Steam Sets New Record for Concurrent Users – Over 13 Million Steam Users Online Simultaneously

And it was to be expected. Valve launched its Steam Halloween Sale and today Steam set a new record for concurrent users. As we can see, a couple of hours ago there were 13,480,916 Steam users online, thus showing how successful Valve’s distribution service actually is. Yeap, that’s over 13 million Steam users online simultaneously.

According to Steam’s graphs, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was the most played game today as it peaked at 790,795 gamers. DOTA 2 comes second, in the third place we find Team Fortress 2 and in the fourth place we find Grand Theft Auto V. ARK: Survival Evolved is in the fifth place, followed by The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Sid Meier’s Civilization V, Garry’s Mod, Football Manager 2015, and Skyrim.

  1. Steam is breaking its past records pretty quickly these days. I mean just in 1 month, it broke its older records 3 times.

      1. Those aren’t underwhelming at all. 5 million copies were shipped which means around 4.5 million were sold. The game is on 5 platforms. And close to 800,000 sales are very impressive for a Console game on PC.

      2. Yeah Dreamhack always gives the numbers a boost because a lot of people log on to CS:GO to watch the streams (and get some sweet sweet case drops)

    1. only at peak times and its because of esports other wise 7m-10m online out of 125,000,000 they boast isnt much and its esports then gta 5 and skyrim. that showes you where pc gaming is esports. so how my posts about this gets deleted or doesnt show up i wonder why?… lol

      1. So what conspiracy did you have about your “deleted comments”, I would love to read more of your stupidity.

  2. this is only peak times they have been showing and they sure like to boast them and aslo their 125,000,000 users or what ever. as you can see in the chart there is maybe 7m-10m on. thats pretty low considering the 125,000,000 they boast to have. there is likley that many people on pns or xbox live at a time. but do they boast it no just steam likes to.

also look at whats played the most esports tnen gta5 and skyrim for single player. im not impressed by this at all. it looks like what i have said all along pc is for esports.

  3. Didnt buy yet Ark because people is saying game is not well optimized but there you go, 60000 people playing it at the same time.

    1. I have ARK and yeah the optimization is pretty bad. Only recently am I able to get a stable 60FPS and I have a pretty beefy rig. It is one of my favorite survival games despite being buggy and being poorly optimized, it is just so much fun to play.

  4. How about stop focusing on chasing new records and instead start focusing on developing some awesome games for us Valve?

    1. Because they aren’t supposed to be a$$holes? And if they stopped bother about making games, there would be hellfire on the interwebz

    1. Contrary to the 99% of private companies of the world, Steam didnt ask for a “monopoly” to control the market. LIke Google is one of the companies around the world which likes to give other the chance to participate in the market. Android and SteamOS is a good example of how these companies works.

    2. You’re blaming Steam for the lack of alternatives, when it isn’t Valve’s fault that there aren’t any.

What kind of alternative would you prefer? I can’t imagine anything better than Steam right now (aside from the sheettiest support ever, and some other problems of course). But then again, nothing lasts forever.

We obviously can’t go back to retail. There is GoG, but aside from the support for the old titles, there isn’t much special about it. There are DRM free titles on Steam that doesn’t require it for playing. Uplay, Origin… they’re years behind Steam right now.

      1. You misunderstood, I’m not blaming Steam I’m blaming “us”.

How many times you see someone asking for a GOG/DRM free release?
Everytime I see “no Steam, no buy” or “I like to have my games in one place”.
There’s no demand for a alternative (at least on a significant level) but I don’t think that’s because Steam is perfect, it is because it is convenient.
That isn’t to say that that convenience isn’t good (it is great and I’m thankful) but I just want to see a greater movement demanding more options to acquire games on PC.

Quite infeasible for AAA devs at this point since not launching your game on Steam is suicide. But at least they could provide more options and maybe we could start from there.

I don’t like PC gaming being “exclusive” (effectively) to one distribution platform. :/

        1. Steam is not perfect, far from it, but it’s better than anything else on the market currently. People like having better things, and I can’t blame them for it. And it’s really better having all of your games in one place, rather than installing 10 different store clients.

But it’s not just about that, it’s also better for developers. They have all their PC audience in one place, and they don’t need to worry about, again, 10 different store clients where they need to patch their game.

If some kind of better alternative will present itself, people will eventually abandon Steam and jump on it, so it will become the new exclusive distribution platform, and the cycle will continue.

I don’t know, I don’t like monopoly too, but I just really don’t see any options right now.

          1. Yeah, but Steam had a long time to develop itself but the way I see nowadays, nobody wants to wait or won’t even bother if another thing comes along. Valve/Steam basically became a “first party” on PC.
And I don’t think we need a client for every dev/publisher, just a DRM-free/Standalone installer would be enough of a option, which also would help devs, because they wouldn’t need to worry about their games being buried under the flood of games hitting steam everyday.
Want all the client functionalities, MP, chat, friends, etc? Buy on Steam, otherwise here’s another options for those who don’t care for that stuff. I don’t know the economics of this, but I think it wouldn’t hurt.

          2. Valve didn’t had resources they have right now, that’s why it took so long to develop it. Origin and Uplay, on the other hand, have the largest publishers in the world behind them, and still, they cannot offer anything close to Steam. Publishers didn’t even tried. All they wanted is their own private DRM to sold their games, nothing more. They don’t care about users, they don’t care about community, and for this reason they don’t want to work in that direction (unlike GOG).

Stand alone installers would be great (something like an online retail copies, similar to GOG), but here is the problem #1: big publishers will never leave the idea of some kind of magic DRM that will save their sales, because the ordinary company manager is so far away from the gaming world he believes that the only reason a game didn’t sell well is because it was pirated. Not because it was sheetty, or buggy, not because of a bloated budget, not because there is simply no demand for that kind of genre. No, it’s all pirates. Remember what CEO of Ubisoft said?

Indie games, on the other hand, more loyal to the audience and most of them have GOG versions anyway.

The problem #2 is that indie developers do not have funds to promote their games. Steam does that instead. AAA games will fine without Steam, indie scene, on the other hand, will die fast. I believe that a little gem always has a chance to dig out itself from the pile of trash that floods Steam every day, with the help of the community. Without a platform, there is no community, and no place to thrive.
For example, ever heard of the game White Chamber? One of the best indie point & click horror adventures with the great plot and several endings. It’s available for free on their site since 2005, but it’s not widely known exactly for that reason. It wasn’t released anywhere (but it’s going to be remastered).

          3. All right (apologizes if my constant replies annoys you Nines, please feel free to tell me/ignore if that may be the case).

I can agree with your first point to some extent, there’s one thing that the others don’t provide in their respective storefronts: Quality control/curation. Debatable since we can argue about the quality PC ports (especially Ubisoft) but still, back to that after the break :p.

Completely agree with the second point about DRM (and if I may recommend a nice read about it “So who is DRM for anyway?” by Shamus Young).

Now, the last point, you said that Steam helps indies to promote their games and ehhh, I don’t fully agree with that. See, like you said earlier in this conversation, Steam provides a place where all the PC audience can be united and that certainly help BUT the caveat is that this leaves Valve/Steam free to sit on their arses while the community is supposed to do the hard work.

Aaaand we see how things can turn out isn’t it? Greenlight and Early Access, good ideas ruined by the complete lack of control and flooding Steam with absolute garbage, it’s a f’ing joke and not a funny one.

There’s just way too much c?r?@?p? games and a “small number” of people interested in them (if possible, read the “Your target audience doesn’t exist” article by Sergey Galyonkin on MediumDOTcom) which leaves the curation/quality control in the hands of people that aren’t that relevant for Valve to make they really do something in that regard. Is great for indies since their audience is there already, but bad because everyone and their mothers who claims to be a dev is there also.

Also not enough of a number for the “big guys” to bother either.

Oh my, we are trapped forever to Steam isn’t it?

*Thanks for the game recommendation by the way, I’m trying to get into the point&click lately and this comes at the right time. 🙂

          4. My first point wasn’t about storefront, quality control or curation. It’s about creating a proper digital environment for a community. Steam has separated hubs for every game, screenshots, streaming, guides, workshop, market, etc, etc. Origin and Uplay don’t have any of it, and not because they can’t do it or they need more time to make it, they just aren’t interested in it (whatever the reasons). And because of this, they can’t compete with Steam.

Greenlight was suppose to be replaced with something, and refunds are probably going to improve the situation with Early Access, but as you said, the problem is in *us*. For the whole time since all this crowdfunding boom began I personally kickstarted 0 projects, and have only 3 EA games I think. 2 of them came from bundles, and 1 was gifted to me. I’m not saying everyone should be like me, but people should be careful about giving funds to someone they don’t even know personally.

On a side note, Valve introduced Discovery Queue that suppose to help users discover games similar to what they usually play. Not Interested button on every game page also affect this.

No, we aren’t trapped, we have GOG as an alternative (you also can go full pirate if you want to). Besides, everything must come to an end. Steam will perish too someday.

If you want to get into point & click, there are a lot of great games on Steam and GOG, and some of them were remastered (like Grim Fandango or Monkey Island. Broken Sword remaster is pretty lazy though).

          5. I agree with Steam basically having no competitors, I just mentioned the quality control because that’s the thing that it lacks most. The community stuff is great I agree, but the other storefronts have a lot more focus on what’s being sold. An example would be outright broken games that boggles my mind still being sold, and it is up for a community to take care of that? The refund are great, but as I’ve said, it is up to the people to keep an eye on this? It’s a basic consumer right that took then a decade to implement, and nowadays I see that being used as an excuse for the lack of quality that Steam needs (off course the devs/pubs are the ones to be blamed aswell, but still).

I also never funded any KS or bought something on Origin/Uplay. All freebies and gifts (on Origin that is, Uplay can rot in hell) and I don’t see that changing soon, but then again, not because of any particular “gripe” with the service/storefronts it has to do more with the business of the companies as a whole.

The Discoveries Queue and the Steam Curators is kinda helps I agree, but I still think it needs a lot more filtering options.

Yes we have GOG (and in fact, it was them that made me develop a little bit of hope for the future which resulted in me abandoning piracy for good), but it needs a lot more coming from both the users and the mega-publishers. And as we discussed DRM, it’s waaaay to bloody hard for it to change any soon. Add to that the recent marketing towards the “Steam ecosystem” (Machines/Link/Controller/OS) and it makes my head dizzy just thinking about what it could result for PC in the future.

Granted I’m the absolute minority that keeps complaining about it, but it is just because my experiences with the service you know? Right after I left piracy and went to make my first purchase on Steam, I took time to read the EULA and that made me think so much that I can’t help to talk about it when having the chance.

On the Point&Click topic, I’m trying to experience the “minor” ones before I jump into the classics. 🙂

          6. I don’t think Valve can solve the quality problem. It’s not just on Steam, it’s everywhere. You can buy a broken thing in any store, even a good one. Maybe you should write an email to Gaben, I heard he actually read them.

When I said “3 EA games” I meant Early Access. Prison Architect and Nekro came from bundles, and Invisible Inc was gifted to me.

Not sure what’s wrong with Steam ecosystem. Machines can be used with any OS you want, as well as controller. The popularity of the Steam OS is depends on the success of the Vulkan API though. But even if everything will go as Valve want it to go, it still will be better than using Microsoft’s products for PC gaming, because they don’t give a sheet about it.

But the most important thing is openness of everything. Machines are open and customizable, SteamOS will have a source code, Vulkan API is free from major companies like Microsoft, and will work on pretty much any platform.

          7. Yes it is a problem plaguing everywhere but Steam wins by far, because every excuse for a game has a place in the store it seems. There’s no criteria of what is acceptable or not, there’s asset flipping, there’s flash games, there’s games that don’t work at all, and just now we got refunds, and it alone is supposed to do the work. GOG does it, and even when you find trouble, rest assured that at least someone checked and worked in the game to be put in the store. On Steam, you and the community are the ones supposed to do the work.

Lol, I’m having an idea, I’m thinking in sending this conversation to Gabe. :p

Oh, my mistake about the EA. But then again, I have no early access in my account. As much as I want some games, I can’t get behind the idea no matter why. I guess the whole abuse of the system made me jaded.

Like my ?p?a?r?a?n?o?i?a? problem with the Steam ecosystem comes in the same way that it is with consoles. I’m aware that is a bit exaggerated because of the nature of the PC being an open platform, but when I see that Steam basically have PC gaming “in their pockets”, I can’t help to think what a Steam ecosystem can do if it succeeds.

          8. Maybe you should send an email. Maybe we all should. Darksiders 2 DE a new release doesn’t even work. Not sure what kind of release is this when it crashes on choosing “Load game”. They didn’t even tested it? Black Ops III is broken too apparently.

And here I thought I was the Mr. Paranoia. In all fairness, Steam did a lot of good for PC gaming. It’s the only reason we have GTA V, Dark Souls and many other releases on PC today.

I’d say we have bigger threats right now. Windows 10 is the death sentence to the last piece of privacy we had. I seriously hope SteamOS will succeed so gamers will be free from Microsoft. We need a stable gaming platform that will be updated in years, not a new OS every 2 years with a new interface and a new API that doesn’t even has any major differences with a previous one, but requires a new GPU. F*ck that.

          9. I know and ultimately I feel “defeated” (lol) and have to agree, I came to realize that now I have a bigger game library than the one I’ve had when I was “sailing” and can’t wait to ditch Windows for good too.

Can’t wait to see more support coming from “us” aswell, the more people realizing/supporting the “openness” of the PC gaming platform the better. Can’t hurt to nag the major publishers too (in a educated and fashionable manner that is hehe).

Great discussion here Nines thanks! 😉

        2. I feel you. That is why I love the Humble Bundle because they offer DRM-FREE titles but still give you the steam keys that way you have a launcher free way to download your games, but you can still use steam for things like multiplayer (and others).

A monopoly is not good for the consumer on any front, be it distribution platform or operating system.

        1. KILL THE HERETIC! THROW HIM INTO THE FLAMES!

          ??? ????? ?? ??? ???? ?????, ?? ? ???, ?????? ~???????~ ???? ?????? ???

  5. that moment when you don’t play any of the games on that list. From the list I only own Terraria and Witcher 3

  6. format better your comments. Use a space after a full stop or a period, otherwise the comment appears to have a link (thus it needs to be manually approved)

      1. just playing devils advocate here and telling the side no one wants to hear.just like steam sayd 34% of pc gamers out of 125,000,000 only use 1080p.well 7m-10m out of 125,000,000 is like 3% or something like that on at one time its not much.and its mostley esports being played.

          1. Are you seriously not able to see the stupidity on your comments? You sure are delusional.

    1. im just showing real avrages here.just saying they want to boast the big numbers and get a woohooo and not show all the sides 3%-4% on out of 125m user base isnt alot.

          1. Coming from you, that is hilarious. You really can’t see why the things you write are pure nonsense, which is pretty sad if you ask me.

          2. you still havent tried to argue or prove me wrong in any way. you are just mouthing off hence troll. lol

  7. I like to answer your comment, but I cant even understand it. LOL. What is clear is that you are kinda butthurt, guess you havent paid your PSN subscription this month. 😛
By the way, never see Steam saying a word about their online users, its the media who likes to do it, like that media which give awards to overrated console games ;).

    1. get an education then you mite be able to understand it. it isnt that hard. im saying they like to boast their numbers but dont show the avrages. 7m-10m on

out of 125,000,000 isnt a lot thats like 3% of it users. they like to boast big numbers but dont show its avrages. im not butthurt as you say i just play devils
advocate when ther are to many woohoo fanboys and its not just pc.

  8. Lol WTF are you talking about. Sony and M$ never announced that their concurrent numbers exceeded 4 million. So, even if we take your comment seriously, still 10 million concurrent users are more than impressive.

    1. xbox did 39 million live accounts and sony hasnt.
“ven if we take your comment seriously, still 10 million concurrent users are more than impressive”you say not out of 125m users steam has that like 3% of its user base on its not a lot if you look at it like that.

        1. i have a pc. im in that 24% of pc usere that can do 1080p.. lol. 66% of pc gamers cant.. all joking aside i put out fact i guess you are the person that thinks 3 cents out of $1.00 if a lot same deal here 7m-10m out of 125m isnt alot. on at one time. people cant handle the truth so here all all the trolls.

  9. You have to be grateful that John or Disqus doesnt apply an low IQ filter. All your comments should be banner for the sake of, first, the english language, two, common sense.

  10. Imagine what will happen next week with the release of Steam Link and Machines! It will break the 20 millions concurrent users record

    1. steam machines are not pc’s and cant be up graded as much… lol they still use same specs ans pc for games. as you know its wont last long maybe a year or 2. either get a console or build a pc do get this crap… lol

  11. The reason that this month the most played games on steam are older games like GTA 5 and Skyrim is because there wasnt any new big releases on October.. But on November we have Sonic Lost World Call of Duty Assasin Creed and Fallout 4. So at the end of the month the steam stats will be different due to those big releases and due to the release of Steam machines and Link.

    1. its still all esports if you look i hate esports have never played them or ever will. im sure fallout 4 will be top for a while then fall off like most sp games do. but the meta of pc gaming is right in front of you esports.

  12. i know a lot of people care about numbers but i dont. i mean even if i was the only one on steam why would i care? my experience (in SP games at least) remains the same. its not an MMO after all

    1. they care only about numbers they WANT to hear. all im says is 7m-10m out of 125m on average is online isnt much and its mostley esports being played. other numbers that steam says 34% of pc gamers run 1080p. which means that 66% dont use 1080p. those are numbers pc doesnt want to hear. as i said its numbers you WANT to hear.

  13. and yet gabe continue neglecting the PC crowd and excitingly trying to make it’s platform to be openly as possible to the “living room”. they don’t bother about bad and subpar ports on steam (bad performance and broken games on it’s platform while consoles running silky smooth without issues as well as allowing “downgrading” ports of games. can you believe PS4 graphics effects > PC version on Dead or Alive 5 LR, Dynasty Warriors 8, Finaly Fantasy 13, etc. as the list goes on?).

what valve interested in are getting free money for all the games selling it on steam and give 0 f*cks about it’s own userbase. i’m happy PS4 is slowly killing PC gaming.

    1. Valve have put in place the mechanisms required to combat junk products on Steam; user ratings, refunds, just look at Batman AK. Pretty much the same way other online retailers allow their customers to review products and get their money back if they are not satisfied. The community has the ability to ensure developers and/or publishers don’t go with impunity when they try to sell a turd.

And the suggestions that console games run “silky smooth” and that “PS4 is slowly killing PC gaming”, well… I don’t think anything has to be added to such stupid statements, other than to underline them.

    2. get ready for the trolls man they are coming.and when they do say this steam says on 34% of pc gamers use 1080p and that means that 66% of pc gamers dont use it..lol pisses em off every time.

also say more people play at 1080p on the ps4 % wise then pc…lol it works for me.

      1. The problem with the survey is not everyone gets it, and it is a misrepresentation of the actual numbers. I run Linux on my desktop and have for some time now, but I have never gotten the survey on that platform, but I have gotten it on my laptop, that up until recently ran Windows and my laptop is 1366 x 768. You’ll notice that is a common resolution because lots of people run small indie games on laptops while also having stronger desktops.

          1. No, I think you misunderstood me. I do 99% of my gaming on my desktop that I run games at 2560 x 1440, but I haven never gotten the survey on my desktop, but my laptop runs at 1366 x 768 and I have gotten the survey on that. SO it is an inaccurate representation of what I actually run on.

Maybe this you’ll understand. Lets say a survey is sent out to XB1 and PS4 gamers but 90 PS4 gamers get the survey and 10 XB1 gamers get it. Does that mean that 90% of console gamers play PS4? No. The survey inaccurately represents the market.

I think your confusion comes from not understanding how the Steam surveys are administered. It isn’t an email and you put in what resolution you run on. It automatically detects these settings basd on what device the survey is answered on. So if I answer on my laptop it says I play at 1366 x 768 when I really play at 2560 x 1440.

    3. Steam does not represent 100% of the PC market, and it is true PC is often treated as a second class citizen, but only when it comes to the games that were ported over from consoles; Games like Dead Rising and Batman Arkham Knight. The same runs true for several PC titles that get ported over to consoles, like Team Fortress 2, (most RTS titles), Fallout, Crysis and Deus Ex. All of these titles are either lacking in stability or features in comparison to their PC counterparts.

If you prefer the PS4 that is cool man, I have lots of friends who are console gamers and are happy with that, but saying that the PS4 is killing the PC, well that just straight up not true. PC gaming is the bigger than it has been in a while and continues to grow.

    1. We know re**rd, I was asking what was your conspiracy before the mod wrote the answer. You are the one that thought they got deleted.

  14. What is the point of explaining stuff to a mentally challenged person, a lot of people already wasted their time explaining stuff to you on this thread, but you have your head way up your ahole and won’t listen.

  15. By posts do you mean your comment? If so we don’t censor here at DSOG. We fully support constructive discussion, only when it spins out of control into a giant flame war do we step in and remove comments. So feel free to discuss just keep it civil.

  16. Let’s try to keep the name calling to a minimum. Previously nobody’s comments had been deleted but it is getting a bit out of hand. Just try to keep it civil guys.

  17. SteamOS is available for download so that anyone can build their own Steam Machine. There are several pre-built steam machines that are in a bit of a tight case but they still use the same motherboards and components as other PCs and can be migrated to a different case to add more room for upgrades (excluding a few models). They are still just Linux PCs and feature a Full Linux Distro.

    1. we are talking about barley up gradeable steam machines here. no an os. the steam machine will still use pc requirements. consoles dont need up grades pc does. common sense. this thing will fail.

      1. I’m not just talking about the OS. The hardware in a Steam Machine is the same hardware that is in regular desktop PCs (save for a few steam machines) you could take everything out of your steam machine and put it in another case if you wanted. The only thing that limits upgradability on several Steam machines is the size of the case, which can be changed.

PLUS you don’t HAVE to upgrade your PC, if you want to run every game at max settings as the years go by, sure, but you can just turn down the settings.

  18. Do you also consider all fighting games eSports just because people play them competitively? You’d be surprised at the number of games that people play as eSports. Halo used to be really big.

    1. umm street fighter 4 has world champion ships aired on twitch with prize money.i guess that doesnt make it an esport right?just because its a fighter.and any game where people compete for MONEY is an esport.

      1. Oh I’m not saying that fighters can’t be qualified as esports. Fighters can definitely be qualified as an esport. I myself used to play Street Fighter in various tournaments. I’m just saying by saying that you hate esports you are pretty much saying you hate a lot of big titles.

        Counter Strike
        Dota 2
        Halo
        Gears of War
        Starcraft
        Rocket League
        Call of Duty
        Battlefield
        Dead of Alive
        Most Sports Games
        Forza
        Killer Instinct
        Mortal Kombat
        World of Tanks
        Street Fighter
        Mario Kart
        Super Smash Bros
        Pokemon
        Hearthstone
        League of Legends
        Smite
        Doom
        Unreal Tournament
