Valve has announced that all the major Half-Life games are currently free to play until Half-Life: Alyx releases. As such, PC gamers can go ahead and download these classic first-person shooters and play them for free.
Do note that this is a free to play and not a free to own offer. Therefore, you can only play the old Half-Life games for free until Half-Life: Alyx comes out.
The games that are currently available for free download are: Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half Life: Episode One and Half-Life Episode Two. Unfortunately, Half-Life: Blue Shift and Half-Life Opposing Force are not included in this free to play offer.
Valve has also re-confirmed that Half-Life: Alyx will come out in March 2020. The game is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and the episodes, but the games share characters and story elements. Thus, the developers believe that the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones.

Maybe you should just try and buy a used vr headset. It’s not like it’s going to be any fun to play without vr or be possible. You do know that vr is incredible and immersive and completely different than mouse and keyboard right? Or are you just afraid of new things?

Half-Life is a love-hate thing, it’s not that widely beloved as GTA or Quake or TES. Meaning, % of those who played and liked it is lower than in many other games.
Love-hate thing? Uhh no? It’s not a love-thing hate because some bigger series are more popular than it. Almost all old-school gamers love HL. There is a reason why HL2 is one of the most popular and beloved games of all time. And i can tell you for a fact that only a small minority of gamers actually hates HL. And most of them are probably underage. As for GTA and Quake, i doubt Quake is more popular than HL, let alone CS (the game born from HL). And GTA was always a controversial game, which made it even more main stream to a larger audience.
My plan was already to replay all Half-Life games in release order before Half-Life: Alyx. Just finished Half-Life 1 a couple days ago and just started Half-Life: Opposing Force yesterday.
I did the same. Played HL1 and Blue Shift, but Opposing Force is bugged for me. It keeps kicking me tot the main menu at the start of a chapter. Guess i’ll have to restart it completly.

That’s life bro. Outside of the USA PC gaming is more expensive for just about everyone. Even in Western coutnriees like the AUS, UK, and CAN, they have to pay more for most parts. Most parts of the world people can’t even begin to afford gaming PCs. Just remember, if you make more than about $35,000 USD, you are in the top 1% in terms of global wealth. Thats A LOT of people that can’t even afford to play GTAV on a PC. (Don’t belive me about the top 1%? Just google “Are You in the World’s Top 1 Percent?” )
