established franchises by this point claiming the new entry is “The Second Coming” even if it’s actually the next “Katakarna” instead.
Good job turning that into a pump ad for MSFT UWP games.
“Some sites say that Uncharted 4 and Gears 4 will fight for GOTY 2016.”
F those sites and F you too. Only a re*arded peasant cares about goty and what those sites are saying.
“PC version is locked at 30fps”
XD
Buuuuu…Dammit with the consoles
This time its not consoles :I
a new refund simulator
I don’t get it. Why would they do that ? Are they trying to troll PC gamers ?
Especially after 2k17 turned out good on pc (60fps, no crashes this year,etc..), not sure why they would allow a big series like mafia not to run at higher fps…
What makes you think that 2K forced the 30fps lock? This has always been up to the development team (in this case, Hangar 13).
Hello John,
If 2K doesn’t have quality check before releasing actual products then they’re a bunch of clowns.
who in their right mind plays a game @ 30fps? WHO?!
console plebs, thats who.
Oh man, this whole thing with Mafia III’s release has been fishy. No early reviews, and now this 30 fps lock. This really doesn’t provide confidence to its consumers does it?
I was debating between this and GoW4, and well I’m glad I’m getting GoW4. That game already has really favorable reviews out.
Microsoft money hard at work ;D
Good optimization “at work”. Gears use their own “fork” of UE4 engine with added suport for DX12, Multi-GPU, UWP and full global illumination. This fork is released for free on github (site where developers share open source code). All users of original UE4 can download MS version of this engine for free. I hope that more games will use that version of UE4
“One small bummer: Gears of War 4 doesn’t support multi-GPU SLI or CrossFire setups out of the gate, though the developer plans to add it in a future patch. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, sadly, given the shoddy current state of multi-GPU support in games.”
– PCWorld’s “Tested: Gears of Wars 4 PC benchmarks yield glorious graphics options galore”
As for DX12, Unreal 4 has had DX12 support for a while, but yeah, going by the EuroGamer tech article, it seems like Microsoft’s Xbox Direct3D team made some custom tweaks to the Xbox DX12 implementation of Unreal 4, in conjunction with The Coalition.
Not sure if The Coalition implemented UWP support into Unreal 4 or if Epic Games did, but regardless, minor feature, to be fair. As for The Coalition’s Global Illumination solution – interesting. Is this the inferior tech solution that replaced Epic’s original GI “because [reasons]”, or is this just an alternative solution provided by The Coalition, much like Nvidia’s VXGI?
Possibly. I’m looking into it, but I’m not getting anywhere so far. The consensus is basically “Global Illumination on Unreal 4 is a f*cking mess” right now.
No, just a proper pc version
Uh.. What?
favorable reviews
Tell me that’s not true, I’m saying it as it is.
You want me to tell you Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Activision, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount, MGM, Universal, etc. etc. etc. Have never paid people for reviews, or, as they put it, “offered” early access/screenings in exchange for “favourable reviews”?
You want me to tell you it’s not a massive habit for video game journalists to offer positive reviews to developers &/or publishers in exchange for review keys? You want me to tell you Microsoft is too good to bribe people into supporting one of their precious Xbox’s Tentpole IP’s with advance release “favourable reviews”?
Sorry, no can do.
Well i don’t know dude, i don’t trust reviews at all, specially when it’s come to AAA games with industry giants behind them.
And I understand that. But mainly the reviews I’m talking about are a handful of those I trust.
Yeah, i’m not criticizing you by the way even upvoted your original comment when i saw it.
I know you dude, I understand and respect your concerns. ^_^
Also it’s not really sites mostly that I’ve gone off on, it’s mainly this network of critics I know who I informally kept bugging about what they thought, and these guys are some of the coolest people I know, or at least I know they’re not getting their pockets lined with cash.
Thanks 😉
Yeah i agree, they are still some good critics out there.
Mafia 30FPS edition
Would have bought it, now I won´t. Well played 2K
LOL
Is this a joke ?
and the hype this time almost got me, I was going to pre-purchase, not anymore! thank you DSOG!
30 fps frustrate me to the point i cant play the game anymore,30 fps feels laggy after getting used to 60fps or above.
I still question how 30fps is still the lowest common denominator. Are mobile games running at 60fps?
Help us, Day one patch. You’re our only hope.
Lol never buying. *removes from Steam wish list*
yeahhhhhh the next mafia not coming to pc hahhahahahaha
If there is a next mafia and all mafia games are on pc.
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e84aab1d8eb1b08e1b5cc5b4e88fc402eec3f90b14b6167b30cce6894a72a625.jpg
Was going to buy. Now i’m not. They can go f themselves.
hahah I knew it this game is a flop I called it :O
Hmm, in a holiday season flooded with huge games coming out, I wonder which I should cross off my list first…
all, has 2016 released ANYTHING that wasn’t a HUGE disapointment?
Hitman (2016)? But technically it’s not actually done, yet, so…. Hm.
2016 pc games locked 30fps :I
looool 1200$ for running a game like console….
pc is dying 😉
again? f’ u triple A publishers
I bought it directly from Steam and not a CD Key this time… if this is true I’m going to nicely use the Steam refund system for the first time.
This is an unfinished product and the signs are showing. they need to work on the NPC A.I in the game which to me is mediocre. Protagonist whistles, NPC walks over stupidly to investigate the noise and gets slaughtered with his buddies are standing just 5 feet away, totally uninterested that their buddy just got killed. Give me a break! They need to seriously review the AI, cause its going to be a game breaker
what a shame, not grabbing this even with my friend’s telling me how great it is – broken games can’t get support from my wallet.
*facepalm* I get when old games built shortsightedly for very specific hardware are locked to 30fps, but this is both a modern game AND a PC series. How in the heck do you mess that up with a 30 fps lock? *shakes head*.
What are these crackers smoking?
The first mafia to be locked at 30fps…being a pc gamer is tough this days 60fps with a lot of stuttering or constant 30fps FML
Glad I didn’t preorder. Though I suppose I could have gotten a refund on Steam.
they know they can not leave it that way.
Here’s a quote from the Mafia 3 page:
“[…] The team has been hard at work ensuring that Mafia III’s performance is consistent across all platforms, and right now the game runs at a solid 30 frames-per-second. We are
currently working on an update for PC that will give players the option to play Mafia III at higher framerates. We’ll share more details about the update, and when you can expect it to arrive, very soon. […]”

AND another deception !
After reading all that, like it was written out as being caught out and now they have to adhere to actual demands to make the game as it should be. All I can think of is saying “fuck you” to the devs, mainly because they never once thought that PC gamers greatly dislike being locked down to 30fps. We’re not console gamers and PC certainly isn’t a console platform either and never will be, so locking any game to 30fps oN CP makes no sense what so ever.
These devs asked us to flipping pre-order their god damn game and now, only now when they get caught with their tail, do they ask us to give them feedback as to what options we’d like in our game we paid up front?. No, no fuck that disgusting trite.
It’s 2016 and we’re being asked and are paying full price for a AAA game, that doesn’t come loaded with the standard PC options, doesn’t come with unlocked fps and isn’t even tailored that well to PC gaming. I cannot even 2k, I just can’t.
See I get and understand indie devs, most of the time those guys do right by PC gamers, they actually depend on the money and feedback from that userbase since they are also the first platform that is open enough to pitch their ideas/games. But for some fucked reason AAA devs and pubs keep repeating the same ideas and actions, over and over again and expect things to get better for them and for us, but they hardly ever do.
We’ve reached a fine point in gaming where some indie titles come out and play better than a rushed AAA game that has millions poured into it and more staff slaving on the game itself. Ubisoft spent absolute millions on Creed Unity and slapped so many devs together to get it to run and look good and in the end it turned out like crap.
AAA devs these days seem far more interested in repeating on concepts and asking for more, rushing their games and begging for forgiveness later on while still desiring to hold your money. They feel more these days like indie devs of the past (not the greed part mind you, just the rushed and clunky af parts).
Doesn’t matter if they “asked” for preorders, or not.
They are controlled buy the publisher, and they only care that you buy the game, they know most pre-orders will never get a refund, so they’ve got your money, which is all the publisher cares about.
If you pre-order you’ve no right to complain about the finished product, you bought it, before it existed.
If you wait and see, what they release, you will not get burned.
The only thing publishers care about is your money, and getting as much as possible, for the least effort.
The only complaint that counts is not buying crap products, stop buying sh*t, and any unreleased game is sh*t, until you can see what is actually sold.
There’s no point crying over spilt milk, if you’ve already bought it, seller doesn’t care.
Hmm – rather explains why they were giving out no review copies doesn’t it.
Was planning to stay up late and play this for a few hours after midnight Swiss-time – guess instead it’ll be Steam refund and bed time. Bummer – was really looking forward to this 🙁
Fu*king consolized game developers! This flaw only reveals the truth about the coding and optimizations of this game = for consoles.
is this “temporary” as in “only until PC gamers complain loudly enough”?
Could it have been done to raise awareness of the game by channeling gamer outrage? I for one had largely forgotten about “Birth of a Nation: The Game”, aka Mafia 3, until this came back.
This is a mafia game where an african american vietnam vet spends a large portion of the game slaughtering KKK members. Did I mention this is a mafia game?
I guess he slaughters a bunch of mobsters as well.
Having a game locked to 30FPS is most of the time a telltale sign of a bad port.
Indeed!. Once you get freesync or gsync, gaming is not the same, for the better. People underestimate these monitors.
Absolutely, once g/free-sync there is no way going back 🙂
We can all thank nVidia for that, they were the first with this great tech. One can wonder why it dident emerge way before. It was the missing link to gaming as it should be IMO!
Indeed. Good talk!
