Don’t expect the NVIDIA Ampere GPUs to be launched at GTC 2020 in March 2020

I wasn’t originally planning to publish this article. After all, we hadn’t over-hyped NVIDIA’s “you won’t be disappointed” claims about GTC 2020. However, and since some people believe that Ampere will come out in March 2020, I wanted to share my own thoughts. No, and as Igor’s Lab stated, the NVIDIA Ampere GPUs will not release in March 2020.

Igor’s Lab claims that whoever expects big, real existing bomb news regarding the Ampere GPUs will be disappointed. Like always, NVIDIA will most likely focus on AI and Deep Learning and Data Center at GTC 2020. There might be a teaser regarding Ampere, however, don’t expect anything mind-blowing.

This falls in line with what we’ve been hearing these past few months. Seriously, March 2020 is too early for an Ampere launch. Let’s not forget that NVIDIA launched its Turing GPUs in August 2018. In other words, a Gamescom 2020 launch event seems more likely about the Ampere GPUs.

Before closing, I should note that Igor’s Lab is a very reliable source. And again, a Gamescom 2020 Ampere event is the most likely scenario at this point. So yeah, don’t expect anything groundbreaking during GTC 2020. Truth be told, NVIDIA may drops some teasers. However, you should really temper your expectations. Unless of course NVIDIA surprises everyone (really doubtful right now, but who knows).

  1. The last time Nvidia attempted to launch a new GPU series in March, they had a massive shortage of cards in April and did not recover until sometime in May.

  2. if we look at history itself nvidia never release next gen geforce at GTC. but we most likely going to see nvidia to announced their GV100 successor at this event. and this is where it can get a bit complicated. GV100 might or might not going to give us the hint about next gen geforce. because with pascal launch at GTC 2016 (GP100) it did not give us even the slightest info how GTX1080 and the rest going to be. turns out GP100 end up being a different animal than the rest of nvidia pascal chip. but at GTC 2018 when nvidia showcase Quadro based turing for the first time it directly give us pretty much the exact info what to expect for geforce based turing.

and i don’t think launching Ampere right now count as “too early for” nvidia. maxwell was released in Q3 2014 but nvidia did not wait until Q3 2016 to launch pascal. my bet actually on Q2 this year. maybe Q3 this year if nvidia decided they want to milk turing a bit more.

  3. Nvidia is really worried by the next gen consoles. RTX was a desperate move, AMD gfx cards have been outclassed for a while RTX could have been far more well developed under the cover to launch briliantly.
Hear me out, Nvidia is working against the clock to make consoles look outdated, but they are really out of luck with the new RT solutions which will be far more efficient and optimized for AMD hardware, AMD is everywhere and the lack of RT on the first gen was not enough to get people on the Nvidia ecosystem. The driver problems seems to have been more effective, but consoles wull not have it. Add to that corona virus and the very high cost of nvidia cards because of their bigger chips… Devs are full AMD right now and switch is not changing that any soon. Code paths, engines, etc…
All been modified for console optimizations.

    1. “but they are really out of luck with the new RT solutions which will be far more efficient and optimized for AMD hardware”

just because console using AMD hardware means ray tracing will be faster on AMD hardware. RTX is just nvidia implementation for RT to be used in DX and vulkan based game. AMD will come forth with a solution that will be compliant with MS DXR. that’s all to it. the only thing that matter is how effective are each implementation of RT similar how it does with tessellation before.

        1. They don’t need to focus on PC right now, they have to establish their tentacles everywhere and then do a full swing to clean their mess, they are lacking manpower and money. AMD right now is on a bubble if you guys didn’t noticed, stability comes with a lot of money and a lot of areas covered, Intel soon will bring their needle to explode AMD, this is coming from someone who actually prefers AMD over Intel and Nvidia, but the reality is that AMD has a chance now to establish itself well enough to be able to take hits and still keep growing.
The graphics card market on the PC side is basically one of the more stable markets AMD has, drivers problems are quickly dismissed or forgotten, anyone who is at this industry at least for 20 years knows the dynamics of it.
AMD will try to generate dependence of their clients on them for the future expanding their approach and total ecosystem makes them able to direct to where the market will be pushed before everyone, so more power to change the landscape, once a company is that powerful you can assume that they will not evaporate unless something really wrong happens. Hence why Intel even with all the major losses and wrong doings are not that worried.

  4. March is a little too early. I expect them to start releasing 2nd quarter of this year at the earliest. I expect Ampere will offer a nice boost in performance over Turing. Possibly 40%-50%

Only bad thing I see coming is higher prices though.

      1. Nothing like that. Huang has reported that Turing sales didn’t meet expectations a while back before the Super GPUs came out for less money than the originals probably due to the big price increase for the original Turings.

Prices like $1,400 for the 3080 Ti or $900 for a 3080 non-TI or $700 for a 3070 would seriously hurt their sales to gamers. I just think there will be a price increase but more along the lines of $50 to $100 depending on the model.

    1. Hey 6K, what’s up ? Good to see your comment after a long time. Been busy these days, as you don’t post that often ?

Even I’ve been kind of absent from DSOG and other tech/gaming websites. Stuck with my personal life issues and whatnot…

      1. Thanks. Yeah I was visiting this site regularly for years as it was the only PC gaming site that wasn’t blocked at work but something changed last year and DSOG started getting blocked at work too. I still logon sometimes from home but nowhere near as much as I used to.

        1. BTW, why was a simple Gaming site like DSOG blocked in the first place ? It seems they might be having some very strict rules and restrictions in your office. A bit strange though.

Maybe try to use a VPN of some sort to bypass any ban, but obviously, assuming this is allowed to do at work, and it can be easily done to overcome the block.

Because if there is some other reason for the block, then even using a VPN won’t work though..

          1. I work in administration for a Public School system and we are on the same servers as the kids in the schools which have access to the internet. The IT dept blocks any sites which may have adult content like gaming sites, twitter, facebook etc. For some reason DSOG wasn’t flagged as a gaming site for years but now they are. I can occasionally still access this site at work but most of the time it’s blocked.

I suppose there are ways around it but I don’t want to draw attention to myself from the IT dept. for accessing a blocked site.

  5. Of course, duh. At least not for consumers market, if they ever going to unveil something there, it probably is a Tesla card.
