Final Fantasy VI, one of the classic parts in the FF series, is now available on Steam and while this is basically a mobile port, one thing annoyed a lot of PC gamers. No no, that wasn’t the new art style. It was the f’ing annoying bilinear filter that was used. As a result of that, the game looked blurry as hell. Thankfully, Steam’s member ‘Nyxo’ has released a mod that removes it.
Those interested can download the mod from here.
Below you can find some comparison screenshots from Final Fantasy V (the effect is the same in VI, so this comparison will give you an idea of what this mod actually does). Bilinear Filter is enabled on the left and disabled on the right.

It looks more like FF V
Anyways, good old sprites or nothing
The art is still horrible. They should’ve just ported the SNES or GBA version.
“No no, that wasn’t the new art style.”
Yes it was John.
Damn the left version is really ugly.
i really think we are better off playing the emulated snes game
So true. As someone who was fortunate enough to get a brand new SNES copy when it first came out (I still have it, mint condition), the only true version of FFVI is the SNES version. This Steam version is a disgrace to the majesty of the game. Plus emulators let you fast-forward to skip all the archaic grinding!
and the same can be said for most of the FF pc ports. the original pc ports for 7 and 8 were awful (i was lucky to buy them for psx back in the day). also i heard the steam versions for these 2 games are terrible too with midi music and stuff like thtat.
certainly, square has always been awful at porting games to pc.
Well, at least the new Lightning Returns port is actually pretty decent, at a semi-stable 60 FPS, and the 1080p lock can be overcome through tweaking. So they are improving…slowly.
