Baldur’s Gate 3 4K/Ultra Screenshots & Early PC Performance Impressions

Larian Studios has released Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam Early Access. Since the team has provided us with a review code, we’ve decided to capture and share some 4K/Ultra screenshots. We’ll be also sharing some early PC performance impressions of it.

In order to capture the following screenshots, we used an Intel i9 9900K with 16GB of DDR4 at 3600Mhz. Naturally, we’ve paired this machine with an NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti. We also used Windows 10 64-bit and the latest version of the GeForce drivers. We’ve also included MSI Afterburner in our screenshots in order to give you an idea of the in-game performance.

The Early Access build of Baldur’s Gate 3 supports both the Vulkan and DX11 APIs. However, we were unable to enable 4K resolutions on our 1440p with Vulkan. With DX11, we had no trouble at all enabling higher resolutions than our native one.

Baldur’s Gate 3 ran with more than 60fps at all times during its first levels. The game was using around 4GB of VRAM, and it appeared to be using three-four of our CPU cores/threads. It will be great if Larian Studios further optimizes its title. Still, and in its current state, the game can run in 4K/Ultra settings with more than 60fps on high-end GPUs.

Baldur’s Gate 3 uses the Divinity 4.0 Engine, an enhanced version of the engine that Larian used in Divinity: Original Sin 2. Thankfully, the game sports great graphics, even in this Early Access state. All characters are highly detailed, and there are some really cool environmental effects. Unfortunately, we did spot some shortcomings. Characters do not cast shadows in “dark” places, and there are some low-resolution textures here and there. Still, and for the most part, the game looks great.

It will be interesting to see how the final build will perform on both AMD’s and NVIDIA’s hardware. Naturally, we’ll have a proper PC Performance Analysis once the game leaves Early Access. Until then, enjoy the following screenshots!

  1. I’m surprised that a Western developer is releasing a game in current year with somewhat attractive women in it (low bar for sure, but at least it’s something). Contrast this with The Outer Worlds where 95% of the women look like bull dykes with mental deficiencies.

      1. Oh, please stop.

Most western games have unattractive women on purpose and you know it.

The whole idea that beauty is some completely subjective thing with no grounds in reality is something so stupid only modern men can believe it.

        1. Oh please, claiming that all men have the same preferences is something so very stupid.

By the way, the idea of female beauty has changed countless times throughout history.

          1. What makes you think I don’t know preferences exist?

A preference would be some aspect of beauty is noticed more strongly by some people while some other aspects are noticed more by other people.

What you are arguing for is essentially that beauty doesn’t exist, at least apart from some subjective view that has no basis in reality.

Saying that the idea of beauty has changed hardly proves your point. Some wierd stuff happaned in history sure but what most people in history thought was beautiful would still considered beautiful by most people.

          2. “what most people in history thought was beautiful would still considered beautiful by most people”

I beg to differ. Beauty standards changed throughout history, and for centuries they varied significantly by culture.

          3. I don’t think they actually honestly think that is beauty.

They just destroy everything that is good and it just so happens that female beauty is a part of “everything”.

          4. Or maybe fat was beautiful because it meant a higher chance of survival in those very tough paleolithic times?
How about scarification? Does it turn you on, do you find it attractive? In some cultures they do.
            Or how about foot-binding?
Don’t extrapolate from your own feelings and preferences to those of people living in very different times and places.

Do you like huge breasts? I don’t, but some guys do. Now we are back to the beginning of this discussion.

      2. i once got a jumpscare from a *woman * from the game called prey (latest prey) she was utterly defenition of ugly!

    1. Guessing the blond was a player-made character. Huge tats. I’m sure they had to adjust that chain shirt.

    1. I’ve not played the first two Baldur Gates, but at least the music in this game while walking around in one of the initial areas does feel like I’m playing something in the Divinity world. Doesn’t help that it also starts out at a beach after the introduction level like DoS 1 and 2. Still, DoS 1 and 2 were great, this will probably be good as well.

      1. They just complain because its turn based not because a developer made a similar game to their last game.
If they made a copy of Baldur Gate 2 and changed almost nothing they would praise it.

        1. Nah, people complain because Larian sucks and the Divinity games are low quality. The artwork sucks, the character design is stupid and kid friendly. Doesn’t matter if you bump it up to 8k, you’re still just getting a shiny pos with shabby storylines, bad jokes and an ultimately shabby experience.

All of which doesn’t really matter though, because even with the D&D license the game won’t make a 3rd of what it would have if it were Real time w pause, which everyone who liked the BG series wanted.

          1. Okay I can agree that the artwork isn’t the best and I would hardly call the story good. But then again the story isn’t a strong point for games in general. If you want a truly good story read a good book.

The great gameplay and RPG mechanics is what makes these games great and I get that some people don’t like turn based but yeah, thats just a preference – and thats my point.

        2. To be honest, I play RPGs for the story and could care less about how the gameplay is done, but still feels like it’s a little too similar to the Divinity games. But, again, not going to stop me from playing it because they do make good games (the full voice acting in particular is great).

          1. To be honest, I play RPGs for the story and could care less about how the gameplay is done

Two things wrong about this statement. Here we go:

            1) If you play RPGs for the story then you’re doing it wrong and you chose the wrong genre. “Playing” games for the story usually conjures up interactive movies like Last of Us in my mind as well as other Naughty Dog crap games but unfortunately that trend has been extending to other games with the abundance of those cutscenes and increasing deprivation of player control/agency.

            2) If you could care less then it means you somewhat care. It’s “I couldn’t care less” which is correct and not the other way around. It literally means you care so little that it is impossible for you to care any less.

          2. 1) Sorry, I should say all the character interaction and choices you get to make in those stories, not something that’s an option in pure story-driven games.
            2) Right, couldn’t care less, not could care less.
