It appears that Intel has announced price cuts for the current 9th Generation ‘Coffee lake’ Desktop CPU lineup as part of its promotional price drop. TomsHardware has spotted several Intel processors listed with up to 25% discounts, at some of the major retail outlets.
Intel also responded to Tom’s Hardware with this official statement:
“Promotional price drops are one of the ways we work with our partners to continue supporting the strong market demand for high performance processors in the DIY segment.”
Prices of 9th-Gen Core processors have recently dropped at several retailers. This appears to be an official promotion from Intel. The price cuts aren’t listed on the company’s official price list though. Intel didn’t give Tom’sHardware any more details regarding this new promotion, such as how long it would last or how many retailers are involved.
The 9th Generation Core Coffee Lake-Refresh lineup was launched last year. The Intel Core i9-9900K 8 core CPU was the flagship SKU with a clock speed of up to 5 GHz, which made it lead the gaming charts in terms of performance. The Intel Coffee Lake family has already been replaced with the 10th Gen Comet Lake Desktop CPU lineup. The price cuts do make sense given the pressure from AMD’s current Ryzen CPU lineup.
There have some rumors before that the 11th Generation Rocket Lake desktop CPU lineup is due to release in Q4 2020, or Q1 2021 next year. So it makes sense for some of the retailers to get rid of current Coffee Lake inventory, given these CPUs are also based on the old LGA1151 platform.
There are currently price cuts on the following SKUs, the Core i9-9900K, Core i7-9700K, and the Core i5-9600K. The Core i9-9900K which is an eight-core 16-thread processor is now selling for as low $435 at various online retail outlets, including Amazon, Best Buy and Newegg. Next up we have the Core i7-9700K which also sports eight cores, but lacks Hyper-Threading. This particular SKU is selling for just $339 at Amazon. Lastly, the Core i5-9600K can now be bought for $194.99 at Amazon or Best Buy.
Intel appears to be clearing out the current inventory of its 14nm 9th Generation Desktop CPUs to make room for the upcoming ‘Rocket Lake-S’ CPU lineup.

Hello, my name is NICK Richardson. I’m an avid PC and tech fan since the good old days of RIVA TNT2, and 3DFX interactive “Voodoo” gaming cards. I love playing mostly First-person shooters, and I’m a die-hard fan of this FPS genre, since the good ‘old Doom and Wolfenstein days.
MUSIC has always been my passion/roots, but I started gaming “casually” when I was young on Nvidia’s GeForce3 series of cards. I’m by no means an avid or a hardcore gamer though, but I just love stuff related to the PC, Games, and technology in general. I’ve been involved with many indie Metal bands worldwide, and have helped them promote their albums in record labels. I’m a very broad-minded down to earth guy. MUSIC is my inner expression, and soul.

i’m tempted.
Don’t be, you know better. I have faith in you bro ?
i can sell my 8700k for a good price.
Then DO IT!!! Just Do It My friend, especially if you can get that off your hands.
For what it’s worth, I’m still rocking a 4’th GEN Intel Core i7 4790 (non-K) CPU.
damn, you have patience.
Yeah, but, no money to upgrade, lol.
🙁
you’re well informed, i’d start a youtube channel if i were you.
If you don’t have a motherboard with that socket, then no point in buying these now. They just want to clear the inventory, because they know these older gen products won’t sell very well in the coming years.
We already have Comet Lake in the Market.
9700k is still a great CPU, no reason not to go with it for gaming.
Uh, consoles that have 8C/16T CPU’s are about 3 months away. The 9700K is going to age like cottage cheese in the open sun since it has no hyperthreading. Also, the i7 10700K very close to that discounted price at some retailers, so it especially makes no sense in today’s market.
Low clock cpus. Keep that in mind
They’re clocked about 20% lower than the 3700X, that isn’t going to make a huge difference. They’ll also have lower overhead from the OS and background tasks, so developers will be able to get more out of those clocks than they would on a PC.
Xbox games will only turn off SMT for backwards compatibility, all new games will be using 8C/16T. Sony says the PS5 pretty much always maintains 3.5GHz (who knows if that’s true, but we’ll never be able to test it). The console developers will be able to program “closer to the metal” as they say, so I wouldn’t worry about a ~20% clock speed deficiency. Even with some cores being reserved for the OS’s, I would bet money that 6C/12T chips will hold up a lot better than this 8C/8T chip.
My point is that the 9700K won’t age well, and yes it is fine for today but the only people who already have one should be using it. No one should go out and buy one new.
Pricier + you need a new MOBO (oh classic Intel). For new purchasers, this is the truth tho. I would still wait for Zen 3 before making any moves obviously, hopefully stock will be enough this time.
My 7700k is still rolling right along with games but I don’t expect to hit the refresh rate of my 144 Hz monitor.
The price drop on the Flagship i9 Model seems a bit off. Is it really worth it ?
no wait another year.
No such price drop in Europe apparently.
Yeah, it appears this price cut currently reflects only in the US. But I expect Intel and retailers to extend this promo to other countries as well. including Europe, Australia, and rest of Asia as well.
We are actually almost at the price point of 9600K with 9600Kf. So that one makes little sense.
My local Microcenter has the i9 9900K for $380. If course, that’s kind of meaningless since they also have the i7 10700K for $350, but it’s worth it for those who already have a 300 series Intel MOBO with a weaker CPU.
10700 is $305 on Amazon, US.
Not worth it until there’s there’s a price cut on cpu coolers and ACs for your room as well
Trust, I own a 9900K myself.
You also live in Africa i bet.
I’m looking to upgrade from my 5820k.. should I stick with Intel? Wait for the new stuff? Go AMD? Things are so crazy at the moment.
You mean Motherboard, Z390 ? Btw, are they dropping Windows 7 OS support on newer/latest gen boards as well ?
My board’s Model number is MSI Z97S SLI KRAIT Edition. It supports Win 7.
Cool…Let me check it out.
still not worth, lol..
One word describes Intel…Desperation!
