Quantum Break – Win10 version will not receive any new patches, DX11 support unlikely coming to it

Yesterday, we informed you about Quantum Break coming to Steam. This Steam version will be a Win32 application and will support both DX11 and DX12. Naturally, we wondered whether Remedy would add support for DX11 in Quantum Break’s Win10 version (that is currently sold via Windows Store). And according to Remedy’s Head of Communications, Thomas Puha, that seems unlikely.

As Thomas said when he was asked Sabin Figaro complained about the game’s performance issues.

So there you have it everyone. It appears that Remedy will focus on the Win32 version of Quantum Break (instead of the already released UWP version). Still, it’s kind of sad that there won’t be support for DX11 in the Win10 version.

What’s also interesting here is that Remedy has been working on this Win32 version of Quantum Break for a while. Not only that, but Quantum Break may, actually, run better under DX11.

  1. Looks like Microsoft and Remedy have completely parted ways after the sales disaster of Quantum Break.

      1. Of course they are, they own Quantum Break but Remedy won’t be working with Microsoft on their future projects. This is probably their last collaborative effort.

        1. Yes, but they still could have stuck to their guns and never release it on Steam. I can’t say what is the reason but it’s a nice surprise nonetheless.

          1. Remedy said they had to keep pestering MS for years before they greenlit the Alan Wake port, probably the same situation with this.

          2. Yes, but here the port was already released and while I can see them pestering to release a more stable, better performing (hopefully) DX11 version, at least MS relented in less than a year. That’s something.

          3. Unless of course it was a timed exclusive all along, & they just couldn’t say it was, because Microsoft feared damage to their sales numbers if word of that leaked out……..

          4. Mmmm I can’t see how. I honestly think this is MS recognising that Quantum Break (and its launch state) didn’t attract as many people to their Store as they thought it will but there’s also the chance of Remedy actually thinking about their customers and asking MS to open up the game to include gamers on older OSes. But it’s still a exclusive anyway, playable only on XBox and PC. Semantics, actually.

          5. Could be, maybe they had a “if it doesn’t sell x amount of copies by y date, we get to take it elsewhere” clause, instead.

Either way, a legally binding cop-out is the only way I can ever see Microsoft giving up control of an exclusive. A simple “hey, can we please put it on Steam now?” would have undoubtedly been answered with a giant, resounding, echoing “F*CK YOU.”

    1. I can only hope. I said it before, QB’s flop is the best thing that could have happened to Remedy if it means them parting ways from Microsoft.

    2. Remedy Management must be furious at how badly that UWP exclusivity agreement bit them in the *ss in the end, even though it was their own idiotic choice to sign the damn thing in the first place.

I mean, to go so far as to cut off all support for the UWP version entirely….. LOL.

  2. “Still, it’s kind of sad that there won’t be support for DX11 in the Win10 version.”

It’s not required. DX11 hardware is supported by DX12 via feature levels. And since Win10 comes bundled with DX12 already, having a separate DX11 branch wouldn’t make any sense. Unless of course Remedy made specific optimizations for the DX11 branch during the Steam shift.

    1. And don’t forget that in Dx11 Nvidia and Amd can do more optimisations via drivers than in Dx12.
When we see how shity the game run on Dx12, i think Dx11 can’t be worst.

      1. Remember when Crysis ran like 30-40% worse on DX10 compared to DX9 and that modders managed to make the DX10 features work on DX9 while running at a greater level of performance than DX10? This might be the first official instance of that ocurring.

        1. AFAIK what they did back then was trying to make the DX9 version of the game to have the same graphical quality as DX10 version as close as possible. DX10 feature will not going to work on DX9 because to access the feature you need specifically to run it in DX10.

          1. They did manage to get features like object based motion blur and parallax occlussion mapping in DX9, which were locked to DX10.

          2. Two Worlds 2 had POM in DX10 renderer so there is no conspiracy, it’s probably easier to do with DX10 or the implementation is better.

      2. Hmm, it’s possible perhaps. But I’m not sure how driver optimizations are affected by higher-level APIs versus lower-level ones. Common sense would suggest lower-level access would kinda do away with the need for driver-level optimizations, but I could be wrong.

      3. Only reason for DX11 is broader audience, certainly not better optimization. Vulkan would be smarter choice but then it is microsoft studio, so we could hardly expect that.

        1. don’t under estimate driver team optimization. no one knows the hardware better than the company that making the hardware itself. Remedy themselves openly admit during their GDC presentation that just matching gpu DX11 optimization is very challenging let alone exceed them.

          1. Yep, like I said, they need to dig down deep with DX12, that will take years. It took 2 years to get a DX11 only game, Crytek said themselves a DX11 only renderer made Crysis 3 look great as it did without the DX9 legacy API code. DX12/Vulkan only games will be great, it’s just not relevant yet. You just need to look at console API to know this, I mean Ubisoft was quoted as saying it took around 9 months of optimisation to get the consoles to a near playable level.

          2. I think people blaming Microsoft for QB performance issues is simply ridiculous. Microsoft only financed the game’s development. I know there are issue with UWP but it is Remedy’s lack of experience working with DX12 that is to blame here. I know Gear had issues at launch on UWP but those issues have since been ironed out and other DX12 titles run pretty damn well on the platform (Forza, Killer Instinct, Tomb Raider and the patched Gears…). I think people around these forums dislike (HATRED) for Microsoft is clouding their judgement. And when you can’t be clear in thought your thoughts hold no weight. It’s sad really…

          3. i don’t think you can put all the blame to remedy only. AFAIK this game was supposed to be Xbone exclusive title. they only talk about PC release when the game was nearing it’s launch dates and that actually surprise many people. is it Remedy decision or MS decision to suddenly release the game on PC? it seems to me the PC release of the game are being rushed by MS to lure in more people to use MS store.

  3. Sounds like Remedy want to do good by Steam/Win 7-8 users by backing the DX 11 version, definitely a nice gesture and shows promise.

With all this going on it makes me wonder if Remedy have decided to part ways with MS after this. Logically I’d say it would be better for them to leave and find a more middle ground publisher or handle it themselves.

  4. I’m sure that the ending of support for the UWP version is a great sign of poor sales. Maybe that’s bad news for Microsoft and great news for gamers.

    1. I don’t mind Xbox Achievement and cross-play support but I want that outside of their horrendous platform.

  5. The decent thing for Remedy to do would be to offer the UWP/Win10 Quantum Break customers a QB steam key this September because of the game’s dogshat performance on the UWP DX12 platform , but I bet they won’t.

    1. I am one of those unfortunate customers and I would love to have a free steam key or a at the very least a nice discount on the Steam version.

    2. To be fair, that’s up to Microsoft, not Remedy. They absolutely should though, but I think we all know where M$ will stand on that.

      1. All patches are on both: Steam and Windows Store. Only difference is version of DirectX. On Steam will be DX11 and on Windows Store is DX12

  6. The Windows Store only supports UWP’s, so they can’t release the Win32 version there to my understanding. As others have said, Microsoft should offer UWP/Win10 Quantum Break customers a Steam key, but of course they won’t.

    1. “The Windows Store only supports UWP’s, so they can’t release the Win32 version there to my understanding.”

But it does support DX11. They could easily stick the DX11 version up with a UWP wrapper.

  7. Where are you even seeing it will be better on DX11? It’s the same exact game and there’s no performance benchmarks yet.

    1. “What’s also interesting here is that Remedy has been working on this Win32 version of Quantum Break for a while. Not only that, but Quantum Break may, actually, run better under DX11.”

“We have worked on this release for a while. We got a lot more experience in shipping DX11 titles.”

“Does this mean improved performance and framerate? Please say yes, it’s not like it could be worse 🙁 (game is great, perf isn’t)

“its the same game. For most people it runs fine. DX11 might help you.”

Definitely sounds like there’s a chance a lot of users will experience better performance under DX11. As for being “the exact same game” sure, but it’s running under a different API, which makes a considerable difference, to be fair.

Otherwise, agreed, let’s wait for benchmarks before stating anything definitive either way.

  8. Microsoft is just so stupid that they didn’t know they are digging their own grave. Releasing UWP for Windows10 that they are promoting.. they must be not smart at all

  9. now im MAD they should let buyer of the shity uwp version the chance to get the steam version free of charge!!!!

  10. Did someone do a DX11 vs. DX12 benchmark? I’m very curious, because it would be a great chance to check if DX12 is just a stupid gimmick (at least right now) or something really helpful.

    1. its a gimmick right now. DX12 is off to a worse start than DX11 was but give it time. if not vulkan will trample over it

  11. so in other words they are doing what they should have done from the beggining… Micro$haft needs to just stick to windows and wackbox and they need to get it through their heads their DRM will never be a thing.. all they do is kill gaming… GFWL was a abomination and so i UWP.. just stop. they are only killing their own sales. My opinion is just a grain of rice in a bag but if its not on steam i dont buy it.

    1. “DRM will never be a thing.”

Actually DRM was and will very much be a thing, depending on how it’s served. Steam also implements a form of DRM in case you didn’t know. But it has been well-received by gamers for the most part, in addition to providing a sense of security for publishers.

      1. you misunderstood me. I said WINDOWS DRM will never be a thing. Games for windows live = FAIL Universal Windows Platform = FAIL anytime they try to force their own DRM and services its abysmal

        1. No, you just said DRM. There’s no such thing as “Windows DRM”. What I think you meant was that UWP would never be a thing for gamers.

  12. So if you install the win32 version through on a Win10 machine, it will run auto run in DX12? What if I have Windows 10 but my hardware doesn’t fully support DX12, the game won’t run or will run in a DX11 compatibility mode?

  13. Cue AmigaBot4000 trying to spin this as a positive for Microsoft Spyware 10 & the UWP Store in 3, 2, 1…….

    1. Why? This article was not true at all. Are you seriously believe that they will only release patches to DX11 version on Steam and not release it to DX12 version on Windows Store?

      1. There’s a difference between “not true” & “later clarified.”

“Not true” means DSOG was purposefully lying to us from the start, “later clarified” means like the guy said – he went back later & “clarified” his position to us.

Also, actually, if Remedy Management was pissed off enough, sure, I could see them sending UWP to hell 😀

… Especially if the UWP version didn’t actually sell that well 😮

It’s a rule of thumb – things that don’t sell well don’t get supported very long. Or very well.

  14. If M$ does not give a Steam key to people who bought the Win 10 version then they are committing the customer relations version of a jihadist suicide bombing.

  15. Can’t get 60fps on a Titan X Pascal at 1080p, ultra with upscaling off, “for most people it runs fine”. sure, most people are running NVIDIA hardware and it doesn’t run well on ultra at all, I guess these “most people” are running medium with upscaling on. Even the FuryX can’t get 60fps on ultra according to this older video /watch?v=VbodVlc8htA

    1. Yeah, I’ve seen a GTX 970 get 60fps on medium, that’s all you can hope for but hopefully DX11 should improve things.

    2. That one’s old now, they released Patch 1.7 afterwards which according to DigitalFoundry helped quite a bit – /watch?v=ZMVW9weEUh0 – it’s still not “perfect” but yeah, ignore the Patch 1.6 videos, they’re all outdated.

  16. Thank God. I withold my urge to buy QB since i am using gtx 970 ( i heard performance was poor and constant crashing). Hopefully steam version will work reasonably well becasue i am big remedy fan!!
