CryEngine V Announced – Launched With “Pay What You Want” Business Model, Supports DX12

Crytek has announced the next version of its amazing game engine, CryEngine V. CryEngine V has been launched today with a “Pay What You Want” business model, offering developers everywhere total access to the engine’s feature-set and full engine source code for a fee of their choosing, and with no obligation to pay royalties or additional service charges.

Crytek’s Founder, CEO & President, Cevat Yerli, said:

“CRYENGINE V represents our commitment to not only offering developers today’s most advanced engine technology, but also to making it as accessible as possible. The arrival of CRYENGINE Marketplace, the revamped engine UI, and new support channels will make it easier than ever to tap into the power of CRYENGINE – at a price that feels comfortable for each and every individual. Community is at the heart of our Pay What You Want Model, which we hope will foster closer collaboration between us and developers as well as developers amongst themselves.”

Here are some of the key features of CryEngine V:

  • C# Enabled: A new API that allows developers who know C# to start scripting in CRYENGINE V right away.
  • Reworked Low Overhead Renderer: Significantly increases the performance of today’s hardware in graphically intensive applications.
  • DirectX 12 support: Utilize the latest branch of DirectX to take greater control of hardware resources.
  • Advanced Volumetric Cloud System: Optimized for VR to give clouds full 3D spatial rendering for higher quality with minimal performance hit.
  • New particle system: Create stunning real-time fluid effects, handled almost entirely on the GPU.
  • A new launcher and UI: Navigate CRYENGINE more intuitively thanks to a streamlined UI which includes realigned features and new icon groupings.
  • FMOD Studio support: Allowing greater flexibility in audio middleware selection.
  • CRYENGINE Answers: A dedicated channel where the CRYENGINE community can share questions and answers.

  1. Where is IV? o.0

Edit: Oh, so they rebranded the 3.6 to just “CryEngine” according to the wikipedia.
And now they went back to the numbered ones.

  2. Borderline free usage and C# functionality? Sounds like they want people to cross over from Unity. Interesting move! Basically, they are admitting failure to compete with Unreal for the traditional big budget devs, and have acquired a new target. CryEngine looks and runs better than Unity, obviously, so it all comes down to convincing people that they are indeed as “accessible” as they say they are. Will they release tutorials like Unity does? Will they have similar community events? So many questions.

    1. Just pray this move means they’re finally waking up to what people want from them, & they’ll finally release a Crysis HD Trilogy on “CryEngine V” in order to showcase its true potential.

Or even just a Crysis 4 that’s basically just Crysis OG in UHD.

CryEngine Launcher + Marketplace though, sounds more like they’re imitating Unreal 4 than Unity, but we’ll see. Maybe they’re aiming for a “middle ground” between the two.

      1. I’m sure they would love to test the waters with a Crysis collection for Xbone and PS4. Ryse is only on Xbone so there’s no CE game on PS4 really pushing the envelope. They will inevitably do *something* for PS4 and a collection like this would be convenient. But EA owns the Crysis brand and I don’t think Crytek are ever working with EA again.

        1. Just the Publishing Rights, technically, but yeah, they’d have to partner up with them unless they can buy them back.

We’ll see I guess. If nothing else, they seem to have moved away from their “F2P focus” strategy they had back then after Crysis 3 at least.

      2. ” release a Crysis HD Trilogy ”

As far as i am concerned there is only one crysis game and a better expansion. Crysis 2 was a anathema to crysis and crysis 3 was meh.

        1. Agreed, though from a financial standpoint (& technically speaking) they could get away with very little work on Crysis 3, & only “so much” work on Crysis 2, so financially it would make more sense to do all 3.

Otherwise, yeah, I’d rather have Crysis + Warhead + Wars than Crysis Campaign, Warhead Campaign, Crysis 2 & Crysis 3 in a Remastered Pack.

    1. Curious, since they’re an AMD Partner & AMD did Mantle, which went into Vulkan.

Or maybe it’s just not ready yet, even Unreal 4 only added Vulkan VERY recently.

      1. I do hope they support it in the end, it serves to help more people not sporting 10 to have their games on other OS’s with equal perf gains.

        1. Found something;

          “TRUE MULTI-PLATFORM SUPPORT

          Linux PC

Giving consumers the choice to play where they want to

The rise of indie development has brought with it a new golden age of PC gaming – no matter which operating system you use. By supporting Linux and OpenGL, CRYENGINE gives indie and AAA developers alike the choice to engage their audience where they want to.”

So yeah, should only be a matter of time.

      1. Some are but It would also pay for journos to keep bringing up Vulkan news than focusing only on DX 12.

    2. I dunno, Crytek have fallen from grace for a pretty long while and they dabbled with consoles, once most devs dabble with consoles they hardly ever go back to being PC exclusive and that’s the sad part because it means they love the money more than the games and the visuals themselves. Star Citizen is practically the only visual PC only game I’m looking forward to as Ark has been slowed down considerably thanks to Xbox’s version of early access slowing them down and showing optimization right out the window and then we have Kingdom Come Deliverance which has the devs under a publishers thumb in delaying the PC version until the consoles release.

Some often say that consoles don’t hold PC gaming back and yet I’m seeing a completely different story each time I hear news like with Ark and KCD.

  3. Their registration server has been broken ever since launch and nobody can download the engine. Complete and utter farce.
