APEX Legends surpasses 70 million players, Steam version will not require the Origin client

Electronic Arts has announced that APEX Legends has surpassed 70 million players. APEX Legends is a free to play shooter that is a huge commercial success for both EA and Respawn. Moreover, Respawn has confirmed that the Steam version will not require the Origin client.

As Respawn’s developer said when asked about the Steam version of APEX Legends.

“Not true. Your games will launch directly with Steam without running Origin.”

This is great news for everyone as PC gamers expected all the Steam versions of EA’s games to behave similarly to those from Ubisoft. In case you weren’t aware of, all of Ubisoft’s Steam games are using UPLAY by default (so basically you have two launchers working when playing these games). Respawn claims that this won’t be the case with APEX Legends. Naturally, we also expect full cross-play between the Origin and the Steam versions of APEX Legends.

In unrelated news, EA announced its preliminary financial results for its second fiscal quarter ended September 30, 2019. According to the report, The Sims 4 monthly average players are up more than 40% year-over-year. Furthermore, the number of FIFA Ultimate Team™ unique players increased 22% year-over-year. PC gaming also saw a 62% Year-over-Year increase.
