Hangar 13 recently released a new update for Mafia 3, therefore we decided to re-test the game and see whether this update packed any performance improvements at all. And surprisingly enough, Mafia 3 runs noticeably better on NVIDIA’s hardware with this new patch.
We’ve tested a number of scenes and as you can see, for the most part we were getting around 11-15% better performance with this latest update.
Pre-patch screenshots are on the left, whereas post-patch screenshots are on the right.
We did also notice some lighting changes (as you can see in the last comparison above).
We should note, however, that the game still suffers from the CPU issues we reported in our PC Performance Analysis article.
As we can see below, in crowded places, the game is unable to take proper advantage of multiple threads, resulting in underwhelming performance.
Still, the game does run better than its initial release, so at least that’s something!

Keep up the good work and I just might buy it in some Steam sale in 2017.
In the 2nd last comparison the pre-patch looks so much better. Does the game have a night and day system? Maybe that’s why the post-patch looks worse (IMO)
Open world games which have a night and day system are very annoying to do comparisons with
I think the weather was just cloudy in that screenshot so it looked like there weren’t any shadows.
Kinda late, should have been a day 1 patch.
Could not agree more with ya. By now most of their loyal fanbase finished and uninstalled the game. I for one don’t think ill put this crap on my SSDs ever again no matter what dlc and fixes they bring.
that’s -55 percent performance improvements for you AMD folks out there
Couldn’t agree more.
they didnt even compare AMD, so there might be some improvement on AMD too.
its not just bad performance i heard the game is pretty boring and repetitive
Yep and you can’t fix that with patches.
yes you can. You can break it even more. So people will remember this game as a poorly optimized title rather than a mediocre experience.
Um, I think you can’t fix with patches what essentially is the whole game – boring and repetitive. That was the whole point of the game for brainwashed audience that loves politically correct black main character in a game called Mafia.
Ye finished it a month ago. Ending is alright but overall a bland experience. Not even half the game what Mafia 2 was.
and it looks terrible, check videos about mirrors, water reflection, and “Christmas trees”
How about you get some amd hardware and do a proper comparison…
its better than gta 5. it has more realistic weapons and weapon impacts, way better stealth, better driving, better takedowns, brutal takedowns. And clay is awesome, you can feel his brutality and his military background in every move and gesture he makes. Sure gta 5 has a more modern story, online, better graphics maybe but overall i think mafia 3 does some things better and is in no way bad
Oh dear, if this article happened to be more popular you would’ve get a lot of replies. xD
Any number of replies could not change the reality of what i stated above.
That’s not how you spell “opinion”.
Anyone knows the patch number?
This game doesn’t hold much in the way of replayability at all. I did a run through and the main story was well crafted, but the game world was pretty bare bones. It became increasingly clear they either ran out of time or money. The protagonist literally wore the same outfit through out the entire game when it first launched, which is definitely not the standard for these type of games. There where nice cars, but no personalization, like you couldn’t pick or change the colors.
Taking down a district was fun the first couple of times, but eventually the tasks all started to look carbon copied. This is all stuff that is pretty standard across the board for 3rd person sandbox titles, not just the king like GTA, but stuff you’d find in Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row and even in Watch Dogs.
So while I think it’s cool they added more outfits now, and will be adding car customization it just comes off as a bit too little too late.
what patch? checked steam,no patch what so ever 🙂 game still broken.
“Hangar 13 recently released a new update” the patch is 1-2 weeks old, so this is misleading.
Also that 11%? Those screens are measuring fps in calm scens,in doors when nothing is happening, goo to city where are NPC’s, traffic, etc then check fps.
Here on 1070 I got 3-5fps more still can’t get 60fps on max. settings in city drops to low 40’s even sometimes to 30s.
No matter how much you try to cotton-wrap this turd, it’s still gonna be a turd….
