I AM SETSUNA – New JRPG From Square Enix With Battle System Inspired By Chrono Trigger

At this year’s Game Developers Conference, the newest studio within the Square Enix, Tokyo RPG Factory, revealed its debut title — I AM SETSUNA. The title is slated for digital release for the west this Summer on the PS4 and Steam.

Led by director Atsushi Hashimoto, Tokyo RPG Factory aims to capture the narrative depth, impactful storytelling and masterful character development inspired by the golden era of Japanese role-playing games and bring them to current hardware and technology.

What’s really interesting here is that the game’s battle system will be inspired by the classic hit CHRONO TRIGGER.

I AM SETSUNA aims to bring back authentic RPG gameplay, beautiful art design and a sorrowful story to the new generation.

  1. When I think Chrono Trigger battle system I think:
    Elemental powers
    Combined specilized attacksDoubleTriple techs
    Lots of cool swords

  2. wasn’t this revealed before? but for PS4 only. now it’s on PC too which is great cause i thought they wouldn’t bother unless it’s a AAA title.

at this point PC announcement for FF15 should be sooner than expected.

  3. Ahhh, I wish these titles weren’t exclusive to Steam. I hope in the near future, more Japanese publishers release titles on GOG.

    1. I love when hipsters come with “I wish this was on GOG”? Why not Origin or better Windows Store? LOL.

  4. I wonder if this has anything to do with canceled Eidos Montreal game. After Human Revolution and before Mankind they were developing some kind of “western” JRPG, which was canceled by Square Enix right before the announcement of Deus Ex Universe.

    1. Chrono Trigger’s story – while definitely entertaining – wasn’t particularly strong compared to contemporaries like FFVI. Its battle system, however, was definitely the most refined version we saw of that particular brand of turn-based gameplay.

And I’m glad it’s coming back here, because we aren’t getting a lot of actual JRPG’s anymore nowadays; mostly just mediocre action games with some light RPG-elements… which I suppose is similar enough to the decline of WRPG’s over here as well.

  5. Awesome, seems like a simultaneous release with PS4 except in Japan. Bring it on Square. Well-known JRPGs need to cement their place inside the PC ecosystem permanently, and this is a great start.
