Bethesda has officially removed Denuvo from the Steam version of RAGE 2

Man, what a roller coaster this has been. While testing the review code, we’ve discovered that Avalanche has implemented the Denuvo anti-tamper tech in RAGE 2 (even though Bethesda hadn’t listed Denuvo on the game’s Steam store page). This, obviously, frustrated a lot of PC gamers who felt cheated by the publisher.

Not only that, but the Bethesda store version did not use this controversial anti-tamper tech, something that puzzled a lot of gamers. However, here we are today with Bethesda completely removing Denuvo from the Steam version too.

According to the release notes, the first PC patch for RAGE 2 removes the Denuvo DRM, enables Crash Reporter for error reporting, fixes occasional crash related to Scaleform and crashes on startup, as well as an issue where Bethesda.net users would always default to English.

We’ve tested the Denuvo-free version and while the game loads faster now, there is no noticeable performance differences between the Denuvo and the Denuvo-free versions.

As always, Steam will download this patch the next time you launch its client, and you can find its complete changelog below.

      1. They just trying to throw sand at gamers eyes, the same way Bethesda always claiming their games won’t be exclusive to the Epic Store, but force us to use a Bethesda account to play their games on Steam.

Or even the fact the game has Micro-transactions.

  1. All the people who pirated this game because Denuvo or flocking to Steam to buy the game now, right? Right?

    1. I did, just got on steam after reading the news, played the pirated version for two days, liking the game a lot.

    2. I’ve not pirated the game but might do so now due to your usual obnoxiously self-righteous and morally superior smug attitude. Cheers.

        1. “probably a leftist as well.”
why am i not surprised that this comes out of the most mentally challenged person on dsog?

      1. I’m downloading right now as we speak. I was good gamer for 15 years, haven’t pirated anything since 2004 and now because of all these anti-consumer practices, I’ll pirate every God Damn Denuvo & Epic Hostage Games. Don’t give a flying Schitt what idiots like the OP says. He can go fuq his self-righteous self.

      2. Lmao all you needed was the slightest excuse to pirate a game.

There’s plenty of good reasons to pirate a game. This is not one of them.

That fact that this is the reason you chose is telling.

          1. Fine. Prove me wrong. Buy the game (or don’t, up to you, as long as you don’t pirate it).

          2. Fine, indeed.

Nobody cares for your opinions and demands so, in common with the obnoxious dirthurts, you may wish to dial back on your unwarranted sense of self-importance.

          3. It wasn’t a demand. I explicitly said “or don’t, it’s up to you”

Funny how someone who thinks they’re entitled to playing videogames whether they can afford it or not is lecturing people on “dialing back their self-importance”

          4. Check your reading comprehension.

            Nice straw man.

You’re failing hard with everything you say. gg

          5. If you think that’s a straw man it’s clear you have no idea what it is. Might want to brush up on your fallacies.

        1. I don’t know about that but PB’s conduct here at DSOG for some time now suggests he has a mental health issue. I won’t be wasting any further time entertaining his nonsense.

    3. I have a backlog that would take me a couple of years to pile through but, yes I will most likely buy Rage 2 sooner or later. The chance of me doing that before the removal of Denuvo was 0 %.

    1. mister KIM assured me he will double his efforts to battle piracy and pirate rats and he mentioned this changes nothing other than making him and his team more committed than ever before. he also told me to call you pathetic pirate losers but i will not do that because mister KIM has a peaceful nature and i don’t want you to go around and accuse him of insulting others.

  2. Will be very interesting to see performance comparisons with Denuvo and without.

Bethesda have made some really bad decisions (Creation Club, FO4 VR, Skyrim VR, FO76 made with real Bethesda leather, etc.), but hats off to them for listening to valid complaints against Denuvo. I hope they keep listening to the PC community going forward.

    1. This might not be a good indicator because sometimes patches include perf tweaks. RE 2 showed that Denuvo hits performance for 11-20 fps

    2. They didn’t listen to anyone. they say that, but their version got cracked without Denuvo, and they decided to just remove it from the Steam version. had nothing to do with the consumers or performance issues (though there really isn’t one these day).

  3. Basically they threw money out of the window for Denuvo and they don’t even use it, best financial decision… Bethesda logic strikes again.

  4. Has Bethesda also removed the mandatory requirement for a bethesda(dot)account in order to access the Steam version’s DLC that they disgracefully remained totally silent about until 24 hours prior to launch?

          1. Hmm, not cool, dude. Those with physical and/or mental impairment have done nothing to warrant being associated with a cretin like KIM.

          2. Cool. On a lighter note, I look forward to KIM ranting about piracy of Epic Store games because then he’ll be Kim Sweeney, lol!

  5. Today, Bethesda manages to make one single good and logical decision.

While this may seem like faint praise at first, just stop and think about how many developers actually remove Denuvo when it gets cracked, not many.

    1. Denuvo wasn’t cracked in this case. The Bethesda Launcher version was cracked, and it never contained Denuvo. Only the Steam version had it, until now, and it isn’t cracked.

    1. Mediocre reviewer with a bell. inconstancy in all of his reviews. he hates mechanic A and B in one game, he loves the same mechanic in some other game. talking about good old games and how bad the new ones are but shilling for every other Ubisoft/EA game that was release in past two years.

        1. Well, Gameplay is not that good but Gunplay (some part of the gameplay) sure. Design, those repetitive open world trops, mission structure, characters etc… all below average tho.

  6. the game is as enjoyable as the first rage

gun mechanics,AI and variety of ammos

the first rage was the only game that i used all my weapons with all their special ammo
i think the same applies here

  7. now when are the not so friendly folks over at WB games gonna remove ye olde Denuvo from Mortal Kombat 11….
