In an interview with METRO’s GameCentral, the executive producer of DOOM, Marty Stratton, revealed some new information about id Software’s upcoming shooter. According to Marty, this new DOOM game won’t take itself as seriously as Doom 3. And while some horror elements are present, the game won’t follow Doom 3’s route.
As Marty told GameCentral:
“We use this phrase all the time: ‘ Don’t take ourselves too seriously!’ I worked on Doom 3, I love Doom 3, but it took itself pretty seriously. Doom I and Doom II are a bit more outlandish, they’re very comic book, they’re very juvenile almost in their approach. That’s definitely our inspiration for how we’ve gone with this one.”
Regarding the game’s locations, Marty said that they will be more varied than those found in Doom 3. And while the first E3 demo level was similar to the environments of Doom 3 in both terms of atmosphere, horror and visuals, the game will also throw hordes of enemies at the player.
“We’re always struggling against the number of AI we have on-screen, and that kind of thing, but I think fans will definitely get those moments of, Wow! I just ploughed my way through a lot of enemies!” said Marty and continued:
“Yeah, I think visually, because that was a pretty heavily industrial area, it kind of felt that way. There’s a visual similarity to Doom 3 there. At that point in the game you are in a UAC facility, which basically all of Doom 3 took place on. But the game is very varied in its locations, and very much unlike Doom 3 that very first area – you put on your helmet, you go through that door, we chose a path where you jump over and get on that landing and go across…
Like you said, you see some of the horror elements because the whole area has been just decimated by demons. So you’re definitely going to get those moments of gore and blood. But you can go anywhere in that area, you could jump down onto those catwalks, you could go up… so it is very Doom I/Doom II-esque in terms of that non-linearity within areas. Trying to figure out, ‘How do I get to that next area?’ Well, there’s a bunch of different places I can go.”

I hope will see this game aspect again ^^
Level Design in Doom was amazing, if the new Doom don’t have Level Design similiar to this, it’s going to be really disappointing.
I also want to see secret levels like in the original. Wolfenstein had some hidden doors at some places (not too much though) and it is quite possible to see that again here.
This is Doom after all.
Because they don’t have Romero. 🙂
Actually American McGee was the primary level designer in the first two DOOM games. John Romero was mainly in charge of making sure everything looked and felt right.
It won’t. Don’t hold your breath.
I miss playing with a map and explore
And for those that said “this is no Doom”…yup you only played the 3rd one.
Doom wasn’t a scary game (I played the original Doom back in the day and Doom 2 in 1994 when I was 9 years old), it was an action packed game with tons of enemies coming from everywhere and maze like levels in where you had to find coloured keys to open some doors and then go and kill more enemies through the whole level till the end and so on.
Those comparing this Doom with the 3rd one which was more focused in the story and with a dark ambience to it which the previous never had at all…I don’t know…I may think that some of you are not old enough to really know what Doom was all about back in the day.
So to me the new Doom is more like Doom was back in the day…going forward killing enemies like crazy. Maybe it has some things that I don’t like (like the slow motion moments at the time of changing the gun which doesn’t suit the game’s pace), but all in all it looked like Doom to me.
DOOM was all about atmosphere, and while it may not be what today is classified as “horror,” it definitely created a sense of dread, and it certainly wasn’t “juvenile.” (That’s concerning, coming from the person in charge.)
I am concerned about some of DOOM IV’s creature design made public so far; in the originals, the graphics allowed the imagination to fill in the details; some of the monsters made public so far look too cartoonish (or me-too-ish, as in something between a Balrog and a Diablo/WarCraft trailer end-beast).
DOOM’s Cyberdemon never seemed funny to me.
Someone doesn’t remember the manuals for the first two DOOM games, does he? Every description in there was very tongue-in-cheek and juvenile in the most pure sense of the word. Hell, even the accompanying comic book depicted this crude über-violent world. While it DID have the dark, disturbing atmosphere, id did NOT take this game very seriously (when your most powerful weapon is an acronym for “Big F***in’ Gun” and enemy descriptions like this [ http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php?topic=741.0 ], you’re not taking yourself very seriously).
Well back in the day I also played Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem and Quake (which to me was a little bit more dark compared to Doom)…plus don’t forget that games are also re-playable, so I re-played those games a lot of times after the first time.
Not sure where the sense of “horror” was in Doom back in the day (and trust me I am a horror game fan now, and Doom is not in that category to me), for me it was just shooting monsters in corridors and search for the keys, press the space bar all the time to find the hidden doors and such.
And to the other guy, I probably never ever read the manual…I never ever read a manual to any game if I think about it in 25 years playing games. (since I was 5 year old on my Atari and Spectrum)
Some people have a weird vision about what is a game and what is not. This is like when you watch a movie…some people get scared of things ans such but in my case I see things as they are, if a game is a game, a movie is a movie.
I am not saying that I don’t get scared of things or care about stories, characters, plots and being impressed by the things that “happen” in them…But seriously, this is like judging GTA games in where some people “blame” the game for being too “realistic” and then they think that people go outside and start to kill everyone in a rampage because of the game.
Are you taking Doom too seriously perhaps? Taking Doom or any game too seriously is not the right thing to do in my opinion, as they are just games after all.
(maybe I went places here but hope you get the point)
Whether history or fiction and regardless of media (books, poetry, film, games, art, etc.), I like to immerse myself in a story. When DOOM premiered, it’s graphics were at a level of realism that was unique, and — combined with the sound effects, music, creature and level design, and movement — my imagination went to town. (All I needed was the one-sentence plot to ignite it all.)
If I were to view a game as just a bunch of moving pixels and sound effects, then it wouldn’t any fun. (That happens to me with movies all the time; if a film isn’t great, I end up analyzing it instead of enjoying it.)
I do believe that a game that rewards evil is inappropriate for children. Most kids are really receptive to media’s influence.
Enjoy DOOM! (I hope I will.)
Who says that though, citing those reasons?
I haven’t seen that. Seems to me you’re just dismantling an imaginary strawman argument.
When’s the last time you played Doom, Doom II, or modded versions of them? If your last memory is from 1994 you might wanna refresh it a bit. This new Doom is much better than 3, of course, but there’s still so much wrong with it. It’s very consolized and doesn’t look promising to me at all. The only glimmer of hope is moddablility beyond the confines of their cute little map creator tool.
Yeah, killing a dozen on-screen Enemies really compares to the epic Hordes that were constantly coming at you in D1-2. The Weapon Wheels, brown graphic filters etc. REALLY, REALLY remind me of good old D1-2, rather than D3.
The Quake 4 Strogg ripoffs really remind me of that too.
For that matter, so too does the delightful Weapon Wheel.
This is TOTALLY a true DOOM Game………
NOT.
If you really think this is going to be “maze-like levels in which you had to find hidden keys to open some doors, only to go kill more Hordes of enemies”, you’re sorely mistaken. This is going to be linear, generic, & idiots will applaud it as “a true DOOM Game” because they don’t know any better.
Looking forward to this 🙂
How can it has more varied eviroment when it will still take place in UAC facility lke doom 3? They must add some misiions that will take place on Earth for more variety. DOOM1 did this where episode 4 took place on earth while the 3 previous one were on Mars UAC facility. They can do something similar to this on the new DOOM game. However i am sure it will be the best fps and best pc fps os 2016. And i am going for full pc upgrade to run it at 4k DSR max settings 60 fps!!!
I would not be surprised if earth levels make an appearance. After all the original version of Doom 4, before they started over, was set on earth.
But they already said that this new doom game will take place only on Mars and Hell like Doom 3. Maybe the next doom game after this will take place on earth.
It’s already taking itself seriously with that gritty color palette
It’s not really that gritty it’s just very… yellow. But yeah, screw color filters.
no
I’ll believe when I play it!
“yes yes. we’ve got more exciting stuff than that showed in the e3…
what? why we didn’t just showed it? because potato.”
Can’t wait… So far, I’m quite happy with the way game looks and plays but of course it’s no Shadow Warrior 2, which is Wangtastic.
Can’t wait for this game!
What they have shown off so far at E3 looks great. It already looks tonnes better than Doom 3 and that is all I asked for to be honest. Looking forward to playing it early next year!
I will be definitely getting this day one (no pre-order though). So few FPS come out each year besides COD and BF, and the focus on SP aswell as MP is right up my alley.
DOOM had manuals?
Every game had manuals back then. And games often laughed at you for not RTFM (reading the f**kin’ manual.)
That was a rhetorical question.
DOOM’s manual was as essential to its enjoyment as its extensive, complex, and heart-wrenching plot.
