Painkiller fans, get ready for a treat. Modder ‘capzor’ has released a demo for his RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod for Painkiller. This demo adds Path Tracing support to the first four levels of the game with upscaled PBR textures.
To showcase this RTX Remix Path TRacing Mod, capzor shared the following video. This video shows off the four levels that have been enhanced. As such, it can give you an idea of what you can expect from it.
You can go ahead and download the mod from this link. As capzor said, the mod is compatible with both the GOG and Steam versions of Painkiller: Black Edition.
Since we’ll never get a remaster or a remake of the first Painkiller game, this is a must for all of its die-hard fans. And, as you will see, it looks pretty dope.
Now in case the game looks a bit darker to some, there is a new flashlight you can enable. All you have to do is press ESC (while you are in-game) to get to the menu. Then, press ALT+X to bring up RTX Remix settings and go to developer settings. Go to Game Setup tab, then to the “Parameter Tuning” tab, expand “Fallback Lighting” and change it to “Always On”. And there you have it.
In 2024, we shared a lot of RTX Remix Mods for various games. In January 2023, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider 2, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Then, in February 2024, we shared videos for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Unreal, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and Midnight Club 2. In March 2024, we also shared the first screenshots from the RTX Remix Mod for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Finally, you can check out some early RTX Remix videos and screenshots for Fallout: New Vegas, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, COD 2, and Half-Life.
Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for NFS: Underground and Underground 2. Oh, and don’t forget to give a go at this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. In September 2024, we also shared a new version of the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne. Finally, you can download Path Tracing Mods for Doom, Doom 2, Quake, and Serious Sam.
I now hope that we’ll get more polished RTX Remix Mods for some of the games we’ve already covered. From what I’ve seen, there aren’t any updates for the Splinter Cell RTX Remix and Manhunt. That’s a bummer as Splinter Cell is a game I’d love to play with Path Tracing. So, here is hoping that we’ll get something in 2025.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

"Since we’ll never get a remaster or a remake of the first Painkiller game"
There's an existing UE3 remaster of Painkiller made by The Farm 51 called Hell & Damnation, it lacks some content but it is indeed technically a remaster
"there is a new flashlight you can enable"
Vanilla already has a flashlight
LOL…yeah same here buddy. Cant get away from them!
just when intel starts winning me over, nvidia pulls me back in.
Looking good so far.
It looks… old but path-traced… not in the best way, like it can't escape being ugly.
It looks almost clay or plastic like, like the GTA definitive edition remasters.
Adding PBR into old games does not always give the best results.
Nah wait, this doesn't have PBR done properly, it's just some 'flat specular' reflection on the floor that makes it look terrible and no specularity anywhere else, that's it.
Exact same 'flat specular' texture happened in GTA Definitive on characters, and it looked like crap, and they removed it now.
BUT when PBR is done right and properly, it works magic into anything.
Original Painkiller still looks great to this day. Which cannot be said about other games from that era, like Doom 3. That game aged like milk.
Nope doom3 still looks damn amazing.
Only after you mod the f*cking sh*t out of it.
Wrong even with simple character model smooth off mod looks fine.
I would have loved some before/after comparison, because as a veeeery old granny, I don't remember the game looking different from this… lol
Like many people, nowadays, when I see a modded game, my first thought is always "huh? It didn't already look like this?"😅
Well, in my defense, I didn't play Painkiller since 20 years…
I love how a well placed shotgun blast "turns off" gravity.
Quite a transformation.
