Blizzard appears to be working on a new unannounced first-person game

It appears that Blizzard is currently working on a new unannounced first-person game. According to a job listing, Blizzard is seeking engineers for an unannounced project in a first-person engine.

As the description of Blizzard’s job listing reads:

“Blizzard Entertainment is seeking an experienced engine engineer to work on a robust first-person engine for an unannounced project. The ideal applicant has demonstrated ability to lead a team of engineers to success, has a vision for how a scalable, performant and technically excellent engine should be built, and has a passion for adopting state of the art rendering technology to implement visually stunning games.”

The only first-person title that Blizzard has developed so far is Overwatch. So, it will be interesting to see what this new first-person engine – and its unannounced project – is all about.

It remains to be seen whether this unannounced project is for one of Blizzard’s already established franchises or not.

    1. They would build it in UE. Think about all the work they would have to repeat for no gain. Two things: This game will come out MANY years from now, and it will be significantly different from all existing Blizzard games or they would use their existing tech as a foundation.

      1. “they would use their existing tech as a foundation.”

That’s why I think that they will be going for Overwatch campaign or something related to that universe, it makes sense to do something to “keep the brand strong” and expand their universe to attract people that aren’t interested on the MP. They can even provide post launch content in the form of character backstories and what not.

Of course, I’m just talking out of my bottom here, but with the recent cancellation of the novel for story reasons it kind makes some weird sense to expand their universe with maybe a single player/campaign game to complement the other media that they already have.

A lot of people are found of the characters, they can even make something small out of it and profit.

        1. My bets would be on a co-op story expansion. At Blizzcon they said the recent PvE event was a surprisingly successful test for PvE interest & that PvE content is in their comfort zone since they’re a team full of ex-WoW developers.

          1. I wasn’t saying they would change it, I was saying they would use the Overwatch engine. :v

          2. Okay. Here’s my problem:

“has a vision for how a scalable, performant and technically excellent engine should be built”

That part sounded to me like they want to develop their own engine for this game, not tweak UE slightly. They already have people working on UE and doing fine with it. Whoever made Overwatch run on all three relevant platforms. The game looks and runs fine so why hire new people for that? I don’t think so. I think they’re creating an engine from scratch.

          3. Yeah, that may be right, IMO it would be kinda crazy to dump money into a new engine just for the sake of having it.
But then again, they still have all that WoW and now Overwatch money, we’ll see what comes in the future.

          4. Certainly not for the sake of it. A good reason to develop a custom engine could be that the game is projected for a release many, many years down the line and they want to pioneer new rendering methods. For contrast, UE4 is a great deal now if you want to launch a game soon. We’re surely not going to be using those disgusting hack shadows in ten years, for instance. Could be that Blizzard want to make a graphics powerhouse (other parts of the listing sound like it) and UE4 is kind of bloated already. Building far future games on top of current UE would mean gutting large portions of it, at which point why not write from scratch?

          5. Because of their release model, building a whole engine to dump big games every 5+ years or so, don’t seem the way Blizzard do things, unless they want to change the way they develop their games, then a new engine from scratch would make total sense.

          6. Can’t make more clear than my previous comments. :v

Engines cost money. They usually take sweet time to develop games. It seems kinda risky. But they have money to take risks.

I’m just thinking that maybe they could change the “taking sweet time part” with this effort into a new engine, because IMO it seems “off”, in the business sense, to spend loads of money developing a new engine taking so much time “not using it” (i.e. taking sweet time developing games).

  1. Huh. This, again?

They’ve been hiring people for a “first person” project on & off for the last 6+ years. As I recall, originally it was just them trying different things in their mad quest to make a new WoW Game (in regards to its financial success) (Project Titan), from which Overwatch eventually resulted instead, so what this is now, I have no idea.

Maybe they’ve decided to rip off Destiny &/or Fallout next? >.>

    1. There new project is going to called “Project C&P”
Essentially, they have developed a new technology that can copy and paste on a quantum level. Overwatch was the first successful alpha test; as you can see it should and shouldn’t exist in my game library.

    1. Would be great, but never going to happen. For one thing, it can’t run in parallel to World of Moneycraft, & for another, it’ll probably just be a bad Starcraft 2 clone, so in a way we’re kind-of better off without it, sadly, unfortunately.

      1. they could easily do it if they wanted to be a bit less greedy, imo, they could release another expansion for wow and be done with it and if im not wrong sc2 expansions are over? if so then then replace it with warcraft 4

        1. I’m not sure what they intend with WoW. The last Content Patch for Legion seems like it could be setup for a “Final Chapter” follow-up Expansion, but there’s also other hints throughout recent content that indicates they may be planning a Northrend Revamp + Nerubian Kingdom War (& by extension, most likely also the final Old God, N’zoth, at long last), whereas there’s also a chance that whole Void Lords storyline they asspulled during Warlords of Draenor will lead to another continent on the other side of Azeroth, which like so many others before it “was previously hidden from us” or some such bullsh*t.

During its 10th Anniversary they said they saw WoW having a 20th Anniversary, & they’ve been reiterating their dedication to Annualized Expansion Packs as of either late 2015, or early 2016 (I forget), so hell if I know. Either way, I doubt they’re going to abandon the game until it drops below 500K subscriptions, & even then, who knows. Current estimates put them at 4 million subscriptions (since they no longer report official numbers in order to save themselves the constant humiliation), so the die-hard Cult of Blizzard sycophants might actually succeed in keeping that particular boat afloat for a few more years (unfortunately).

Yes Starcraft 2 is “done”, & so is Diablo, most likely, by this point – at least in theory. There’s some indication that they might be planning Diablo 4 based on how 3 ended (or maybe it’s World of Diablo? Hell if I know), but either way Starcraft 2 has been declared officially “over” (until the eventual reboot, at least, I suppose). As for Warcraft 4; unless something truly MAJOR changes in their internal structure (or they tank World of Trollcraft too soon), the only way I can see Warcraft 4 happening is either through a full-scale Warcraft RTS reboot, or through some kind of alterverse tale, ala-Turdblossoms of Draenor.

Hell, they haven”t even remastered Warcraft 1-3 yet, so I doubt they have any short-term intentions of revisiting the series in any way, shape, or form, currently.

  2. It’ll take forever for it to come out and it’s got to appeal to absolutely everyone, that way they can do what Blizzard always do and constantly change the meta every few weeks and months. This in turns shoves out the early buyers and brings in new ones, then brings in the old to spend more money before shoving them out for new players to sink more money.

I wish the Blizzard of old was still here, we’d maybe even get an actual exclusive RTS like we used to.

  3. Pretty sure it will be a 60$ rip off of another F2P game and, of course, with the Blizzard marketing it will be a huge success.

  4. People will say that much like Valve, Blizzard is a MP company nowadays, but I agree. People also didn’t think Blizzard would ever make a FPS. They’ve proven they can do FPS, why not singleplayer FPS?
