Cloud Imperium: Star Citizen Unlikely To Support DX10 GPUs Or Systems With Less Than 8GB RAM

Star Citizen is perhaps one of the most visually impressive PC-only titles that are coming to our platform and as you may already know, it’s powered by Crytek’s engine. However, the official PC requirements for its Arena Commanded module seemed quite high. Which made us wonder whether the team would lower them in the near future. Apparently, that’s not going to happen.

As Sean Tracy, Engine Technical Director at Cloud Imperium Games, told us, while the overall performance will be optimized much further than the current version of Arena Commander, Cloud Imperium does not expect to lower the system requirements any time soon.

When we asked Sean whether the final game would run on systems with less than 8GB of RAM, Sean said:

“Likely not. We are creating this game with the PC gamer in mind. Of course performance will be optimized much further than our current version of Arena Commander but I wouldn’t expect that we would drop the system requirements any time soon. Additionally on the Direct X 10 front, as almost every engine/rendering we’d like to put in relies heavily on DX11 and even DX12 or Mantle I can’t see DX10 cards even existing much longer. It’s difficult to say, but I don’t expect that the majority of gamers would even have DX10 cards anymore and so for us to continue support it wouldn’t make sense.”

Our full interview with Sean will go live this weekend, so stay tuned for more!

  1. Although I believe there are plenty of DX10 cards on PCs out there, I do not believe that those who have it expect to play anything released lately.
With that said, since it is a crowd funded project, to include more systems will only help them (and others projects) in the long run.

    1. Stupid crashing Disqus.

Anyone who has 2 brain cells to rub together after watching all the released videos should know not to expect inferior outdated hardware and software to run this game.
If you don’t, you’re missing 1 braincell or are delusional. That’s the gist of it.

  2. This is what PC gaming should be about, pushing the envelope, and the limitations of the way we experience interactive digital art.

    1. Hell yeah, F*CK all consoles 😀
Allright Nintendo can be around as Pc and Nintendo is what it should all be about 😉

        1. You do that mate and I was just browsing here, take a look at the best WiiU games 🙂

          http://www.usgamer.net/articles/what-are-the-best-wii-u-games

I myself have an WiiU but have just played some of em as ZombieU/ Zelda Wind Waker and Super Mario 3D World and have to say that all of them is totaly frikking AWESOME, be sure to get them 😀

Cant wait to nextyear, that upcoming new Zelda game will be crazy good I belive!

    2. A difficult thing to do. Notice how much hate MS get’s when DX12 won’t work on Windows 7, which is from 2009.

      1. For a game with so much hype? No, sadly not.

If something small will be at least not as good as they promised, it will be a huge crack in a dam. It’s all about trust here.

        1. Or you can adjust your expectations for yourself. Hype is a thing, but eat that hype is an other thing. You can eat 20 stakes, but if you vomit after that, it’s not the restaurant’s fault.

You can play the game to expect everything from it, or you can expect a fair amount of promises to be true. Eating up all that tasty hype will cause vomiting i bet.

          1. Last time I’ve checked (so pardon me if I’m wrong) the game raised $55 f’ing million obamas. There’s one, out of stock mind you, “completionist pack” for $15,000. Also I’ve read that there’s already a “grey market” of people selling ships for a lot of money.

So yeah this idea of a simple “cool game” doesn’t work for me.

          2. This game reminds me of some kind of expensive sport car.

They said that all ships will be available through the game, but judging from their cost, you will probably need to grind for weeks and months to get them.

          3. And why shouldn’t you? Getting the best thing straight away is stupid. Eve Online it can take months to get a battleship, never mind fly it properly with the right skills.

          4. Wasn’t WoW that “legalized” this? I remember reading something about when they introduced the riding things (I don’t know, never played WoW)

          5. I already adjusted my expectations, since I don’t believe in Chris Roberts & Co, but many people out there will expect a PC messiah.

Someone already spent hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on this game, just because they trust him, and trust Is a fragile thing.

  3. I really hope that Star Citizen will be like modern first Crysis – game designed ahead of it’s time that really pushes what is PC capable of. That’s the reason why I’m ok with required very high spec PC – it shoud be this way.

    1. So what of all the PC exclusives that don’t come to consoles and yet are complete garbage? A useless dev IS A USELESS DEV.
I don’t care what this game is, one game is not worth a €4000 PC.

      1. Which exclusives? Just curious.

Most of what I own and read about has always been about console games being completely unoptimized when brought to PC. And some PC games have eventually been ported to console but that was intended from the beginning, and the game is optimized versus the former.

As to buying a 4k PC. If you can, do it. If you can’t there are plenty of options to get something that can run it decently and with most effects on. But that’s your choice in the end of how much or how far you are willing to go.

My point is still about not utilizing what’s available and being held back.
        That’s all.

      2. Thats right, the garbage PC games only ever seem to be garbage until they are announced for the toy platforms. Like Minecraft, Planetside 2, DIablo 3, COD, Battlefield, Dont Starve etc, etc…

In fact pretty much every popular game on consoles right now is a sequel to a PC game or derived from a PC franchise, yet console gamers are lapping it up. Its only on a Nintendo console that you get a console experience that isnt trying too hard and failing to be a PC.

Sony and M$ strategy for the last 10 years has been to casualise and bastardise PC franchises for the lower standards of console gamers. The garbage exclusive PC games we play now are the console games of the future.

  4. Considering just how massive the open areas will be once they switch over to 64bit with the 8K and beyond textures, also no ‘baked down’ graphics therefore the statement above was to be expected.

This will be the new PC gaming benchmark for years to come.

  5. Wonderful news, this is what can be done when no crappy piss poor weak console will keep it back!

Pc Gaming at it’s finest, so keep on pushing that envelope and this will show every peasant console owner what a real game is all about 😉

    1. remember these are the minimum requirements, if you want to play full game on ultra settings and 8k textures and 60+ FPS and also in QHD ( it’ll be more popular by then not sure about 4k), it think you need at least 16 gigs or more ram!!

  6. “Star Citizen is perhaps one of the most visually impressive PC-only titles that are coming to our platform…” Can somebody please share some visually impressive screenshots or videos? So far it looks quite average to me. Thanks

    1. I like it when a person says “So far it looks quite average to me” yet never has anything else to prove that something looks better.

If the videos they released look average to you, I want to know what you are playing and on what system that looks so much more not average than Star Citizen, please direct me to this holy grail of games and systems you seem to have. I got money to burn. Show me dude.

Oh you can’t? Odd how that is.

  7. As a backer what I find technically interesting is the push to move Crysis into 64bit. The CIG guys are really going at it with fidelity. You simply won’t need a high-end GPU and gobs of memory, you’ll need a CPU beyond what’s in the current consoles.

Load up the current asteroid hangar on a high-end system and walk around one of the ships. You won’t see anything quite like this anywhere else, including current sci-fi movies.

  8. If this is minimum system requirement, then the game will be flop. When Crysis released two 8800gtx couldn’t max it, but most of them were able to play on hd 3200 with medium settings and 1gb Ram on 720p

    1. Well, 8GB ram, a decent quad core and a DX11 card it’s the norm these days. Let’s not take a “64bit” argument again, shall we? 🙂
