NVIDIA has revealed the official Ray Tracing PC system requirements for Portal RTX. According to the reqs, PC gamers will at least need an Intel i7-6700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 with 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX3060.
For gaming at 1080p/High Settings with 60fps, NVIDIA recommends using an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 with DLSS 2. For 4K/Ultra Settings, the green team recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 with DLSS 3.
Portal RTX will release on December 8th. NVIDIA has provided us with an early code so expect some day-1 benchmarks!

Requiring an RTX 3080 to get 60fps at 1080p WITH DLSS on… I know it’s a free and all, but they really couldn’t optimize a bit more than this?
It’s full ray tracing. How have you not caught on that it’s very hard to do? Quake II is really hard to push why would Portal 2 be easier? There is nothing to optimize except your own expectations. This is the real deal full path tracing.
It’s at high settings though, not ultra, which means that there could be some potential compromises to how the RT is done for lower settings. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see exactly what settings are configurable and to what level.

Is this Nvidia exclusive? My 6800xt has been doing great in ray tracing games using the settings that make a noticeable difference only. Most effects suck in some games and you only need like 1-2 out of 3 enabled.

No. It will run on any card supporting DXR, but be warned that your 6800XT is ~50% of the performance of a 3080 in RT and doesn’t support DLSS.

AMD sponsored RT titles usually use very light RT effects. Shadows and maybe reflections. Any major GI or path tracing solutions are just too taxing for AMD’s hardware. Say what you want about Nvidia vs AMD, AMD is a solid 2 years behind Nvidia in RT

A 2080 Ti is about the same as a 3070 so it definitely meets the minimum requirements and with some tweaking could probably do 60 FPS at 1080p

Am I the only one who doesn’t like the look of the ray tracing in this game? I love Ray tracing and I think it looks great, but it just seems a little bit too in your face considering the tone of the game.

What do you mean exactly? I don’t think it looks overdone at all. Personally, I think it simply looks like Portal with properly functioning light sources for once. Always remember “tone” of games, especially from this generation were slaves to the limitations of the technology they had access to. I’m looking forward to experiencing this new take on the game. Just managed to nab a 4090 order this morning so I’m ready!
